JTV-59 Pickup Switching Issues

We have identified the root cause as the 3 way switch itself. We are taking the necessary steps to repair this issue and we should have replacement parts in by the 1st week of February. In the meantime, if you are experiencing this issue, please respond to this thread so we can create a support ticket for you. We will leave the ticket open and once we have the necessary parts to repair the issue, we will reach out to you via your open support ticket.
As it is currently Friday afternoon, if you do not receive a support ticket today, we will continue issuing support tickets for this issue on Monday after the weekend.

Line6Hugo
Hi Hugo,
I have this issue on my JTV-59. Please issue me a support ticket.
Thanks,
David.
Well, got to hand it to Rich. His first hunch about the root cause was right on the money. Thanks guys.
Hugo,
If a support ticket has not already been open for me, please open a ticket for my JTV-59CSB. Thanks.
Gary
I have had the same problem, however, unlike my friend who also has the problem, mine is intermittent. It comes and goes. Please set up a repair ticket for me.
Please issue a support ticket for the repair of the switch on my JTV-59 CSB. I am unable to register it because there is no pull down for my instrument on the registration page.
I also have the switching problem please put in a service request for me. I asked on the other thread and didn't see an answer, will I be able to take my guitar to the line6 regional repair facility since there is one here in New Orleans.
Thanks
Dennis
Hello. Please open a support ticket for my JTV-59, which has the pickup switching problem. Thanks!
ALBERT
My 59 has this issue...ticket was issued, but didn't realize that it would be scheduled to pick up immediately. I was out of town and could not ship.
@ozbadman, laelamiles, ghoffman, rjv100, steele9999, bristol299, stingbean...
I have issued each of you a support ticket to resolve this pickup switching issue.
@ js_280, you had contacted our service department to set up an RMA before I posted this announcement on our boards. Please communicate with Dwilliams concerning your RMA via your support ticket for how to proceed.

Line6Hugo
Hi Hugo,
I just went to my Support TIcket area and there don't seem to be any tickets issued for me.
Thanks,
David.
Please take a look now. Thanks.

Yep. It's there now.
Thanks Line6Hugo and Line6Miller.
David.
Three cheers for Hugo!!!
i'm from brazil and i'm planning to buy the black JTV59 when i travel to US in two weeks...if it's still in stock :/
if i have problems with my variax, i would have the proper support here in brazil?
and can someone tell me if the next stock of guitars had already have the problem solved?
Many thanks,
Guilherme
The switches in the 59 are not fixed yet. Line 6 is still waiting on the new switches to be made and shipped to them.
I doubt you'll be able to find a jtv59 in any store at the moment as they are 1) still fixing the switches and 2) well behind on shipping to pre-orders to the US, Europe, Canada, Australia, etc.
Ozbadman is correct
Also, and most importantly in your case, if you purchase a product outside of your sales channel (buying a US product, but you take it back to Brazil), you only have a valid warranty in the United States. So, if you bought any product in the US (including the JTV-59) and you have a problem with it in Brazil, you can only get warranty support in the United States. The service centers in Brazil can DENY service because they can see that it was purchased outside their sales channel.
So, if you want a product with a valid warranty in your country, you must purchase it from an authorized dealer in your country. And if it is not available, you will have to wait until they are officially sold in your country by an authorized dealer.

