Pod XT - Problem upgrading from 1.01 and can't backup a bundle

Hi All,
I finally decided to upgrade my Pod XT tonight which I bought new a zillion years ago.
I plugged it into my Windows 7 laptop via USB and installed the drivers (4.2.5.4) and upgraded the USB firmware (1.12).
It asked me to then power off and on the Pod.
So far so good....
First problem - The Flash Memory option in Monkey shows " - " as the installed version in my Pod and the "update Selection" box remains greyed out so I can't upgrade to the latest version.
Second problem - I decided it would be a good idea to back up the original presets but when I try and save a bundle with monkey I get the message "
Error opening MIDI ports.
(Code 80009001) could not find specified MIDI device."
Any ideas?
Edit - I've just discovered this page - http://line6.com/support/docs/DOC-3827 and checked my Pod software version which is 1.01, does this mean I need to get a midi - USB connector in order to upgrade it ?
i would try plugging into a different usb port, sometimes it will reset the drivers...
MIDI SPORT UNO from M-AUDIO
I got a USB - MIDI connector, plugged it in and I see the MIDI out light flashing away on the connector whilst it does the update.
Then at the end it says it's completed successfully and to power off.
However, when I cycle the power and then check the version it still shows as v 1.01 on the Pod and when I plug it back into the laptop with the USB and fire up Monkey it still says "unknown".
Any ideas?
is it an m-audio midi sport uon?
No. Some no name brand but it works fine if I stick a keyboard in it so I don't see why it shouldn't work with the XT ?
because no name brands use a microsoft provided compliant driver.... and microsoft has no interest in the midi needs of musical instruments....
whereas m-audio has their own drivers that are quite robust and stable....
i have both... the no name works finr for some things... but it's not nearly as problem free as the m-audio one is after you get the latest drivers.
