I'm hoping, James, that the problem's a near-field RF thing that's due to the positioning information not being as clear on the video as it is here:
Also, here's a link to a clear "step by step" which you may wish to review.

The issue is that you are likely not getting the antenna "elements" lined up. The actual antenna element in the rubber duckie antenne is just above the joint and the best spot to line that up with on the handheld is usually jst lower than the LCD screen on the back side.
As you get to that spot slide the HH up and down a little and you should see the screen on the HH flash on and off when you hit the right spot.

Hi Guys, thanks for the help!
The real issue I since discovered was that the music store that I purchased the system from had put the wrong mic in the box, one from a XD-V55, they look identical ecept if you are paying attention on start up. With the right mic it works fiine! Only took a 2 hour trip to get it sorted!

Wow ... that must have been fun.

We're mainly just glad that it was, James!
It's the sort of thing that happens so easily when a lot of gear is scattered around on a busy day.
The truly positive aspect of this is that your having documented this misadventure may well have enabled others to avoid similar pain and angst.
Think of your time and trouble as having planted a big red flag over the ongoing need for rigorous discipline, even (or especially) at day's end, when we just want to pack, load and escape to the bar ...where some of us might (just possibly) become loaded in an entirely different way.
