Headphones problem with the Pod HD300.

So I recently got the the Audio Technica ATH-M50s Headphones, hooked them up to my Pod HD300 and the sound I hear is extremy sharp/fuzzy/artificial. The ATH-M50s are high quality monitor headphones but still they sound bad..
Is this because the ATH-M50s have an impendence of 38ohms and the preferred impendence level for pods is 150-600 ohms?
Is there anything I can do to get a good sound from the headphones? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!!
Some people have claimed good results with a headphone amp/IEM system but I don't really know enough about the physics there to be confident in this. I guess maybe they provide an impedance match but I don't really know.
