Did anybody change the topnut of a Variax-700 tremolo with a Graph-Tech nut ? Wich model to use? Experiences ?
were it me id put a fender roller nut .. which i did on my strat
What size does such a roller nut have ?
this is the roller nut installed on a strat neck. it comes with shims to get proper height on both ends. this solved all my problems with using the tremelo and going out of tune comletely..
to install this way is easy enough.. but it also comes with a instalation saddle made of plastic. that rquires removal of the front piece of wood.. that is obviously not necessary as you can see. and save mine would have fit into the slot as it was. it doesnt have to be perfect because you can ajust scale length and intonaton on each individual saddle..
again this made all the difference when staying in tune and using the tremelo. ive put roller nuts on just about every termelo guitar i own.. and roller bridges on the ones with a gibson tunamatic bridge..
the first pic is one of my personal strat with the plastic base for the fender roller nut . as i said this way requires making alterations to the neck.. the second is of a mity might roller nut which was the first one i ever put on its on an epiphone wildkat. this guitar also has a bridge with roller saddles. both guitars stay right in tune even if dive bombing. of the two i personally prefer the fender nut. both of these instalations are non reversable. the one above using the existing slot is reversable.
What is the width of a Fender neck than ? Or come these roller nuts in different sizes too ?
I went with the Earvana nut. Great mod, am very happy with it.
Edit: Just noticed you were asking about a tremolo fitted guitar. Mine is a 500, hardtail.
What size does that Earvana nut have? So i can check if it fits the Variax 700.
Looks fine , but the problem is that the tremolo changes the tension every time you use it.So i think this will not solve it . What size does the neck of your Variax have?
yep the tremelo releases tension. unless yours is floating and you can go a bit the other way. but in general it releases it then coming back the strings stick in the nut a bit.. some people solve this problem by opening the string groves a tic. and believe it or not shaving pencil lead in to the grove for lubricant... graphite you know..
the nut and the neck width on my strat is 1 and 5/8 standard strat neck.
as to the neck width of my variax i couldnt tell you i transplanted it long ago. and its in a box waiting for transplant now. into an epiphone dot.. never liked the feel of the 300.
somewhere on here are the specs for the variax necks.. even though the headstocks are different im pretty sure the neck specs other than headstock are the same .
Stay in the mix and in the know.
