POD HD500 & DT25 question (another one!)

Hi All,

 

Hopefully this is in the right area!

 

I love the distortion that comes from the DT25 - the distortion that comes from the pod is far too digital.

 

However, when I set my amp channels to do a high gain sound, it messes with some patches on the pod (for example "otherness" is a total mess).

 

So! I want to know if it's possible to have channel A or B on the amp my dedicated distortion channel, and have the other purely for the Pod. Essentially, switching between them from the pod.

    Assuming you are connecting the HD500 to your DT25 with the Line 6 Link, turning off the amp model (A) will allow you to use the DT25 pre-amp for your distortion channel, on channel B of the amp. However, all effects will be in the pre position in this mode.

     

    Channel A on the amp will be active when the amp model (A) on the HD500 is on.

     

    And you can set up one of the foot switches to turn the amp model on the HD500 on / off.

      I don't know what I'm talking about here as I've never done it, but I think 4CM (4 cable mode?) combined with L6 link might give you what you're looking for.

       

      From what I understand the signal chain is:

      1. Plug your guitar into the HD500 input.

      2. Connect the FX send of the HD500 to the input of the DT25.

      3. Connect the FX send of the DT25 to the FX return of the HD500.

      4. Connect the HD500 output to the FX return of the DT25.

       

      This places the DT25 preamp in the HD500 effects loop, allowing you to place it where you want in the HD500 signal chain.

       

      I also haven't used L6 link yet. L6 link also carries audio, so that could cause a problem. You could also use Midi instead of L6 link from the HD500 to the DT25 to control the Amp switching if that solves your problem.

       

      Hopefully someone who knows more about this will chime in here.

       

      You could also do a search on this forum for 4CM to see if it helps.

    i hate to burst your bubble, but i'm 99% sure that the distortion tone in the DT-XX is the same digital modeling in the Pod HD.  Whether you use the Pod HD "pre" model or the DT-XX topology, the tone should be the same, if you select the same model in each.  Which topology in the DT are you using for distortion?

    I can confirm one piece of this topic being discussed.  The DT amps have no preamp tubes.  All preamping is done digitally which makes these amps hybrids, not "all tube" amps as I've seen them described in other places & forums.

     

    I also cannot say with 100% certainty that the preamp digital modeling is the same as any of the POD HD preamp modeling.  I agree it would seem logical for a company to use the same design, but I honestly do not know and I don't think there has ever been this specific question asked & answered by anyone working at Line 6.

     

    I hope this helps at least a little in this discussion.

      The DT50s have 12AX7 preamps, the DT25 doesn't so at least on paper the DT50 has a little less modeling happening.

        The 12AX7s aren't acting as preamp (within the tone stack) valves.  When feeding more than one power amp valve (non open ended design) the dual triodes in a 12AX7 perform the phase splitting prior to sending the split signal to the power amp valves.  So, the 12AX7 in the DT25 is a phase splitter and one of the 12AX7s in the DT50 performs that function.  The 2nd 12AX7 in the DT50 goes after the fully digital preamp modelling.  It just "warms the signal up" a bit before it goes to the EL34s.

         

        The preamp tone in the DT amps is fully digital.

         

        This means that when using the PRE models in the POD HD via the L6 LINK, putting effects before the preamp is just like plugging pedals in front of the amp.  Effects placed after the amp modelling on the POD HD is akin to putting effects into the effects loop of a guitar amp, which means they are after the preamp but before the power amp.  This means that you can simulate having your distortions and wahs in front of the amp while putting your modulations, delays and reverbs into the effects loop (where they tend to sound better).

         

        The modelling in the DT amps is the same as in the POD HD units, but one needs to consider the entire signal path.  For example, the impedance of the input on the POD may not be identical to the impedance on the input of the DT amp or the capacitance due to different cabling lengths will have a different filtering effect on the signal.

    I'm a new user and if anyone has stumbled across my posts you'll see I was bitching and moaning that I couldn't emulate the sound of the "raw" DT25 when using my HD400 and trying to create patches for the sounds I was getting with the DT25.

     

    Don't lose hope, it is possible.

     

    Now I have patches setup for Clean Fender, Clean Vox, Dirty Vox, Cruncy Marshall and Mesa which sound just like what I was getting when plugged straight into the DT.

    It did take a bit of fiddling about (and removing the HD Edit PC software out of the equation as this just didn't work properly for me) but I got there in the end.

    However, i've just upgraded to the HD500, so i'm going to have to do it all again. D'oh!

     

    So the point i'm trying to make is that you don't need to switch between the Pod and channel B of the DT, you should be able to get the same sounds with a bit of experimentation and be able to save this as a patch.

     

    Oh yeah, I reckon a "proper" digital cable instead of an XLR for the L6 link helps too. Not sure why it should (surely digital is digital?) but to my ears it seems to sound better.
