POD HD500 Flash Memory v2.1 RELEASE NOTES

POD HD500 Flash Memory v2.1 is a FREE firmware update that is highly recommended for all POD HD500 users.

What’s New? POD HD500 2.1 includes five new HD guitar amp models and integration support for L3t, L3m, and L3s speakers over L6 LINK.

  • “Solo 100 Clean”, “Solo 100 Crunch”, and “Solo 100 Overdrive” HD Guitar Amp Models Three new HD guitar amp models based on* the Clean/Crunch and Overdrive channels of the classic, hand-built Soldano® SLO100 Super Lead Overdrive 100-watt head.
  • “Line 6 Doom” and “Line 6 Epic” HD Guitar Amp Models Two new, Line 6 original HD guitar amp models with lots of gain on tap. Line 6 Doom delivers maximum sludge by combining a Marshall® JCM800 preamp and Hiwatt® Custom 100 power amp with some additional tweaks. Line 6 Epic provides sustain for days at virtually any playing dynamic, giving up gobs of distortion with ease.  Play with the Master Volume parameter to experience the true versatility of these amps.
  • StageSource Speaker Support The update also enables POD HD Pro and POD HD500 to integrate with StageSource loudspeakers in revolutionary new ways. You can instantly recall StageSource Smart Speaker modes via POD HD presets, making StageSource and POD HD Pro or HD500 the ultimate integrated FRFR (Full Range Flat Response) guitar system. You can switch from a full-range acoustic sound for the verse to a dialed-in 2 x 12” guitar cabinet for the chorus—with just the press of a footswitch. You can also change to Keyboard mode for dramatic guitar synth soundscapes. Add multiple StageSource speakers via L6 LINK for stereo effects configuration, wet/dry/wet setups, and more.

Good, at least it'll be less crazy around here until the HD300/400s get the next FW update... Can't wait to try out the new amps.

I won't be installing this until next week since I have a major gig on Saturday and don't want any surprises. Let's hope people start installing it and reporting on any bugs or unannounced changes quickly.

The update announcement is missing a statement of how gracefully and patiently the HD 500 owners awaited the update.  From here on, line 6 will update everyone at the same time I think.

Happy for you all (honestly I am).

Though I didnt expect otherwise, I am still a little sad that there was no additional bass amp included.

Also seems a little odd that none of the issues that you guys have been raising were adressed (Aside the amp models which were frankly requisite given the 300/400 update). I really thought, given the delay from the 300/400 update, that they were working on at least one little suprise. Again, of little consequence to a guy of my lesser abilities (aside from the warm glow one gets from having more toys to play with ).

As for other surprises like new amp models - it's already been suggested that the HD500 users might have gotten what they asked for - simultaneous amp/feature releases for all products. Hence, any new amp models that might otherwise have been included in this release are being held back until the next HD300/400 release is available so that everyone gets them at the same time.

I will certainly be maintaining some hope (and I would agree that this approach would make more sense).

That said, there has also been some chatter that not all are expecting any further releases. Speculative I guess. But given the amount of issues / feature requests, and the current age of the HD platform, I would not be surprised if all efforts were not directed toward a new platform. This is mainly why I am a little disappointed. Not that I believe I should have more, but because I would not be suprised if that was the last we get.

I think I could quite happily base all my tones off those three soldano channels. Jeez. They're lovely! Crunch with tube screamer is my kind of rhythm tone. Nice and percussive. I'm a happy chimp!

        Re: V2.1 is available

ok, so the SLOverdrive is the best model on here.  The warm response it has is incredible.  SO WARM.  Maybe not the tightest 5150-esque metal tone (at least from my early attempts at one), but it dominates for leads and all hard rock tones.  VERY responsive to dynamics - a model that truly cleans up when turning down the volume knob.  I easily see this working for Petrucci and Vai tones - just dial in the Vai with a Distortion effect in front for a fatter, rounder breakup tone, and make the Petrucci tone tighter and djentier.

I've also found that while I can't fit delay and reverb when using "dual cab" patches due to the higher DSP constraints, I can get a great sound by using a delay as well as using some E.R. to simulate reverb.  Not as much control as a real reverb, and I usually don't like it, but it works here.  will post clips/patches later.  will make my own thread.

Maybe given how good it sounds, you won't have to dual-cab this one, hence will have more DSP available?

        Re: V2.1 is available

i've always been more of a pure tone than effects guy, and I can still get what I want done with dual cabs.  I've been using E.R. to simulate reverb and can still fit Delay, so that's all I really need.  I've already dialed in enough crazy patches, and I'm not going back and redoing them for the SLO.

I don't think the excellent tone of the SLO can overcome the issues I have with the single cabs.  There's only a handful of combinations that cut if for me:

        1) PhD 2x12 - boost Res. Level, 57 on axis

        2) Hiway 4x12, 57 on/off axis

        3) XXL 4x12, 409 Dyn

    Re: V2.1 is available

With the new high gain amps, I can say that's it's no longer an issue getting an excellent high gain tone with minimal effort. I don't know if it's just my imagination, but my HD500 is sounding even better. Previous patches in previous updates had to be adjusted, this time my previous patches sound even better! I spent most of the last three hours playing the Epic. It really is epic!!

Do they usually post what the bug fixes are? I've been struggling with an issue with the external expressions pedal that Mission Engineering claims is an HD500 issue and would like to know if that was addressed before I update.

            Re: V2.1 is available

The issue is that whatever parameter it controls goes to 100% well before toe down position. Mission supposedly modified the design a year or so ago and offered kits(parallel resistor) to drop the total resistance to between 6K & 7k ohms. The current pedals are using a linear 10k pot. Mission's current response is that its an HD400 & 500 issue that Line 6 needs to fix and the current EP1-L6 model works fine with all other Line 6 products. They are not going to put out a specific model or mod just for the HD400/500.