i"m in the exactly same situation.
I have asked this several times, when the new switches are available, will I be able to get my JTV-59 fixed at the local LINE 6 REGIONAL REPAR FACILITY? Instead of shipping it across the country.
At this time, all repairs for the JTV-59 switch problem will be handled by Line 6 directly.
Regards,
Line6Hugo
Thanks, just trying to not have to pack and ship it, will you let us know when the switches are avaiable, I'd rather play it on the Mags than having it sit at line6 waiting on switches to be designed and manufactured.
Dennis
Of course! That's why I created this thread to open tickets for you guys. I will contact you all when we are ready to get the ball rolling.
Best regards,
Line6Hugo
Well the first week of February has come and is almost over. Is there any updated information as to when the parts will be coming in. I am anxiuos to be able to use my new guitar but because of the switching problem the modeling is all over the place. It keeps changing in the middle of playing. While connecting the guitar to the worklbench is a fix for practicing it does not help at all while playing any gigs. I do not tote around a computer with me to gigs.
Having said that, I really think that Line 6 should extend the warranties on these guitars. Since they are basically unuseable they cannot be tested for the full warranty period. The warranty should not start until the guitar is in working order and we have the ability to play it for the full intended warranty period.
I am posting this on the general discussion forum also.
rjv100,
Read the post above yours. After you have opened a support ticket, Line 6 will notify you when the parts are available and when your guitar can be sent back in.
Yesterday Line-6 updated my support ticket to inform me that they have received the new switches and my guitar will be "processed out of the system" (or something like that) in the next few days.
I posted this in the original pickup switch thread, but for some reason that thread has not been showing new messaqges for a couple of days now.
I had sent my 59 to Line-6 two days after receiving it. They have had it for a few weeks now. Progress is being made!
With the second shipment going out, and repairs proceeding on the first batch, I look forward to hearing more comments as people receive them.
Don
Please provide me with a support ticket as I am having the same problem. I have different guitar models switching themselves.
Thanks,
Brian Asbury
basbury,
I have created a support ticket for you concerning the JTV-59 pickup switching issue.
Everyone, I have not yet contacted anyone yet on getting the gutiars back for repair, but please stay tuned this week.
Regards,
Line6Hugo
Thanks for your help. This is my first experience ever having to send a piece of equipment back for repairs.
Brian
Hello all,
If you haven't already, please make sure you've uploaded your receipt (pdf, jpeg photo or scan) to the support ticket that I have issued you. Also register your product so we have the serial number and check your contact information to make sure its all accurate (make sure we have your correct shipping address - NO PO boxes- you must go into your account settings to add/change your shipping address - NOT WITHIN THE SUPPORT TICKET).
Regards,
Line6Hugo
Hi my new JTV 59 has the switch issue and wont change models after about 30 minutes of playing. Please open a ticket for me. What is the turn around on this fix best guess please?
Thanks
Peter
I thought it maight be useful to seee the timeline on my JTV-59 with a switch issue.

1/26/11 - Received email from Line 6 estimating 2 week turnaround to repair switch
2/10/11 - Repair RMA number issued and UPS call tag issued
2/11/11 - UPS picked up JTV-59 for return to Line 6
I will post any updates.
Updates
2/16/11 - Line 6 received my JTV-59
2/22/11 - called Line 6 and was told the switch has been fixed and the guitar sent back by UPS. Gave me the tracking number and it is scheduled to arrive this Friday.
I will post when I receive the guitar to report on the results
I'm kind of Peeved that they scheduled a Pickup from UPS w/o checking with me as to when I was available. Seems to me I should be able to have some say in when and where I have it picked up. All things considered...
Dennis
According to the RMA message I got, It will take up to 4 to 6 weeks to get my Guitar back, let's see 5 months backorder, 2 months received and broken, and 2 1/2 months to get it back. Sounds like $1400.00 (w tax and shipping) well spent. Why can't I bring it to the local Line 6 repair facility? Does Line 6 not trust there own authorized repair facility? Just saying...
Dennis
No response from L6 thinking of trading it in for a made in USA Tele...
I dont think they monitor these threads on the weekend.
bristol299 wrote:

Dennis
Having all repairs done at the Line 6 main facility ensures the repair is done correctly. Also local Line 6 repair facilities would have to be trained to ensure they performed the operation correctly.
At some point they will have to train the repair facilitys, or why have them. I just don't like having to ship a $1400.00 guitar across the country to change a $50.00 switch and Line 6 takes no responsibility for damage during shipping.
Dennis
Hi Dennis,
I understand your points and concerns, but I think you'll find that Line 6 will stand by making the final product right for you. This is a brand new product and I suspect they simply aren't ramped up yet for the necessary training for their repair centers so for right now, the best way to provide service is to ship it back to a single repair facility. All my dealings with Line6 support has made me feel very comfortable that they will sort out your issues, but this product is still very new so they have to do things within the bounds of their current facilities.
While this may be somewhat frustrating, I am quite confident that Line 6 will look after you until you're happy with the result.
David.
bristol,
I understand your concern for getting the guitar repaired by us, but as this is not a widespread problem, we are repairing the handful of units that have this problem directly ourselves.
Getting technical documents, training, and parts to individual service centers that have never seen these guitars before to repair this issue correctly for you takes time. For this reason, we are handling this particular issue ourselves and because it is a small contained group. If you take a look at this thead, there are no more than a dozen unique users who have reported this as a problem that they need fixed.
Regards,
Line6Hugo
My guitar is at Line 6, no update to my ticket, is there away to check on the status of the repair?
Dennis
Bristol299,
Our website was down quite a bit in the last week so it was diffiicult to get back to everyone. Please take a look at your support ticket for the latest updates.

