L6 LINK AES/EBU 50'

The manual states

 

We strongly recommend the use of 110-ohm AES/EBU digital cables for use with Line 6 LINK connections for StageScape and StageSource. The use of standard XLR cables may yield inconsistent results because of the varying quality of commercially-available XLR cables. Cables longer than 50 feet are not recommended for L6 LINK.

 

Has the Line6 Product Team or anybody else tried the system with an AES/EBU or digital DMX cable that exceeds 50 feet?  In our setting we are using the Line6 as an effects fill augmenting the mains and may need 75 feet.

 

Any concerns about connecting two 25' AES/EBU or digital DMX cables together for the manual's total stated 50' maximum?

    Yes, we have tested cables that are longer than 50 feet, however we only recommend using up to the length of 50 feet.  If you use longer than 50 foot cables, they may still work, however we do not recommend doing so, because you may experience intermittent audio from that speaker.  If you are doing this, I can't stop you, but I definitely recommend to have that as your last speaker in the chain in order to mitigate any signal loss you may experience to that one speaker and not subsequent speakers.

     

    I also do NOT recommend connecting two cables together in order to complete the distance between two speakers.  I've done that here over short distances and it has worked, however that does not mean that the signal will not become intermittent.

     

    AES/EBU cables are also recommended over DMX - despite their similarities - because AES/EBU has a differnent impedence than DMX cables, which is more advantageous for the data transmission.  Again, I have tested DMX cables and they have worked over short distances, however I do not recommend them.

     

    In closing, use of non AES/EBU cables or connecting 2 cables together may still function, however we do not support anything other than 1 AES/EBU cable - less than 50 feet long - between speakers.

      I'm glad I saw this because up till now I was under the impression standard XLR cables worked with L6 Link because of the information at http://uk.line6.com/l6link/  however, the information here contradicts this.

       

      I had already earmarked some of the Planet Waves cables described here before realising I need the AES/EBU cables for when I have my Stage Source equipment.

       

      Maybe an update could be made to the above page to prevent further confusion........

       

      The upside is, the the Pro Snake 25 ft AES/EBU cables I managed to find via Thomann are actually cheaper than the Planet Waves XLR cables suggested!!!

        Just looking for for a bit of clarification here as if all goes according to plan, I'll be ordering my Dream Stage at some point this week.

         

        When it says the maximum recommended length of AES/EBU cable is 50 ft, I am under the assumption that this is the max length for any one cable in the system and that it is possible to run more than one 50 ft cable in the system.

         

        To clarify, I'll be using the M20d with 2 L3s and to L3m's for the FOH sound and will be mixing from the FOH too and I plan on running the following L6 Link set up:

         

        M20d > 1 x 50 ft cable > Left Sub > 1 x 8 ft cable >  Left L3m > 1 x 50 ft Cable > Right Sub > 8 ft > Right L3m.

         

        The total length of AES/EBU cables being used would total 116 ft.

         

        Is this a pefectly acceptable set up for L6 Link?
