Best way to switch between several guitar during live perf ?

hey guys!
we're gonna play live with some friends and will have to use 4 guitars with different tunings (Drop C, Drop D, Std)
i'm a bit afraid it wouldn't be good for my pod hd500 to unplug and plug another just by turning down the volume...
what do you guys think about this?
Thx
(bonus: a song that will be played by my student)

Assuming that we are only talking about one guitarist per HD500, then the really easy answer is to get a JTV Variax - it has a tuning knob that simulates a set of alternative tunings and you can overwrite the ones you don't like with others that you do want. If you use the VDI connection you can link virtual guitars and tunings to the Patches on the POD - I have patches in a single bank for 12 string and 6 string acoustics, les paul into Marshall Plexi and a Bass. The latter is the JTV with tuning down 12 semitones controlled by the HD into the Bass Amp sim.
Outside of the JTV solution can you connect 4 guitars to a Pod HD500 without having to change cables all the time?
Well there is the Guitar Input and the Aux Input, and the Mic Input which I haven't tried with a guitar but should work with a tweak of the trim control.
That gives 3 and you can control which of those are active using the Input configuration settings on any patch.
But if you are not using the 4CM you have two additional inputs that could also be added to the signal path - the L+R FX Loop Returns. If you place the FX Loop Effect at the start of the Patch and tweak the gain settings it should be possible to have the FX loop inputs feed in as well.
So it is theoretically possible to have 5 guitars all connected to a POS HD500 and all active at the same time and sharing the same Amp and Effects.
The main disadvantage of connecting multiple inputs at the same time and having those inputs active is the accumulated noise; so you will want to mute the unused inputs as you change guitars which I think would start to be a real pain in the back, so personally I would go with the tried and tested method of sharing any Amp between multiple guitars by only using the Guitar input and plugging and unplugging at the Guitar end of the cable.
Actually that last statement is what I did do when I had two guitars with different tunings, but now I have the much simpler to control and incredibly flexible set-up - I have a JTV Variax and VDI cable so I can change guitars and tunings every bar if I want with the press of a pedal.
thanks for your answer,
i dont have any Variax, there will be two guitars on the pod hd500, but for each song i have to change... i just wold like to know what i have to do before unplugging the jack cable to be sure i wont hurt my pod
Grab one of these

Basically run it backwards where you have guitars on A & B and the cable going to the Pod HD guitar input plugged into the IN/OUT on the ABY Switch. That way you can have both guitars plugged in and ready. Just switch guitars hit the A or B button and away you go.
Used to do this a lot back in the day...
Guys are you working in music stores? ![]()
i dont wanna buy anything (and it's problably too late)
i just wanna know if i can unplug guitars without breaking my pod or if it's better to do something special before

I have the "dream rig" and I'm trying to bypass the DT25, so the JTV acoutic sounds go from the POD to the mixer only. No ABY switchboxes have the proprietary line 6 variax data cable. Any suggestions?
Well to do it on the cheap just turn down the power amp, switch guitars, turn the power amp back up.
Don't worry about any damage to the POD HD500 because the signal going into it has not been amplified yet.
It only sounds bad and might be a problem when it reaches your power amp and can damage your speakers
if it gets that far. The only way you might damage the POD HD500 is if you are running something like a micro amp
before it, which would be a bad idea anyways.
There are some guitar cables you can buy that have a cutoff switch built into one end made just for this purpose.
I know you did not want to buy anything, but it's something to consider the next time you need to buy cables.
Here is an example of one:
Really, all i do is put the HD500 in tuner/mute mode and then switch guitars. Can't get any simpler than that.
So, two guitars you said?
The HD500 has 2 guitar inputs 'guitar' and 'aux', they behave the same
Just change the patch and take the other guitar, i do it all the time
Three (even 4!) is possible if you use an extra pre-amp (or two) and set the effectloop in front of everything (for 4 you mix the left or the right effects return according to the wanted guitar)
check it out!
Stay in the mix and in the know.
