7 String Epi Les Paul (now w/pics)

I recently traded a guy my 1981 Acoustic Corp G60 2X12 combo, that's a really awesome SS amp that never use anymore, for a 2000 7 string Epiphone Les Paul. I've always want a 7 string or a baritone guitar so this was a good opportunity to do so. Now I don't want to sound high on my horse, but I've been playing guitar almost 18 years. When I first started playing I played a few Squire Strats and low end Jacksons, but soon found myself wanting to play a the higher end stuff. So moved on. I got a 79' Strat a couple Gibson Explorers and V's, an ESP Custom Explorer. I never waste my time looking at the Squires, Epiphiones or low end anything anymore. I reconize that the right guitar is whatever and one should be able to get good tone from even the crappiest gear. What's my point? I'm am really impressed with this Epiphone. The guy put locking tuners on it and EMG 707's in it and that's sold me on it, since I like EMG's. However the guitar itself play great and looks great. The guy at the guitar shop that did the setup on it commented on the quaility of it and I agree. He had an Epiphone SG Elite that messed around on and I was blown away by the quality of that one too. I've never been an Ibanez fan, but I was impressed the new Destroyer that I picked at a guitar store in Gainesville the other day. I guess I need to not be so quick to dismiss something because of name or price.

LOL!!! Alright I'll throw pics up soon. I saw another on ebay last week. It was classic flameburst, mine is black flameburst.
Here is the pics that you wanted. Sorry they are so dark, the finish is alot better than pics show. Itwas raining out so I took the pic in my bathroom.
WOW! Noice! I didn't even know they made a 7 string. I like the trans-black finish, very cool! Are those factory EMG's?? Gonna go real nice with the new HD100, aye? Congrats on the new axe bro... ![]()

Thanks man, I'm very pleased with it. The guy I got the guitar off of put the EMG's in it rigged for 18volts. Apparently the EMG's were too big for the pickup cavity so he routed them out alittle to make room for them. There no pickup rings that fit them, so I have to figure something out to make it look better. He also put locking tuners on it.
Buy pickup rings for them.
http://www.fretsonthenet.com/other_parts.htm
There is section with custom rings for EMG 707, etc.
Hey man, thanks alot I was searching friutlessly for pickup rings for it. You rock!
I actually kind of like the look without the ring. I've been playing the Schecter Hellraiser 7 strings a lot lately and just realized they had no rings. So heck I'm just going to go for it without the ring haha.
I agree that no pickup rings looks really clean. What I don't like is the routing job done to make them fit. It's alittle sloppy. Sweet Explorer in your pic. Explorers are without a doubt my favorite shape. I had 3 at one time. A 2001 Mars Exclusive Diamond Sparkle Gibson Explorer, an 86' Gibson Explorer and a 98' ESP Custom Explorer. I only have the ESP left, I'll take that guitar to the grave w/me. The Diamond Sparkle didn't play very good, I think that Gibson's quality control slipped on that one. I traded the 86' for a Variax 500. I do still have my V's. An 84' Gibson V and a 99' Gibson Gothic V.
I think you've got the exact same 7 string Epiphone Les Paul I have. Except you have different pots and all the cosmetic hardware taken off (pickguard, etc)
This is mine. Just got it Thursday.
I'm going into my local guitar shop tomorrow to get two 707s put in it. Like you said it needs the extra routing. But I was really glad to see these pictures so I have a very good idea of what my guitar would look like without the pickguard and the circular around the pickup switch. Which is what I'd planned on doing.
Cool, I'm glad you were able get a preview of what you're gonna have done. It looks alot cleaner without the pickguard and circle around the PU selector, the black flame finish is too pretty to hide. Hey what you going to do with the original PU's?
I'm not really sure what I'm going to do with the old pickups. Probably the same I did with my Explorer. Just threw the old one's in the EMG box haha. Now that I see the pickup rings I think I may wait on bringing this guitar in to get the pickups put in. I imagine it would just be easier to give them the rings and the pickups to do all at once. I would probably get the Matte Black rings just so it somewhat blends in with the body. I just love how clean it looks without all the hardware garbage (not that it's bad stuff haha).

