Tyler Variax Acoustic Sounds

I've posted a couple of original songs where I used the JTV-59 Variax Acoustic Dreadnought model at:
www.reverbnation.com/breadlinepreachers.
Simple Life Matters uses DADGAD tuning.
That's What's Up is standard tuning.
Regards
Chuck Beatty
Hey Chuck - thanks very much for sharing. The recordings sound great - sounds like you have mic'd up and recorded an actual dreadnought acoustic.
Would you mind sharing exactly how you did the recording (eg: was the JTV just DI'd or did it go via a desk and some fx or via an HD500 or ???) and what eq and fx you put on the guitar to get that authentic sound?
Thanks very much.
Best Regards
Eddie
Yes, very impressive indeed. I would have never guessed that this was a JTV if I had heard the song and tried to deduce what was used. Nice.
Chuck Beatty and his JTV. That's what's up!
Love that steam engine harmonica thing at the end of the song.
Hey thanks guys! I went directly mono through a M-Audio USB interface. I then added Izoptope Ozone-5 as a plug-in and used the warm acoustic preset (EQ, Reverb, slight compression, and Harmonic Exciting).
One more thing. I put 0.013 guage strings on the JTV - with a wound G. I think that is a big part of the sound.

Ah... that's an interesting and important detail, indeed. That's the first I've heard of anyone putting such a heavy gauge on a Variax. I'd be very curious to know how that affects the tone of the electric models and other acoustics. It would definitely make it a little more difficult to do string bending.
Oops. I've actually eased to 0.011" with a wound G. But I did have 0.013" for a while. Either way, bending can be a challenge. But, since I play in a duo, I rarely solo.
That's kinda funny! I'd have to say that since I often solo, I rarely duo.
Me and Billy G. loves us some .008's!
That is funny.
Thanks very much for the information Chuck.
Two very important facts there - the string gauge and type and the software plug-in to post process the sound. I don't have that plug-in.
What make of strings do you use?
Also, did you have your JTV-59 Volume and Tone controls both set to 10? Or did you adjust either?
Great tracks and great recordings! ![]()
I use D'Addarrio. It's hard to find any other with a wound G. The volume control is set at ten, but the tone is all the way off.
Thanks very much for the info Chuck!
Actually - one more piece of info needed - what flash level was your JTV59 on when you did the recording? Was it 1.71 or 1.81 or 1.82?
The acoustic models and the way the tone control interacted with the acoustic models changed between those releases.
Thanks in advance.
I'm glad to share. My JTV-59 was updatedd to 1.82 before I made the recordings..
Thanks so much Chuck!
Very useful to know all of that in the pursuit of such an excellent acoustic recording tone! ![]()
My pleasure. I'll sort through my files over the weekend and post some live recordings.
Y'all are so nice, I posted Ruby Ruby at:
http://www.reverbnation.com/breadlinepreachers
Standard tuning processed through the same Ozone preset. Except this time I hyped the low end a bit. I also added a quarter note kick drum loop that reinforces the bottom.

Who needs to bend strings on a guitar when you can solo with your kazoo!
Kazoo is a blast!
Thanks for posting your music.
Even though I know it's a Variax per your posting, my listening experience tells my brain it's an acoustic guitar!
Not knowing would have created an even stronger illusion.
I'm very encouraged by this as acoustic sounds are a big part of my interest in Variax.
Thanks. I've had every Variax since they came out. I've always liked the acoustic and open tuning ability.
Stay in the mix and in the know.
