Using the POD HD500 for effects only

When performing live, I use the HD 500 for effects only, in the FX loop of my Carvin V3. In this setting, should I use the AUX input for those patches?

Nah, man - just the regular inputs should be fine.

You should check out something called the "four cable method" though.  Guitar -> Pod (via guitar in) -> pod FX out -> front of amp -> amp fx out -> pod FX in -> Pod output -> amp FX return

You set up the pod so that the effects chain is:

pre effects -> FX Loop block -> post effects

The four cable method (4CM) allows you to put all your effects where you really want, and the FX Loop block in the pod has setting for incoming and outgoing levels.  You can use things like distortion pedals in front of the amp to great effect this way.

Also, nice to see a fellow Carvinite.

As sheater5 said, using the regular inputs is fine and the 4CM is definitely the way to go. I wanted to add that if you're using the POD for effects only with the 4CM, turning off the amp sim by disabling it completely and putting the FX loop after the mixer has given me the best results because it lets the full dynamic range of my guitar to come through and makes the effects more dynamic sounding as well. I find that it eliminates the need to add EQ's to boost the signal and eliminates tone suck at the same time. I have been using my HD500 with this set up going into a Blackstar HT Stage 60 and a Legacy for months now and I am blown away at how good it sounds everytime I fire it up. Give it a try and you'll see what I mean.