Looks great with the EMG's! I'll bet it rocks.
Thanks Slingy, it does.
If you like 7 strings and Explorers. Eventually this baby is going to be coming out.
Matt Heafy from Trivium's two new babies. On the right. White Gibson Explorer 7 string *drool*. I talked to him at Mayhem Fest last Saturday and he said it should be coming out to the public eventually. I actually contacted Gibson about making me the same guitar and they said they couldn't do it. Even after Matt had his made. He found that odd when I told him so he said he'd look into it.
And yeah man, that Explorer is my baby. I've had her for 6 or 7 years now. Only mods are EMG 85 (B) & EMG 81 (N) and a bone nut. She's the nicest guitar I've ever played. I've got a question for you actually:
Have you noticed on the Les Paul that it's a pain to get to the high frets because the neck gets to bulky? That's why I like about my Explorer. It's so smooth.
-Chris
That headstock on the 7 string Explorer looks long, like you should take it out on the ice with you. My ESP had 2 EMG 81's in it, I think having the same pickup in both spot is stupid. I replaced the neck EMG 81 with an EMG 60. I put the neck 81 in the bridge of my 84' V. I also put a graphite nut and Planetwaves auto trim locking tuners on the ESP. And yes I've noticed the bulkiness of the neck on the LP. I've been play that guitar alot at home, it's easier to sit down and play than the Explorer or V, but with the band I've been playing my Gothic V or my snow camo Wasburn 333. What I've noticed is from playing that LP with the neck being big and bulky is it really makes regular guitars seem alot easier to play.
Nice guitars dude. When I got into playing guitar believe it or not my two choices was between the Epiphone Goth V or the Explorer. I chose the Explorer.
So is the 7 string just two 707s in your's?
I'm actually thinking of seeing what it would cost to file down the heel of the neck on the LP. See what it would cost me. You know as well as I do with Explorer the necks you can jump right to that 22nd fret without skipping a beat. I'm not much of a soloist but I'd like better access.
Also, Matt's 7 string Explorer has 24 frets. Could explain the longer neck.
Actually in the bridge is a 707 which is an 81 and in the neck is the 7 string version of an 85, not sure what it's called. I'm not the one that put the EMG's in, but I probably would have. These 7 string LP's were only made for 6 month in 2000. These things are pretty rare, doesn't really mean that they are going to be worth alot. But still, I won't be making any more modifactions to the guitar. So make sure that's what you really want before you start filing away. If you are having problems playing it, put in the shop to get a setup. If it's done by someone good, it can drastically change the way the guitar plays and feels. Also if you are struggling playing leads up the neck, tighten you guitar strap and raise the guitar up a bit. When I 1st started playing guitar I want to play rythem w/few leads. I bought the longest guitar strap I could, and wore the guitar the lowest I could get it. I've always been the only guitarist in the bands I've been in, so more and more lead work fell on my shoulders. Over the years two things have happened. One, my action is getting lower, I used to like the action rather high. I liked the guitar to fight me alittle. Two, guitar has been creeping higher and higher. It's still rather low, I don't like the way the guitar looks too high up, so I'd rather fight it if need be then jack it too far up.
Actually the EMG 707 is basically the equivalent of the EMG 85 and the EMG 81-7 is the 81 equivalent. I actually just ordered an EMG 707 & EMG 81-7 on Musician's Friend. Going to have them installed in the next week I hope.
Now that I look I see it it appears to be 707 neck, 81-7 bridge which is pretty much the standard. I'm doing 707 bridge, 81-7 neck instead. I like that combo.
Can't wait! ![]()
85 is a great bridge pickup! I've used an 81 there too which is more common. Also great! That Epi is starting to sound very interesting to me as I'd like to try a seven stringer and love EMG's.
I've decided I'm going to try and get the heel on the neck of the guitar filed down. So I can get to that 22nd fret easier. Once I get the pickups installed I'm going to probably try and get some sound clips of the guitar through my 5150 half stack and I'll post some links on here.
Good luck with that. While I believe in caution, I do know that you got to do what you got to do sometimes. My neighbor custom builds motorcycles. I've been giving his guitar lessons and him bass lessons. Anyhow I'm decided to give him my 84' V to do a custom paint job on. You are right on those EMG's in the LP. I have 81's in the bridge of both my ESP and 84' V. In the neck of the ESP is a 60 and the V is some really old EMG that I know nothing about. Definitely post some clips when you got it straight.
Nice pic. Especially with the home brew equipment in the back ground. Last week I went tot he home brew store for ingredients then went over to Best Buy and picked up an PODX3 for $344.99. See my post under Gutiar Center thread on this site to see the other deals they offered me. Hopefully alot of you guys have sons like mine too!
That's funny that you noticed the homebrew equipment in the pic. I brew beer, but I had just made 5 gallons of watermelon wine when that pic was taken.
I've got a batch of beer going now and I'm going to start a kit wine today. Don't drink too much at a time...
wow, nice les paul. wish I'd known about them, I might have tried to get one... but here in the UK they seem as common as rocking horse sh1t, lol
if you like to check out other people GAS purchases, or show off your own, check out this group: http://line6.com/community/groups/gas-show-tell I hope to get a few more members posting what they've bought :-)
Thanks man. I'll check it out.
Just got my LP back last night from the shop. Those pickup rings they did in fact order from that website for me. I'm not sure if the place I sent my guitar had to fix the pickup rings. Supposidly the guy who I got the pickups from (the guy who runs that website) does not make rings for archtop guitars. So I don't know but they fit it seems. So here's the finished product.
Dude....that looks sweet! I have to get them on mine, I'm tired of it looking like crap, especially since I've been playing it alot in my new band. I took the Rythm/Lead off the pickup selector, looks alot better without it on there. Good deal man.
Yeah, how do you get that plate off the easiest? hahaha. Around the toggle switch.
Take the cover off the back of the guitar where the toggle switch is at. Screw off the cap of the switch. Support the switch on the inside with one hand and unscrew the nut on the front. Once the nut is off, you take the plate right off. Then just put it back together. Just make sure you hold the switch in place when tightening so that it where in needs to be and not twist in there. Should only take you a few minutes to pull it off.
Yeah, I can't get the front off. That stupid part won't unscrew. Tearing my fingers up trying to take it off.
It won't come off with your hands. Be careful with a cresent wrench or see if you can get a socket over it. Don't forget to support the inside of the switch, you don't want to pull the wiring out.
I didn't pull the wiring out. I just bent the damn metal inside the switch in the cavity so the switch doesn't hold anymore. F***! So I'm going to have to buy a new switch an install it.
Dude...that sucks man. I don't understand how that happened. Shouldn't have been that difficult. Can you solder, it's easy to pop another one in. I don't like the gibson style switches. I buy the more compact ones from Carvin. They hold up alot better in my opinion.

