Variax 700 Model Select Knob requires frequent re-calibration

My mode select knob on my Variax 700 recently got out of calibration. It got off by one position and I couldn't get down all the way to CUSTOM 1. So I learned how to calibrate it here:
http://line6.com/support/docs/DOC-3857
and that fixed it, and all was fine for a couple of weeks. Then before a gig, I did my usual routine of swapping out the batteries, went to play and found the encoder was again out of whack.
So is there something else I can look at, or is it time to send this in for service? I know I don't want to have to calibrate the encoder once a week.
Thanks for any advice or hints.
The switch is a potentiometer. It's stepped to deliver different resistance values for each position on the selector. If the pot is dirty or worn, it will give a wrong resistance value and the guitar model selected will be "out".
Try this. Work the selector through its full range a dozen or so times. This might get rid of any dirt or corrosion in the pot. After doing that, recalibrate the selector.
If that doesn't work the selector pot may need to be replaced. Give it a go, good luck & let us know how it goes.
Cheers,
Crusty
