Buzzy artifacts - normal or am I doing something wrong?

OK, so I pull the trigger on an HD500. Straight up, I'm kind of ambivalent on it after a few days or so. It's got some cool stuff, some not so cool stuff, but most of that's been kind of run over here ad nauseum so no comments on that.
But I *am* getting one thing that kind of bugs me and I'm not sure whether I'm doing something wrong and just haven't hit on how to get around it or it's just a *feature*. It's kind of a strange buzzy, after the fact artifact, It's most noticeable on bottom strings, although it is audible on the tops, and is most pronounced when hitting kind of in between heavy and light. Although it does still come through on light. Maybe I'd get used to it, but it bugs me to death right now, especially through the headphones.
Uploading a sample to illustrate - it's the
It's been present on most of the amp models, so it's not just the sample I'm uploading. I've tried the parametric (after the mixer), the levels aren't real out there either (drive on this one is about 2 o' clock, channel and master both at halfway, the interface is down low enough that I know it's not clipping. It's not my guitar - you take an unprocessed signal and it's fine. Tried messing with the DEP's and didn't get anywhere with those either. Although at this stage I tried so many things it's hard to keep track of every pathway and combination.
Not sure if this is the classic fizz that's usually discussed or something else, but it doesn't seem to be related to the amount of signal going in or coming out that I can tell.
Any ideas on what I might be doing wrong? Or is it just the nature of the beast when you're going direct?
hi gnieman
May be it s because the input 2 source is set to same. Set it to guitar, or guitar+aux+variax or anything else.
Hope it will help you.
bye.
Thanks Dave. Tried that. Along with eq'ing before and after the amp. Also checked to see where it occurs so I ran just few preamps without anything front or back and no cabinet. It's definitely the preamp doing it. The cabinet knocks a little off. But it's a really nasty buzzy thing and rather than me getting used to it, it's starting to irritate me more.
I actually get a better sound by just using a clean Deluxe and then running my Catalinbread DLS, RAH, and SFT pedals into that. That DOES sound pretty happening. But it kind of negates some of the value, ya know? I do really like the sound of the models overall. I just dialed in a Hiwatt patch that's dead on The Seeker by The Who. Only thing is, that fizzy, buzzy thing is even more noticeable on a trebly kind of patch like that. Took it down to the basement and ran it through the PA just to see if it was less noticeble. Ouch, when it's that loud there's no getting away from it.
Still on the fence. Need something to go direct with, and it *is* an alternative to a Weber Mass, I suppose, with some additional bells and whistles. But I still may try out an Eleven Rack. Wish it was a little easier to dial in something no frills.
Have you updated to the latest firmware?
Yeah, that's the latest. First thing I tried, actually. But after going through a lot of the commentary, I wasn't really expecting that either. I did read one that speculated it was strictly in the power stage, but my experiments with the preamp tend to contradict that.
I *did* manage to get it knocked down somewhat, but only by lowering the amount of distortion generated via the amp model and moving it over to things like the Tube Driver effect. Which again, kind of negates the value of the model. I've seen statements by some that this kind of thing is just coming because L6 is accurately modeling the noise coming from the amp. If that's the case, then I'm not sure this bunch is as smart as everyone gives them credit for. Assuming you have full control of the signal composition why would you choose to keep something undesirable. And given that it happens on different models I think it's just a software deficiency.
Again, I haven't ruled it out. It does actually sound better now and I was primarily interested in it as a recording tools rather than for live use. So I may just drop down to a 300/400 or Pod HD but I haven't made up my mind. Will probably use it for a band practice and see how it works out. And I may give an Eleven Rack a try.
I had the same issues but come to find out I had my pod hd500 next to my laptop because I was using Line 6 edit at the time. The laptop was giving me the buzz and hum. Also check your guitar cable. It may be giving you a microphonic sound if it has lost its ground. Increase your gate to see if the hum and buzz stops.
Stay in the mix and in the know.