Hey how are making out with switch? Looks like I'm going to have to put a new one in mine too. I just noticed yesterday when I switch from the bridge to the neck PU, it's dead. I have to flick it a few times and then it'll work. Good thing I have one of those switches new in the package in my toolbox. I usually order 3 or 4 of those at a clip.
I had a friend of mine put the switch in for me. Funny you mention that dead spot. He said if I had a problem with it cutting out in the middle position to let him know. Her must have had the same problem. I haven't so far.
I kind of liked the black switch on the Les Paul so I left it on. Plus it didn't come of easily so I left it alone haha.
Check it out.
Looking good man, the switch I'm going to put in is all black, metal and tip. Glad it worked out for you.
Yeah. My switch tip broke off my Explorer a few years back so I threw the cream colored cover on it haha. All black guitar with the random cream cover. Just left the black one that came on the new switch for the LP.
Oh yeah, see that in the pic you posted. That's kinda funny. Nothing wrong with that.
Nope. Just need to throw some thicker strings on the 7 string. Kind of like playing with spaghetti strings right now.
Hey, so what Line 6 gear are you using?
None actually hahaha.
Peavey 5150 head w/ Crate Blue Voodoo Cab. Maxon OD808 Overdrive pedal and BOSS Noise Suppressor.
That's cool, whatever gives you a tone you're happy with. That a pretty straight forward rig.
Yeah it's pretty straight forward. All you really need. Don't need all this extra stuff. Only reason I found this thread was because I searched google for "Epiphone 7 string" haha.
Really that's how you found this site? That's too funny.
Cool guitar! I have one that looks just like it but mine has black hardware and I used black electrical tape as pickup rings b/c the guy that did the routing didn't do a very good job. Mine has an EMG 707 in the Neck and EMG 81-7 in the bridge.
I actually own 3 more: Black all original, Sunburst all original, Sunburst w/ pickguard removed and changed pickups but I can't remember what I replaced them with.
I also have 3 of the Epi Flying V 7 Strings all black. They are so light and play almost as good as the Les Pauls.
If you're wondering why I have so many it's b/c I keep one of each in perfect condition for studio use and the others for playing live and I happened to find most of them for under $200 on eBay.
Have you seen the 7-string Explorer? http://www2.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/Explorer/Gibson-USA/7-String-Explorer.aspx
No, WOW that's sweet! Explorer's are my favorite shape.
my neighbor had a Hamer explorer and that thing was so f-ing HEAVY i couldn't see playing it on a regular basis. the heaviest guitar that i've owned was an Ibanez X-ing MIDI guitar and it was just miserable to put on. some people hate the chambered Les Pauls but, personally, i'd like to be able to stand upright into my 60's. that said my first "oh god i've got to have that guitar" guitar was Matthias Jabs' (sp?) black/white explorer--with or without spandex arm bands, the hottest looking guitar on MTV (they used to play music videos.) this 7-stringer might be worth the chiropractic care.
That's awesome man. I wouldn't mind one of those V's too. I have 2 Gibson V's now. An 84' and a 99' Gothic.
Stay in the mix and in the know.
