There will be no problems particular to the JTV in doing this, but changing the string guage on any guitar can result in a difference in playability. Some people set the guitar up differently (action, neck relief, intonation) with a change in string guage.

Thanks I can do set ups if I need neck adj. ect. Just got it yesterday and am amazed of the quality and the modeling sounds.
I usually change pickup height or something but it is great right out of the box.
Thanks

I'm using 9-gauge strings on my JTV69 and it's working just fine. (Yeah, I know you're asking about the 59, but I figured I'd chime in anyway.)

tried tuning down half step works fine even with models. I think acoustics and 12 string sound better.
I'll have to make a tuning to take it back to standard if I need it.
thanks