That sucks when its a $130 pedal with just a pot in it. I have to agree that if it works fine with all other L6 products, Line 6 needs to fix it or put a calibration routine for the external pedal.

If yours works, it would be nice to know what resistance reading you get at toe down.

              Re: V2.1 is available

I've not used the Mission Engineering pedal. I have used it with my Line 6 EX-1, and it works fine for me. Did you buy your pedal before or after Mission altered its design? Or are you saying they actually didn't alter their design? It was my understanding that they revised the design of the EP1-L6 after the HD500 came out. Perhaps I'm mistaken in thinking that, though.

          Re: V2.1 is available

mission did have a hardware fix that addressed some things with their expression pedals and line6 devices... may ask them if you have the pedal with the fix, or need the update.

they generally don't release detailed notes about what was fixed unless it's a huge impact fix... meaning lots of affected users...

you might call and ask... but, be prepared for customer service to get back with you, since they would have to followup with other sources.... they pretty much get the same notes as we do, they just know who to ask for more detail.

Been there done that. I just posted above that Mission's support stance is currently that my pedal(manufactured just about a month or so ago) is working to spec and it's a Line 6 issue.

I'm trying to decide now if I mod a brand new $130 foot pedal with just a pot in it or give up and send it back to Sweetwater.

Meant to put this link to earlier forum post in my earlier post.

Some tweaking and I think the Lead Channel is easily gonna replace the Engl in my set ups.

I was playing for 3 hours, and I can say that for my ears:

-Doom: is just good, I don´t like much, make me remember the sound from the POD XT, sound very simulation and not "real".

-Epic: very good, same quality than the SLO, maybe more metal but in the same line of tone.

-SLO clean: is not for me, have much body the sound, is good but not my style.

-SLO Crunch: Fu$%&/ good, so sad for me that I don´t use crunch sound, but is incredible, very natural, vey real

-SLO Overdrive: My sound, easy to find the rigth eq, much dinamic, much clarity and open sound, all the bite/kick/punch/etc...

Well, just now the POD HD is going to other level, the SLO gave a new place in the competition with the others brands, without doubt now is fighting with the AXE and "hand to hand" when you use the SLO. Grettings and thank for the update

well everyone will find something special to every model, all will depend to the ears and the context for evaluate the model.

Is not bad the Doom model but with the SLO Crunch and Overdrive sounding so real maybe is difficult for me do other evaluation in this moment. Also es important say that I prove the "update" with my amp, so is more in "live" context, I don´t know the behavior going direct to the mixer or the computer. Also is good say that for my ears every models sounded much better with the "tube screamer sim" in front.

This nigth I will continue the evaluating and I will try to do some video the weekend for show the sound with the amp (if somebody is interesting in that).

          Greetings

Also is good say that for my ears every models sounded much better with the "tube screamer sim" in front.

This nigth I will continue the evaluating and I will try to do some video the weekend for show the sound with the amp (if somebody is interesting in that).

            Greetings

i;m gonna hold you to that video

    Re: V2.1 is available

I am disappointed on several levels.

I was really hoping Line6 would add some more features for those of us who use the Acoustic and Archtop models a lot.

I have ins the past raised a feature request for example to allow us to set the "amp" block to be one of the EQ effects so those of us who need a TONE CONTROL but dont want to use the coloration of an

amp,  or amplifier speaker cabinet can do so.  This would have - for example - allowed us to use the big knobs to adjust the tone/eq  of an acoustic model = say a martin, quickly and easily in a live situation.

But no....  yet more amps  with emphasis on distortion.

It would have been far more impressive to have added a Polytone or  Peterson acoustic amp model - for those who at times need that type of amp.

Not everyone wants valves at all times!

Theres not even a Jazz Chorus in there -   even though i'd much rathert have some polytones, peterson, Fishman or AER

For those of us who are going directly into a PA  these things are imporant...

In any case -  operatiig the EQ settings is often quite fiddly.

      Re: V2.1 is available

Wow the Soldano is unbelivable.  After months of tweaking and buying an external Dual 31 Band EQ to help with the tweaking, I can throw away everything I did.  I pull up the Soldano adjust the Res Level and Drive a little and I'm done.  Blows away everything I've done to this point.

Line6 out did themselves on this.  Thank you...

Strange: all the new amps are set to topology I , while high gain amps should be on topology III or IV for example.

Is this a miss by Line 6 ?

I'm not sure it will sound nice in my DT25 if  I don't adjust this. Will try tomorrow.

did you also update the line 6 edit? If you're still using the older line 6 edit version it won't work with the new firmware.

          Re: V2.1 is available

There's no new presets for these amps. You need to go to the amps page and select them from the drop down. If you have newest hd edit they'd be there even if there was a probl;em with your pod. If you want presets for them check custom tone, theres already been a few posted.

What new tones are you referring to exactly? I don't believe there are any new presets as part of this update, just new amp models.

        Re: V2.1 is available

        I agree...

Although I haven't scrolled through every preset since I updated to 2.1, the ones that I have looked through are the same.

But I was hoping there would be some new ones made with the new Amp Models.

P.S. and FYI there is indeed a new Monkey at version 1.61. My previous version was 1.59.

        Re: V2.1 is available

I did the complete reset while upgrading (POD HD Desktop) - holding the Left button while powering on etc - and after upgrade I checked the 1st bank (titled Best of HD or something like that) and I noticed several new presets I never saw before. But I almost never use anything from these factory preset banks except for some acoustic tones to build upon, might as well be my imagination? Can someone else confirm it?

I can post the names of the presets in question when I get home.
