Studio GX recording level Windows 7

Hi.

I don't know how to lower the level of incoming signal. While I'm recording my guitar's body pickup produces so high level of signal that I get digital distortion on every track. To eliminate that I should lower the incoming level, GX doesn't have any gain level knob. Before I bought it I thought that there is a fader in GX driver software, whith which I can set right of incoming signal level. I have tried everything and didn't find any possibility to set this. I'm using Pod Farm as a VST plugin in Ableton. While I'm recording I hear the simulated sound from pod farm, bu the recorded signal is clean guitar. I'd like it to stay that way. There's always a possibility to change the sound by changing pressets in Pod Farm VST plugin. Please help.

    Hi,

Not sure if you have tried this and still get distortion but if you go into the vst of Pod Farm, you can go to the knob up the far top left and this turns down the input.

    God Bless,

    David

I see what you are meaning.

I think an impedance matching device will be the thing to help with this. Something to bring down 'hot' pickups to normal guitar pickup levels. I haven't been able to see any for this, but someone would I think be manufacturing them. I know it doesn't help, but the ux2 has a 2nd guitar input for hot pickups. Just mentioned it because the price for a transforming device might be a bit - depends on what is out there. Some transforming devices are quite cheap, but some are hundreds etc. Unfortunately I can't seem to find any online for this. I'll have another look though.

        God Bless,

        David

              Hi again,

I misunderstood what you were meaning. Sorry about that I was thinking you were meaning lowering the input before it gets into the computer.

So, not sure. The gx is doing the analogue to digital converting, so if the signal is ok going into the gx (i.e. not too strong for the gx's input), it should stay ok through to pod farm. If the pickup is causing it, I think its likely that it is too strong for the gx and so it is converting it with the too hot signal, and outputting a digitaly distorted sound that the levels in the computer won't change. It could turn the volume down, but the distorted sound would still be there.

If it isn't the pickup, then it could be converting cleanly and then for some reason distort in the computer, but if the pickup's level is ok, then it should be ok with the computer's levels all at 100%. I use my ux2 and have the input at 100. If turning the pod farm input level down doesn't help it, I think it probably needs something to lower the level before the signal goes into the gx.

              God Bless,

              David

              P.S.  Merry Christmas

If you are looking to impedance match and/or attenuate signal into the GX you could look into a DI box with a pad switch.  LiveWire, Rolls & ART all make some very useable units that are in the $20-$30 range.  Most DI's use XLR for the output, so you might need to add to your cable selection.

                Just a thought.

Can you record the unprocessed signal from UX and post a clip and possible a screenshot of the waveform in your DAW?

I´ve had the same problem with one of my guitars. On my Jackson SL1 the pickup (TB-4) was setup too high so the recorded clean DI track clipped a little bit.

I have an old Line 6 DI Port which has a PAD button when I´m using it the signal was way to low.I think the PAD button is designed to use with active pickups (EMGs) or very high output passive pickups.I´ve solved the problem by lowering the pickup height of the TB-4 so it doesn´t clip anymore.

        Hope this helps.
