I'm afraid that's all the functionality you will get from the Shortboard with a Spider 30. A quick search on this site for the compatibility chart gets this page:
http://line6.com/footcontrollers/compatibility.html which indicates it works, but doesn't give details about the functionality. Note that Line 6 says the Shortboard does not work with the Spider IV 30 - an indication that all is not right with the Spider III either.

Ahh, see, the document that was throwing me off is at http://line6.com/support/docs/DOC-2127 and it indicates that all the buttons except the Function 2 button should work with the Spider III.
So I have to get a Spider IV 75 or greater before the Shortboard will live up to its full potential?

Yes. I would heartily recommend the SPider IV 75 (or higher power models). The improvements in sound (amp modeling and FX) are well worth the investment. Of course you may want to wait until the Spider 5 models come out, but that could be years.

ffbrgst is right, I have the same amp and same pedal board. although i do think that the tuner works as well....
i have all 3 versions of the pedal board, the express is a good fit for this amp. although i probably would have picked up the shortboard as well so that i'd be in better shape when it comes time to upgrade the amp.
