The USB connecter for workbench...

I have recently ordered the JTV69s But I wont get it for another month its back ordered.. Anyways I was wondering if the connecter that comes with workbench can be used as a audio interface for like garageband. I have not seen it in person so not sure what it entails.. I curently use a tone port gx with podfarm 2. But I thought I saw somewhere that you can save your variax setting in podfarm 2... Or do I pretty much have to go with the HD500 to get to control the variax in a patch by patch basis.. I like the simplicity of using a interface like toneport but I like the Idea of changing the variax in a patch by patch basis... I had ordered the HD500 a long time ago, like when they first came out and wasn't all that impressed but I like the way the variax interacts with it.. I sent back the HD500 but I may reorder one after I get the variax....
I don't think the usb connector for Workbench is a general audio interface - I doubt that you can use it to record into Garageband or any other recording program.
There are some older Pod products that also support Variax guitars, including the JTV. In particular, the Pod XT Live and the Pod X3 Live are other pedalboards that have the required VDI connection. They don't completely support the JTV as the HD500 does (e.g. using tone/vol knobs as controllers) but they do support storing/recalling a specific JTV model within the device patch.
the usb interface is only for updates and working with workbench. has no audio capabilities whatsoever.
Yeah I think I will have to try the HD500 again but I will wait till after I get the Variax. I would hate to set up my patches then have to redo them all after I start using the variax. I am sure if I tinker with the HD500 I can get most of the patches I have set up through PODfarm 2.. though I wish they had a simple interface with VDI hook up for Daws.. I would try the smaller HD300 but they don't have the VDI hook up. The HD500 was so huge to me, storing it an lugin it around seemed a pain..
There are other Pod devices that allow you to control Variax models from the device patch. The Pod XT Live and X3 Live/Pro also support this. The HD 500/Pro allow full control including using the JTV tone and vol knobs as controllers, as well as supporting the JTV Alt tunings, but the older devices mentioned above support model storage/recall within the patch. They are also cheaper since they will be used.
Furthermore, it will be a lot easier to reproduce your existing Pod Farm 2 tones with the X3 since the underlying modleing DSP is the same. In fact, you can transfer the tones directly between the X3 Live and Pod Farm using Gearbox. In some cases transferring tones from Pod Farm 2 to the X3 will not be identical due to some flexibility that Pod Farm 2 has that the X3 does not, but it will provide a good start, and it's a lot easier to dial in similar sounding tones in the X3 than in the HD500.
The HD500 tones are superior, and if you want to deal with the steeper learning curve the results will be worth it. But if you want the easiest path to keep your existing Pod Farm sounds and just add the JTV model control in your patch setup, the X3 Live is a better way to go. If/when you want better amp/FX tones (and the learning curve) then you could sell the X3 and get an HD500.
I am not sure of two things with the X3 live. The foot print size and weather or not it will store the tunings also????? Cause if it is the same as the HD500 I think I would just bite the bullet and start over again with patches.. When I had ordered the HD500 the first time it just seemed really large... I think the Clean amps sounded better but I couldn't tell a big difference with the high gain amp models... But also since then I have upgraded my Head phones so I may tell a larger difference in sound quality now also. And using the Variax (going pure digital may help clean things up allot). I have been using a hollow body les paul style guitar and unfortunately I can't shield it so there is allot of noise. especially with high gain settings.. ( drives me friggin nuts ( my strat was shielded so it was dead quiet).. But I like the tones I can get with my hollowbody.

It's an absolute beast. I also bought one and then quickly returned it because I could not stand the size of it... plus it was not well designed ergonomically with knobs that block the LED display at the out-of-the-way angle I needed to use it at.
When Line 6 release one of the bean-sized HD pods that have full Variax functionality, I will consider buying into the HD technology. I'm not sure what the current bean-sized HD Pod can handle, but I imagine it is not full featured like the HD500. Not sure what they were thinking in releasing the HD500 so huge as they did. I suppose it is fine for strictly stage use. It is not a good studio toy if your studio has limited space.
Agreed.... The HD500 is just too large and I'm too old to carry it around..... Capabilities are great but they need to be incorporated into a smaller unit such as the bean...... Or smaller.

You can compare the footprint size to the HD500 on their respective Product pages. For the X3 you will have to use the Legacy Products tab at the foot of this page.
The X3 will not store the alternate tunings as defined by the Alt Tuning knob on the JTV. The X3 is directly compatible with earlier Variax models, where the alternate tuning for a guitar model is defined in Workbench and associate with the model selection in the Variax itself. So the X3 will reset the Variax model that is stored with the preset. The variax model, stored in the Variax itself, includes the alternate tuning.
