Pod HD500 hissing noise

I have just recently purchased a pod hd500 and it has a huge hissing sound when plugged in. The hissing noise is constant in that it is the same level when I play and when i dont play. It is even there when I turn the voulme on my guitar down all the way. The only thing that makes it stop is if I turn the volume on the pod all the way down. I have tried messing with the settings, different guitar cables, different outlets, and different guitars with single coils and humbuckers. This is actually my second hd500...I sent my first one back with the same problem. So am I just unlucky and got two broken pod hd500s or am I doing something wrong?

is your pod connected to the computer and to an amp at the same time?

the problem could be there too

What are you plugging your POD HD500 unit into?  You mentioned all the things you tried including different guitars, etc., but left out what you are plugging into that you are hearing the constant hissing sound?

What hurghanico wrote could be one possible problem since you've had two units doing the same hissing thing.

If it's not too much trouble, please reply with what you are plugged into and how you are connecting from the HD500.

yeah, without more detail, it's impossible to help.  start with a clean slate - turn off all the amp models and effects in the pod signal chain.  use headphones connected to the pod rather than hooking up to an amp, etc.  see exactly what conditions there is or isn't hissing.  turn effects/amp models on and off one at a time.

      Re: Pod HD500 hissing noise

So just by simply plugging in the unit and now your second unit - you get a loud hissing sound even if no instrument or patch is running into a pair of headphones?

Wow...I'm completely stumped with this one.  If nothing is going in, and nothing is coming out other than a pair of headphones and a loud hissing is occurring - I've no idea where to even begin to start looking for the cause.  It's not inconceivable you got two bad units, but two bad units doing the exact same problem?  The odds of that are astronomical.

I'll keep reading and let others who might have a better idea where to start looking.  I'm sorry I have nothing to offer as help at this time to your situation.

bring your HD500 to a guitarist friend and let him try it with his instruments ..
If the problem persists, then yes, you've been really unlucky

if not, your searches are not over yet .. unless your friend does not convince you to sell it to him

Are you playing close to a neon light, tv screen or similar?   Those can cause noise in the circuitry if you are too close.  Try another part of your house if you have not already.

Check external environment as well. Could be power lines, tv/radio transmitter, mobile phone masts, etc. (Although, to be fair, this would probably have caused probelms elsewhere in the house already)

I would suspect the instrument, the cable or the environment in which you're playing long before the POD. Is it directional? Does the noise change depending on how you angle the guitar? Is the noise present with the guitar plugged in but turned down? Is it present with nothing plugged into the input jack?

I am having the same problem and it seems to be getting worse over time. Tonight at rehearsal it was almost unbearable. It occurs with just the unit, my guitar and headphones. More testing needed, but it should not be doing this.
