Extremely wimpy headphone volume on my HD300

I first tried my headphones ($120 Sony) on my HD300 (latest firmware) w/ my two American Strats.  I set the small volume knob at the back to the max and the channel volume max. Even so, the volume level is very low on most factory patches.  I set everything to "studio."  At first, I thought my headphones were faulty; they are fine.  On my Zoom G3 & Boss ME-70, I get nice volume with the same guitars through headphones. Am I missing something???

    It seems like most presets are set to a very low volume.  When I changed the amp models, the volume was high. 

     

    Another thing is all the amp models sound VERY bright through the headphones.  I had to set the treble knob to 8-9 o'clock to tame the highs.

      Just to let you know... that's kind of been my experience too. Playing through powered monitors is weird too... I have to have the "Master" volume (on the HD 500 unit) at least past 12 o'clock (for me) to sound decent or to get a recordable level.

       

      But playing through and amp (MosValve, Crate Powerblock, Fender Stage 112) is totally different. It seem any volume sounds great... it's just a matter of how loud I want it to be.

        Do your powered monitors not have their own volume control?

         

        I have a pair of Rokit 5s in my little home studio. I use my HD500 as audio interface with my laptop, and have set the volume control on the 5s so my DAW plays at a sensible volume (to be honest, I don't actually know if/how I can set the volume of USB audio - I've never tried it, but I suspect ASIO sets its own levels). Then I set the master volume on the HD500 so my guitar sits nice in the mix when I'm live monitoring.

         

        Roughly, the way it is set up now, I have master volume at around 12o'clock when I'm recording (to match my DAW), but that leaves enough room to get loud if I've got the house to myself. I don't really see why having it up past 12 would be a problem.

        Also, are you using the correct settings for your monitors? You need a different setup for amps and monitors as they expect hi-z and lo-z inputs respectively; this means if you're using the same setup for both, you'll always get a lower level from your monitors.

    The headphones issue (now that you seem to have sussed the volume problem) might be to do with impedance. The PODs are designed for relatively high impedance headphones, and I know impedance can affect tone; I just can't remember which way the relationship works.
