How to use Volume pedal HD500

Hello all,

 

I am a X3Live user and have up graded to hd500.

 

When using the x3live, when I switch between patches the volume output allways is set to where the physicall volume pedal is set on the board.

 

On the hd500, when I switch from one patch to another it always goes back to my last setting.

 

In other words, when I switch from patch to patch the volume allways goes back to where I last set that patch. I want it to go to where I have the physical pedal set on the board.

 

So my question is this.

 

When switching from patch to patch how do I set the patch to go to where the physical voume pedal is on the board and not to the preset or last setting?

    I don't think you can change that behaviour - the HD500 uses the saved position (not the current position) of the volume pedal each time a preset is loaded.

      Thanks for the quick reply.

       

      If your answer is correct, then Line6 has went backwards in this regard because, like I said, on the x3live when you switch from patch to patch the volume pedal on the board and where it is set physically, determines the over all output volume of the unit.

       

      eg: if the pedal is at toe position the volume is full and if it is set to heel it is muted no matter which patch you are on.

       

      Maybe I am just missing something when I program a patch, but for me and the way I use it, this will be a major concern.

       

      Here is how I program X3Live for stage use or live performance.

       

      Channel 1 or song 1

       

      Patch A - Clean

      Patch B - Dirty

      Patch C - Chunk

      Patch D - Lead

       

      and so on....

        There are many ways in which the HD500 is different from the X3L - this is one of them.  Whether that is good or bad depends on how you use the VOL pedal, I guess. For you it's a step back, but others will prefer having a predictable volume level when recalling a preset, regardless of the current pedal position.

         

        In the HD500 the VOL pedal may or may not be assigned to the preset at all, and if it is it may not be controlling Volume. In the X3L it is part of every patch and is always on, although it can be assigned to control something other than the volume. Also, in both the HD500 and the X3L you can assign min/max levels for the pedal. So it is not quite true that in the X3L the VOL pedal will always mute the sound when set to heel - it might be controlling some other parameter, or it might set the volume level to some no-zero min level assigned for that patch.

         

        It's just a matter of getting used to the different implementations and their respective characteristics. For the situation you describe above (A, B, C, and D patches within a bank) I suggest the best thing would be to save each patch in the Bank with the same VOL level. It's predictable so you can learn to work with it.

          IMHO it is great that you can set the expression pedal to adjust jsut about anything you set it to adjust, but when it is set to VOLUME that is exactly what it should adjust, the overall or Master Volume of the unitn at least!!

           

          If Line6 missed this, I believe it to be a big concern and should be addressed by them.

            Well like Silverhead said some people (like me) prefer a "predictable" volume level when recalling a preset. I surely don't want volume to stay maxed out from the ending of a loud song and still be that loud when the next song on my setlist is a ballad. I tend to use one preset per song so this setup works best for me.  And there you have it... 2 different opinions... just to show "You (Line 6) can't please all of the people all of the time!"

              The best way to predict where the volume of the unit will be when you switch patches would be to look down at the VOLUME PEDAL and see where it is set to physically and not have to rely on remembering where you programmed it to!!

                I really don't see any difference between the saved setting of the Volume Pedal in a preset and the saved settings of other parameters that have physical counterparts, like the Drive knob, the Bass/Tone/Treble settings, etc.....and in this context especially the Amp Volume knob.

                 

                I don't think the HD500 should ignore any of these saved settings when recalling a preset, and simply set the values to mirror the physical knob positions at the moment that you recall a preset.  Or is there something special about the Volume Pedal that makes it different from these other parameters?

                  Hey Silverhead, you misunderstand. Not the Amp Volume Knob, the Global Volume of the entire unit OR Master Volume. You should be able to set the physical volume pedal to control the global volume OR Master Volume of the entire unit just like you could with the X3LIVE. And yes there is something special about the volume pedal, like I stated above you should be able to Control the global volume of the unit just like you could with the X3LIVE. A Volume pedal should be able to control the Master Volume imho?

                    Actually, I think you misunderstand. The Volume pedal on the X3 Live does not control the device Master Volume. It controls the VOL FX where it is positioned in the signal chain, PRE or POST. That's what the HD500 does too. The difference is, in the X3L the VOL FX is always present in the preset; in the HD500 it is not necessarily present.

                     

                    I'm not disagreeing with you - I think it could be useful to have a pedal that controls the device Master Volume. It's just that neither the X3L nor the HD500 provide it.

                      that's just asking for trouble... because the master doesn't save with the preset etc... lots of blown speakers and bleeding eardrums from one patch to the next....

                       

                      if your patchs have been relatively leveled between them you shouldn't need to touch the master volume often at all.

                      O.k.  ...so how can you set the volume pedal to control volume fx to always be present in the hd500 then?

                        You have to include it in every patch. There is no global setting for this. You need to do this manually in every patch, or set up a template patch that includes the VOL FX and copy that patch to a new location as a starting point every time you create a new patch.

                      Yes you are right, I am confusing Master volume with the channel volume. But my point is that when using the x3live it was very usful to be on say bank 1 a, then use the volume pedal to volume down, then switch to bank 1 b and use the volume pedal to volume up as needed. On the HD500 you cant do this because when you switch from bank 1 a to bank 1 b the volume goes to your saved position and not to where the volume pedal is set. So in a live setting you will be on stage and volUme down 1 a then when you switch to 1 b your volume will jump to who knows where!

                        This is something that would come with difficulties with the HD500 setup.  If what you want is a dedicated, post-effects master volume, you may be better suited by simply buying a volume pedal and placing it after the Pod in your setup.  Then it will not be altered by changing patches.  The onboard pedal could then be applied to other settings within the signal chain (wah, delay feedback, etc). 

                         

                        Should Line 6 implement this as an option in a future firmware?  I dunno, it's not useful to me.  Drop them a line and let them know it would be useful to you.

                        it will only do that until you leave the master volume alone... go and call up and set your patches where you want them and re-save....

                        then the master volume raises and lowers all tones equally... meaning you would set it for the venue/situation and not fuss with it much.
