POD HD Master Volume Routing

Hi,

I have just switched from POD 2.0 Pro to Pod HD Pro. One main feature of my old unit was that master volume only controlled output to 1/4" output jacks which I feed to my 4x12 cab. The master changed nothing on the XLR outputs that I run to the mixer in a live situation. I liked that since I could use the Master volume to control my Cab volume without changing anything for the soundman on my XLR outputs. Is it possible to do this with the Pod HD Pro? I hooked up the HD to the PA and my Cabinet last night and noticed that the Master volume now adjusts the volume to the 1/4" AND the XLR outputs.

Thanks

It is possible to take the Master Volume control out of the equation if you connect to a DT-xx amp by L6 Link, but as far as the analogue outputs go, the 1/4" and XLR outputs are tied together.

You can of course use the FX Loop positioned near the end of the signal chain and take a PA feed from the FX Send whilst setting the FX Loop mix level to 0% to allow the main signal to pass through to the XLR or 1/4" outputs however the output mode might cause problems with the signal to the PA

Or if your on-stage amp is like the Marshall JVM series where the amp's Master Volume control handles your overall level for personal monitoring, there would be no real need to touch the POD's Master control

    +1 to Nick_Mattocks.

I agree with the suggestion to use an FX loop send to feed the PA, but as he mentioned it might sound kinda strange depending on which output mode you are using. The other way to do is simply use the master volume on your amp to control your on stage amp volume, leave the POD HD master volume at full so it feed a nice signal to the PA.

Re: RE: POD HD Master Volume Routing

This is the same issue i've been having.

Running 1/4" outputs to power amp then cab, while sending XLR to PA. It means using the power amp level to control onstage sound.

Can anyone verify if this is a software of hardware issue? If software, is there a 'possibility' of having a fixed made if enough demand?

I guess the other way around it is to mix both channels to centre, use XLR Left for power amp (mono) and XLR Right for PA (mono). Would this work? Unless one of the two (power amp or PA) needs heaps more volume than the other, the master volume should send an even mix to both. Even a boost/cut in the mixer of that channel?

        Cheers

Re: RE: POD HD Master Volume Routing

I truly am stumped with this issue that is very obvious real and wide spread.  But honestly, this is not how my POD HD500 unit works and I have the same software 2.02 that everyone else has, but even before the update it worked with the master volume controlling ONLY the 1/4" outputs while nothing happens to the XLR outs if I turn the Master volume control up or down.

If it were software or a special patch I made - I'd share it with everyone, but it's just how the unit functions for me.  I wish I could give more info about the reasons why mine works and not everyone else's.  Sorry everyone - it must be something in my set up that is different than all who have this Master volume control issue.

I just thought of something I do that is NOT common practice by many using the POD HD Units.  I ALWAYS use the Studio /Direct output mode whether L6 linked to my DT amps or just the unit running alone.  Could this be the missing piece to this puzzle?

Re: POD HD Master Volume Routing

you could also try modding your unit.  the D>A converters should feed the signal to the attenuator the MASTER knob controls, then to some small amplifiers (probably different ones for XLR vs 1/4" outputs).  I would trace the wiring of the XLR outputs back to their amps, then trace the amps back to the MASTER attenuator.  Clip the wires from the attenuator to the amps and connect them to the wires in front the attenuator.  I'm probably over-simplifying it, but if you looked at it very carefully and patiently, you should be able to figure it out.  Of course you risk frying your unit and you certainly void your warranty.  Don't blame me if you mess anything up.