Line6Hugo
Got home and my guitar was on the porch. They scratched the hell out of the back all around the switch, thank them for me. So far it seems ok, they replaced the switch with one with a black tip different from the white tipped one that came originally, send me a white tip. The scratches really peeve me off, but I'm not sending it back again unless it is for ya'll to keep it. I have 7 Variax Guitars with no problems, what's up?

Sorry to hear this... this is exactly the reason I've been recommending to everyone to ask for a brand-new exchange directly from the retailer if possible.
The wait is hell, but I'm hoping that when I finally get mine, I'll be happy with it.
That's why I kept questioning why I couldn't get it fixed by the local Line 6 guy, who I know and trust.

Hello, I am getting ready to order a JTV-59. I was wondering if the swich issues were resolved or wheather I would be better off just getting the JTV-69
haven't seen any switch issues for over 6 months, pretty sure they have been fixed at the factory now. (i know mine was)
Recieved JTV-59 May 5 2011, after ordering from Sweetwater in September 2010, I was hoping after waiting for six months that I would recieve a guitar from the second production run, without the three way switch problems, however, the guitar started malfuctioning almost immediately, and now after only three weeks, it won't change models at all using the three way switch, I love the fit and finish of the guitar, but it needs to be repaired, please tell me how to proceed so that I can get this issue resolved, Please give me instructions in plain english, not exactly a computer geek. thanks in advance.
I got my JTV-59 on May 4, and the switching problem exhibited in about an hour of trying it out. After waiting with the guitar powered off of for 10 - 15 minutes, it would play fine for a few minutes, then mess up again. I called the Line 6 general phone number on the Contact Us link at the bottom of the pages here on the website during their business hours -- keeping in mind that they are on Pacific time, and I'm in Central time. I spoke with their customer support rep, and they issued me a returned material authorization (RMA) and UPS picked it up (after a few tries -- UPS's problem, not L6. Once they got it they changed the switch, but it still gave thefailure mode. They found a cold solder joint and fixed it. They're now checking for that problem in their QA checks. They shipped it back 1 week after they had it, I recieved it last Thursday, ran it through it's paces all evening on Thursday, and used it at my Friday night gig, and it works like a champ. It has the right cream colored tip on it, and the switch is the right size. They were very nice and efficient in the remedy of the problem as far as I'm concerned. It's too bad it had to happen, but it did, and they dealt with it. It took more time d1ck1n' around with UPS than for L6 to find and fix it. I'm extremely pleased with the fit & finish, the sustain, the model sounds, the mag pups, and the setup of my JTV-59 TSB. I ordered it on Oct 10, 2010, and waited 7 months. The pain & anxiety of the wait are definitely fading fast....
Keep the faith,
Dave
Thanks Dave, great information, I'll call tech support number tonight, and post my results, after being so psyched, and then so bummed out, I'm still hoping for the best. This is such a unique instrument, and the creative potential is so great, I just want all these obstacles cleared, so I can get down to making music.
Again thanks
Bob

