Tone Killing Output Options for Combo Front & Stack Front...HD500

When using the Output Options Mode for Combo Front & Stack Front, there are 3 additional options...Focus, Lows, Highs. The factory default setting for the lows is -49, Highs -50. These 2 settings absolutely kill the low and high tone! I've now set both low and high to "flat"...sounds good now. I use the combo front option, using the 1/4" output jack to various combo amps I own. Discovered it when selecting the tuner and it happened to have the "bypass" option 2 selected (default from the factory). I've seen very little discussion about this tone killing default factory setting. The other option, Focus, varies the mid frequency from 100hz-2.5khz. Default is 570Hz. Book says it "increases the overall midrange". Playing with that also affects the mid tone quite a bit...so far I'm leaving it at 570hz. This Focus control may be good for optimizing the mid tone when using various combo amps.
When you're using the POD in front of your amp, are you using the POD's amp modeling, or are you just using effects? If you're just using effects, you don't want to use these output modes. You want to use studio direct. The tone correction in the front modes is meant to give people a way to flatten out their amp's response a bit.
Thanks for the quick response response and recommendations Phil. When using an external combo amp, I use HD500 for effects only, and use the combo front output option, using 1/4" mono output. When not using an external combo amp, I use an HD500 amp model, HD500 effects, and use studio direct output option, using XLR direct to the board. That seems to jive with Advanced guide page 2-8, output options. Your answer seems opposite of the directions on page 2-8. I'm a bit confused now.
That section of the Advanced Guide assumes that you are going to be using the HD500 for amp modeling as well. For effects only, you don't need any tone correction. You want the pure, unadulterated tone coming from the effects.
Wow...I read the entire section, Output Options, and see nothing that would have me "assume" I'm using amp modeling as well. Knob 1, Output mode descriptions are pretty clear to me. I'm still thinking these 3 settings (especially the 2 lows-highs settings...knobs 2 & 4) are "tone killers" for people using combo front/stack front output options because they are using external amps, and have read that section and understand it as I do.
