Thinking of changing my live rig.

I have two Tech 21 power engine 60's and two Gator Cases G-112A's. I love the sound it produces with my HD500, I also love the cases double as amp stands. My problem is I have a Mercedes Benz GLK 350 and I can't fit them in the vehicle. I'm thinking of getting rid of this setup, and buy a set of powered monitors. Any suggestions?
not to be a wisenheimer but get a different vehicle or another one. if you drive a benz, i'm guessing you can afford one.![]()
Trailer?
I am struggling to think of another, more portable solution. The Tech21's are not exactly huge. Not sure powered monitors would be much smaller. Anyone ...?
You are correct, the Tech 21's fit but when I put them in the cases it doesn't.
Maybe I am missing something but have you considered getting soft covers for the Tech 21s? All my gear has soft covers and despite the usual knocks moving from gig to gig it all still looks good.
You say you are used to moving lots of air I think in that case you are in for a bit of a shock moving to monitors, for me they just don't have the same on-stage feel of a real guitar amp. I have gone from Tech 21 PE to monitors back to a real guitar Amp (first one in four years) - guess which one I prefer from a sound and feel point of view
.
The advantage of monitors and going studio direct to the PA was the speed of set up and tear down plus consistent sound at every gig with only a few tweaks of the board - bliss. However I don't regret giving all those advantages up.
Thanks for the ideas. I do have the Tech 21 vinyl covers for both amps, but I really like the cases because of the retracktable handles and wheels. But mainly because they make really great stands for the amps.
I know what you mean the Tech 21s are quite low down, they definitely need something to get them off the floor. I used to have a foldable amp stand but again you might not find one of these high enough.
A should add that going to the PA is not a bad option by any means - I did this for 4 years - I was quite happy but eventually yearned for that real amp feel again.
Thank you for the thoughts. I guess I'll try some powered monitiors and sell my power engines. I only used them twice.
I guess I'm a little curious how you would use powered monitors in a live situation. Would you use them simply to hear yourself, or would you plan to use them for your FOH sound as well? Do you currently mic your Power Engine's?
I think I would use one on the floor in front of the HD 500, and one on a stand as a side fill with a mic for the house system.
It seems a little weird to me to mic a powered monitor. For one thing, a monitor is going to have both a woofer and a tweeter, so if you just mic the woofer, you'd be missing out on some of the top end. Also, I imagine you'd be running in studio direct mode, so you'd be micing a speaker that's output is already a model of a miced cabinet. I think if you go the monitor route, you really need to go direct to the board rather than trying to mic them.
That makes sense. I guess i'm so used to "moving air" to get a tone. LOL Do you know of any brand monitor that would be suitable.
That 'moving air' thing is definitely relevant to me. I have to be able to get a sense of impact when I hit the guitar hard on a hard song. Whenever I have run into FOH without good monitoring I just get a sense of detachment. Maybe the audience are melting but I am left cold.
Good monitors are therefore critical. Perhaps a QSC K10 on it's side.
Thank you very much.
I was thinking upon the same lines as jimsreynolds - if you search the forum you can only see good comments about the QSC K series. I used to have a Mackie SRM350 (10" woofer) which had small footprint and was insanely light-weight. So small in fact I contemplated getting another 1, but the Mackie stuff seems to get mixed reviews these days so although I was happy I am not sure that I would go as far as a 'recommend'
Thank you.
buy one Roland JC120.
I run a POD HD500 for my live rig. I run the XLR-out to FOH, and they mix my signal into my monitor mix. If I don't have a monitor mix, then I bring a powered monitor or two (JBL EON 10") with me. I run them off of the 1/4"-outs. If there's an available aux send, then I'll just run my own seprate monitor mix from FOH. For gigs where I use in-ears, I don't need the powered monitors at all.
The entire rig is one gigbag containing the HD500, one gigbag with all cables, pics, etc..., two guitar cases, one foldable stand, and two JBL EON's. It fits into most any car out there. Just thought my setup was a good example on what you're looking to do.
Sounds very flexable. I would probably like to run in studio direct mode to the monitor usinf XLR, then out the monitor to the house. Any thoughts?
I did this for a while with a Mackie TH12A. However, I've recently switched to a PE60 instead of the Mackie (running xlr out of the HD500 to the PE then the xlr out of the PE to FOH) but I'm still using studio direct.
That's what I've been doing. I like the XLR to the Power Engines running in stereo. Quiet and punchy.
How was the Mackie?
That'd be fine too. Yes, I run studio direct. I just use the 1/4" out to the monitors because it's short and easy. If you were running stereo out from the POD, it'd be easier to have the XLR's feed the PA, while the 1/4"s feed your monitors. My monitor cable run is usually only 6 feet max, and balanced/unbalanced won't really make much different at that length.
I do a lot of recording in my home studio, where my pod goes direct into the computer. Since everything I do with the pod is "studio direct", i can easily transition from studio to gig to practice. It's just simpler for me.
The other thing I carry is an extension cord and power conditioner. This way, I can run one power cord up to the front of the stage, and the HD500 and monitors can all connect to it.
Thank you for your help.
