Is my second hand HD500 broken?

Hi all,
I have bought a second hand HD500 on a auction site here in Holland.
After receiving the device I connected it to my pc, but my computer did not recognise the hd500. Pluging it in should make my pc come up with a notification there is a device connected trhu usb.
After examining the usb connector I found that the pins where not making contact to the plug. Since this device is no longer under warranty I decided to take it to a electronics repairman to install another usb port. Or just weld a usb cable to the board.
He tried that but even then the pc wont recognise the device being plugged in. Since we have no service centres here in Holland I come here to ask for advice.
I suspect the software is damaged on the hd500, although it works fine. Its still on firmware 1.31 and I need the latest updates.
Can the software be damaged? Is there a way to check on the device. Is there really no hard reset option?
Maybe there is a plug on the board which line 6 service centres use to examine the device or to repair the software.
I really dont know what to do. The seller wont help me out so I am on my own here.
What can or should I do now?
Thanx for helping me out here.

Well don't despair just yet.
I just scanned through some of the HD500 manuals and I couldn't find (in 5 minutes) how to reset the unit.
But this is what I'd try. Try to find out how to do a "Re-Load" (or re-flash) of the Flash memory and/or also a "Factory Reset". Either one will dump all the patches the previous user created... but that should be OK with you... it'll be like a brand new unit again all ready for your stuff.
Upon doing this, hopefully the inside logic will get straightend out and the USB communication will work again.
There have been posts about the fragile nature of the USB port so if it's broke you may have to send it to an authorized Line 6 repair center... even if it's in the USA.
Lastly, USB communication is nice and speeds up the editing process but you will be able to use the unit without it.
Oh hey... I just found this on how to "reset" in another post:
"Unplug the power, Press and Hold the left arrow then power up (by plugging in the power cord). Let it boot up completely and release the arrow. This should reset the hardware."
When he says "left arrow" that would be on the 4 position button between "Enter" and "Move" to the right side of the display.

Yes, it seems that the USB port on the device is broken and hence the HD500 is locked at the current firmware version until this is fixed. Unless the broken USB was made clear in the sale description you may have a case with the auction site managers or the seller (assuming he/she wants to keep a good reputation on the site). I would return it if you can and look for another one.
If you want to keep the device and try to restore the usb connectivity.......
Like scottyo78 says, holding down the left nav key while bootiung will reset the global parameters, including setlist names (not presets) to their factory defaults. After doing this you should also recalibrate the pedal.

However, this does not reinstall the factory presets. The only way to do this in the HD500 is to reinstall the firmware, or use HD500 Edit to reload a previously saved bundle of the factory presets.
Here's how to update/reinstall firmware:

Of course, that will only work if you have a working usb connection - which seems to be your problem. Unfortunatley, since you have already tried unsuccesfully to have it repaired by an electronics repairman, I think you need to either find another local repairman, hopefully with better results, or send it to an authorized Line 6 service centre, absorbing the costs. Sorry about that.
