Hey guys,

Apologies if this topic has already been brought up, but I can't seem to find info on this specific question.

I have Pod Farm 2 which was included when I bought my Pod X3 Live two years ago, and at the moment I'm using it within Garageband. Everything is authorized and in use. So I'm doing some mixing at the moment, and I just want to experiment with tones on an already recorded dry guitar signal. The problem is, I can only do this when my Pod X3 Live is connected to the computer. If I disconnect it while Pod Farm is running within Garageband, I get a message saying that Pod Farm 2 is not authorized - so I understand that the authorization key must lie in the Pod X3 Live itself.

I was wondering if there is any way to authorise and use Pod Farm 2 when on the computer, without having to connect any hardware? It would be so much more convienient that way as I can then headphone mix while on the go (I don't want to be carrying a Pod X3 Live around everywhere).

You will not be able to use your current Pod Farm 2 license without the X3 connected. That is how Line 6 handled its licensing at the time - it was hardware based. Since the Pod Farm software is publicly available for download by anyone, the software required authorized hardware in order to operate. You can't get around this.

Since then Line 6 has moved to hardware independent licensing for Pod Farm 2.5. If you want to purchase a new license you will be able to use it without your X3 connected. But it will still require an ASIO audio interface device to be connected. There are very small and relatively inexpensive audio interface devices that will qualify, meaning you could have the portability you want.

The best deal might be to buy the Line 6 Pod Studio GX:

This highly portable audio interface comes with a hardware independent Pod Farm 2.5 license. You can upgrade the basic license to Pod Farm Platinum if you wish; that's what your X3L has.

  I think I may already be using Pod Farm Platinum as I've got 78 guitar amps, Dual Tone, 6 mic preamps etc. that Pod Farm Platinum features, although I can't really tell, it is just labelled as Pod Farm 2.5.

    The X3 came fully loaded, so you have the equivalent of Platinum with the X3 being the dongle.
    
    Also, I think Silverhead meant to say the GX comes with a hardware Dependant (not independent) license.
    
    The only hardware independent license currently available is POD Farm for Computer.

      That's a lot clearer to me now. Is there any portable device by Line 6 that could be used as a dongle?
      I don't suppose I could access my own licence, and somehow transfer/copy my licence (code?) onto a small portable USB device simply for editing and mixing, not recording?
      I'm in love with the software, but previously I used the X3L straight into Garageband via USB cable, going through the patches on the pedalboard itself, which yields the same results.
      Navigating the software with a mouse would be a hell of a lot more convienient, its just a bit awkward when I've put the guitar away, I'm ready to mix but I need to leave the X3L plugged in and turned on in order to edit the signal.

You cannot transfer a license which comes bundled with the hardware.
The smallest device is the POD Studio GX Silverhead sited. It comes with POD Farm 2.5 (bundled the the GX) but you won't have all the Models as the X3. You could purchase Add-ons though.

Or you could out right purchase POD Farm 2.5 Platinum for Computer (not i-Lok) which does not require a dongle and also works with most USB ASIO interfaces. It also has a 30 day money back (which i-Lok version does not). But of course that is more $$$ also.

  Ah ok. Well thanks again for the help! I have POD Farm Platinum, I got it free with the X3L. Are there any other USB interfaces you would recommend of a portable size that would work with POD Farm? Line 6 or not. Just exploring my options!

    There are many 'portable' audio interfaces available - look for those powered by USB at Sweetwater (or other online retailers). Note that you will be setting this AI as your sound device for input and output in your DAW, and plugging headphones into it, not in to your computer's headphone jack.
    
    If you purchase PodFarm 2.5 (computer) you will not need an external audio interface at all when accessing your DAW and PodFarm plug-in, your computer's internal soundcard will serve that purpose.

The only thing that comes to mind for portable off the top of my head is the GX or this.