Hey ,my name is Barry and I just recieved my JTV 59 black (koreian made)serial #W10100350, today from sweetwater,I set up all my favorite sound and models from workbench all was well ,for about an hour then when i was in variax mode using acoustic bank it did the switching thing I 've read about here ,it doesnt do it every time but if this happens when using it live I'm screwed,I have read a few posts from others and not sure if this even matters but others have mentioned but my switch tip is the black one??? I, unlike others, did not wait forever to get it(sweet water just put 'em up last week so I got it in about three days) but am soo looking forward to using it I hate to have to send it back ,but if thats how it must be ,then so be it wondering how I go about it and rough idea of turn around on it?? any info would be helpfull thanks!!
To you and any guys in here with the new switch and new problem. So sorry. We reworked the switches and the switch is solid but there is flux on the switch from the soldering that when it gets a bit warm shorts the switch. We have already reworked the units we are sending out now.
You will need to contact our service dept and get it repaired. It is a pretty easy fix.
Barry --
I believe my JTV-59 was the one they discovered the flux -- solder joint problem. Once L6 had my guitar, they found the problem, fixed and I had it back the next week. I've played 5 gigs with it so far with no problems whatsoever. Love the guitar. Going to change strings on it tonight, and have a gig tomorrow night. I use GHS Boomer 10's on my guitars, so might have to adjust the intonation -- don't know, but will check it for sure. Its intonation is fine right now, but whenever you change brands, even with the same string gauges, you can run into minor intonation adjustments. Will try to attach a pic of it in action last weekend....
Dave
Holy smokes, you make it look like a miniature guitar. ![]()
Damn... those chords must be piece of cake with those hands. ![]()
Anyway, real nice one! Looks awesome.
Thanks! I've been told that before -- I'm 6' 6". I rarely use barre chords -- mainly grab chords. I wrap my thumb over top and can comfortably fret the A string in some positions.... Though one of the best guitar players I know is tiny, and she has short stubby fingers -- but she sure can play. It's all in what you do with what you have ;o)
Dave
Thanks Dave ,for the info,I will be sending it back for repair ,I been dying to play this out live,as there are soo many covers i wanted to play, but with so many alt tunings and such it was never fesable till now ,i been wanting to see others playing it live with different music styles,as most you tube vids are just reviews of the features bsically ,wanted to see it in a band setting,I am sure I'll love it even more when she's up and running with no snags!
Sent my JTV-59, TSB, back to Line 6 the last week in May, they were very nice, sent me a UPS label, told me exactly what I needed to do, brought my guitar to UPS store and shipped it off.
Recieved guitar back on July 1st, tested it and it worked fine for the first two times I used it, then the same damn thing started happening again, the three way switch is not changing the models.
At this point, I am so damned disgusted that I just want the guitar out of my sight. I'm calling my Sweetwater salesman and returning the guitar, and I'll probably buy the roland midi guitar. Great
Ideas only work when proper execution is employed, I might try again in a year or so when all the kinks have been worked out, but for now Line 6 is off my buying list.
are all of the new US 59s coming from the Line 6 Custom shop free of switiching problems? I see few complaints for the 69s, and can't tell if the switch problems with the 59s are the Korean made or US as well. Please advise
Hello I live in France and I just received my JTV-59 after 6 months waiting for it and I have the switch issue... I bought in on Thomann in Germany, what should I do to get it repaired...?
Update on my return and repair....

