I need to get this recording stuff straightened out

Okay I noticed that when I go into Reaper and look at Audio Device Settings, if I choose EMU for my driver, then I cannot go into Line 6 Audio and Midi Devices and adjust the record level send and expect it to do anything cuz it doesn't. If I choose HD Pro as my driver then the record level slider in Audio and Midi Devices works to set my level on my track. Problem is I'm getting some type of distortion. If I choose EMU and then set input first to be 5 SPDIF/LR and input last as 6 SPDIF/LR then I get good recordings with no distortion and I get a normal looking wave pattern (see screenshot).

But if I set audio device driver to HD Pro and then first input to be input 1 and last input to be input 2 I do not get a normal looking wave pattern (see screenshot). Plus I can hear obvious distortion. Although the record send slider works if the device driver is set this way.

So can anyone shed some light on all this? It's not my cup of tea really as I don't know much about recording. I'm mainly a guitar player.

Is there a way to get normal looking wave patterns with no distortion and to be able to still set the record send slider the way I want?

I'll try to attach some screenshots.
