Allow me to invite you to express your outrage on the thread here http://line6.com/support/thread/86302?tstart=30 and speculate on the possible date of release for the HD 500/Pro/Bean here http://line6.com/support/thread/86455?tstart=0

Not really an amp per say, but it would be sooo kewl if I could get that same warm fenderish organic tubey surup tone that my Vox Tonelab desktop puts out when the VR gain is cranked. And next to a  Keeley,  this little unit has the best sounding compressor in the business to my ears...

I think I posted earlier in this thread but I'll do it again.

    #1 Roland JC-120

#2 the "small tweed" model from previous pods

Soldano SLO, with all its channels like the 300 and 400 series

    Komet 60.

And of course, a pure acoustic amp, it´s ridiculous that we have a variax with acoustics models and the pod has not a proper acoustic model for them

Re: POD HD 500 - New amps

I actually subscribe to this thread.  I am now somewhat humored by it and originally guilty of commenting on new models.  I have tweaked all of the limits of my HD500 and to me, it is fairly indispensable.  That being said, lets discuss amp modeling.  Do high gain amps have NO clean settings?  Does a Fender Bassman have a DRIVE knob?  The modeled sounds of the amps in my HD500 are modeled amp settings, not amps.  The only one that is usable for me playing through tube amps is the low wattage Plexi.  I am an old Rock and Roll guy.  I have tweaked everything else until I am tweaked out.  While I have not played though a number of the actual amps that are contained in the pod library, I have played through some, and in most cases, they are not how I would set my sound using those amplifiers.  This device is almost indefinitely tweakable.  I keep seeing suggestions for more choices and I wonder how many view this device as a tool for signal processing and not a tweak toy.  Outside Line6 circles, I have seen a lot of frustration with it, and until I tried to keep it simple, I was one of those guys.  If you want a Diezel with 28 knobs or a Matchless with 3, you may find something close with this device, but it won't be either of the two.

My advice for those who are looking for that thing that they don't have yet, KEEP TWEAKING, FIND YOUR TONE, LOCK IT IN, and PLAY GUITAR!!

Re: POD HD 500 - New amps

"Do high gain amps have NO clean settings?  Does a Fender Bassman have a DRIVE knob?"

They don't clean up all the way when reducing Drive, but it's a lot better than prior Pods... At least we're getting the SLO clean channel.  I wouldn't mind also having the Recto's.

As far as Drive knobs for amps that didn't have them...what that is actually adjusting is the preamp Volume knob on the modeled amp - so your pushing the amp's power section (and in some cases slightly pushing the amp's pre-amp output tube as well).  You'll notice the Master DEP is set to 100% for all the non-Master Volume amps.  Being able to change this is basically like having a modded amp, so that there's an attenuator between the pre-amp output tube and the power section.  So you could dime the pre-amp but still keep the power section from distorting, which you couldn't do on the original amp.

Some models have controls that don't exist on the originals, like Mids and Presence on the Fenders.  They do affect the tone.  Personally, I feel they should have been made to do nothing, so the controls are authentic, but I guess it doesn't really hurt so long as they don't change the way the modeling works, just the final EQ.

Of course you are right - Line 6 can't fully model many amps with lots of knobs, but that's not what they try to do.  AFAIK, not many modeling manufacturers attempt to do that either.  For instance, when modeling a Mesa/Boogie Mark IV, which has LOTS of options beyond bass/mids/treble/presence controls, what is actually modeled is ___ channel with bright pot pulled, bass shift pulled, etc.  So you lose a lot of the versatility of the original amp, unless they model every possible combination of the settings you can't tweak.  But generally they aim for the more popular options.

If you want super-precise authenticity, go buy the actual amp.  Line 6 and others are getting close to authentic tone, but only for a subset of available options of the original, and that's just the way its got to be most of the time.  Amps are different, and their available controls don't neatly fit into the common mold the modeling devices have laid out.

Also, there could be DSP concerns.  The more versatile and the more controls needed to take into account equates to more processing time.  It's hard to design a device when 70% of the models use 4 controls, and the other 30% use 20.  So do you beef up the hardware for the 30% at additional cost to those who won't use those models?

Software models tend to incorporate more of such controls - all the switches and such.  They have much more tweakable UI's and more room to incorporate lots of features for models that require it.

Re: POD HD 500 - New amps

I agree with everything you said.  I am almost afraid of new amp models, because I know I will be trying to make them work for me and I will spend more nights trying to tweak my way to Zen.  I am pretty happy with what I have now, but I was pretty happy with  my rotary phone at one time.

Re: POD HD 500 - New amps

yes, i hear that.  hopefully new amps will be quicker to dial in.  for instance, the absence of a 5150 and Mesa Mark has had me trying numerous tweaks to the Uber to get it to sound like those.  I've finally got it about where I want it.  Hopefully if those amps are ever modeled, it'll take far less tweaking to get them where I want and I can have a more authentic tone.  But I would not be looking forward to repeating the amount of work i've already done. hehe