Question: Is it just not possible to fit a properly sized pickup selector switch to the body? I'm curious why this oversight is acceptable when Line 6 has said on the forums that they raised the prices specifically because they were not willing to cut corners on quality. Huh?! The mismatched switch seems like a cut corner to me.What do you guys think?
They are absolutely cutting corners and taking shortcuts.
Someone claimed that they contacted Line 6 and got them to send a correctly sized washer. You could try that.
As I mentioned before, I have taken it on myself to do Line 6's QC for them for my own guitar. The process is like this:
1. Order guitar last year.
2. Wait several months for guitar to be delivered.
3. Run QC check on guitar.
4. If guitar fails QC check, send it back to the retailer for an exchange. IMPORTANT: Do NOT send it back to Line 6, use your retailer's return option.
5. Go to step 2.
So far I've had to do this about 3 times. I am hoping I finally get a brand new guitar that has everything right from Line 6, including correctly-matched switch.
Anyone have any idea as to what percentage of JTV-59 (korean) have issues? Is it with all of them made before a certain date (or serial)? If I buy one that just came into stock what are the chances it'll have issues. Hard to tell because not many working JTV users post.
I've been trying to write to line 6 to see if they can tell me from the serial (W101200187) if it's already had the switch replaced and if the flux has also been checked. It must be possible to provide this info as I'm sure they keep records of service and repairs. They told me if it's just come into stock its probably ok, but I was hoping with the serial they could tell for sure.I'd love to buy it but It seems pretty likely I'll end up sending it back within the first day.
Just brought my JTV-59. I've played it less that two hours and the switch has gone kapput. I've updated the firmware and I'm charging the battery just to make sure its not me. Can I contact my local service centre directly or do I have to have a ticket issued here?
Yup Charged the battery and it worked for a few minutes before it began changing between models at random or not switching at all. I'm going to need a ticket please.
How come my JTV59, received in September 2011, still has the same switching problems? I thought Line 6 claimed they were on top of this.
Hi there,
I'd just like to report my JTV 59 switch problem. I have used this guitar since I bought it a couple of months ago. It played up once. The modelled sounds changed but the 3 way had no effect. But last saturday night at a very warm gig, it played up within 5 minutes. The 3 way wouldn't change the sounds and I couldn't access sounds at postion 2 and 4.
I phoned line 6 UK and they said there was no known fault with the switches. I told it that it was all over the forums but he advised me to return it to the dealer and turn around time is very quick. (5-10 days)
I'm in Kent in the UK and my supplying dealer is in Brighton, which is a pain.
Otherwise it's a great guitar.
Received my JTV-59 yesterday after a 13 month wait (I'm in Canada). I can't seem to access models 2 and 4 by pressing the alt-tuning knob. The 3-way switch seems to be working ok but pressing the alt-tuning knob doesn't semm to be doing anything. Serial no is W101200237.
try lifting the knob up the shaft a bit. It's probably bottoming out on the guitar.
That was indeed the problem. Thank you for your help.

Received JTV59 CSB in good condition, the switch works normal, so i had too update the firmware on the pod x3 live and i thought i had to update the firmware on the guitar, but the latest firmware was already on the guitar.could it be possible that my CBS is from the new shippment without switch issue? the serial no. W11081157. i hope that i don´t get the switch issue. the sound is o.k. the intonation is o.k. too, but the saddle is for my setup to high, so i´ve too change them and want to change the pickups to seymour duncan alinco pro APH II, (but the sound of the pickup is good), but i need a little more crispy bit.the finish is a little too red for my opinion but what shells (i´d like original the TSB but it´s not avaiable). Sorry for my english, i´m from austria. Palm muting is not as bad as i thought. negative on the guitar: it looks cheap and feeling is cheap, the countersinks is ugly.the neck is thicker than on my expensive gibson les paul slash signature.
greetings from austria
hi, please issue me a support ticket to get my JTV-59 s/n W11101504 3-way switch repaired,
thanks!
Jeff
Please issue me a support ticket as well. Switch is funky on my '59. S/N W110400673.
Thanks.
Hi i seem to have an issue with my JTV-59, the switch is crackling its serial is: W110400196 can a new switch be sent to me?
cant live without the guitar its my main tool..
i suggest contacting line6 directly: http://line6.com/company/contact/
Hi the realZap thanks for that, contacted them this morning and......
i need to return my guitar, 14 days + to replace the switch.... WHAT.... its a switch, a 10 min job at best
they can send me a switch but it voids the guarantee if i replace it.......just great
i cant be without my guitar for 14 days + its now my main instrument, yeah i have spares but they dont have all the line 6 goodness in them.....
:-(
:-(
:-(
Unfortunately my JTV-59 TSB with the SN W11100728 also have the issue with the toggle switch im combination with the neck PU only.
Is my understanding right that even after two years repair is done exclusively by Line6?
If from the technical point of view a guitar tech also could replace the toggle switch, I would prefer to get the switch and the replacement done by an local guitar tech even when this voids the guarantee.
Is my understanding right that I have to contact Line6 directly via http://line6.com/company/contact/ to get the switch?
Thanking you in anticipation
Dieter from Siegburg, Germany
I would also open a support ticket to deal directly with Line 6. Under the Support tab at the top of this page, select Contact Technical Support. Then select the same thing again on the subsequent display.
Thanks. I will follow your advice.
