Recently got a PODxt. Custom tones off line6 site are very muddy and fuzzy :(

I just got myself a PODxt off eBay and have made some of my own hi-gain tones but some can be quite muddy and compressed when the gain isn't even that high. But when I get some off the Customtone site, they are very high gain and fuzzy and muddy. It surely can't be like that for all the people who downloaded it so what am I doing wrong?

What are you pluging the Pod into? Sounds like you may have not set the "What are you connected to?" option correctly. It's in the manual. If you use the wrong mode it can sound awful. Straight into a recording system/studio monitors use "Studio Direct".

If you're going into an amp you will need to try one of the amp modes. Also the amp needs to be set to be as neutral as possible in this scenario, probably with 12 o'clock settings for Bass/Mid/Treble, and zero for presence.

Also the problem with downloaded tones are numerous. What guitar was used? What settings on that guitar were used? What amp was used? What were the settings on the amp? How loud was the amp (very important this one)? etc.

  I'm using it through headphones about 90% of the time and the manual says it should have changed accordingly once plugged in and I checked and it had. I've got a set of Yamaha RH-5Ma's.
  
  Yeah I understand that the guitar and pickup will make a difference but its so vast that its lead me to believe I'm not doing something right :/

    always 100% of the time regard custom tones as a starting point...
    the creator could have used a PA, a guitar amp, headphones..... could have been playing at gig levels, bedroom levels...
    could have 500$ pickups in a 20$ sears guitar... .etc...
    you just never know...

    Well I can't hear what you hear obviously, but also consider that these tones were probably not made on headphones, so that's yet another factor. However there may be some fault, as you what you describe doesn't sound right.
    
    It may be worth re-flashing the firmware in the PODxt to make sure you're up to date and also to fix an anomolies. However, be aware that if you have any of the optional model packs (e.g. Metal Shop, Collectors Classics etc.), and the previous owner hasn't 'gifted' them to you from his account to your account then you will lose the ability to use them and you would then have to purchase them.
    
    If you have any patches you like make sure to save them using GearBox before reflashing the Pod.

      This one came with the Metal Shop pack installed which I already purchased for my old Toneport GX so that shouldnt be a problem. Can I use it on more than once device?
      
      Also, how do I re-flash the firmware?

        as long as you paid for the pack on your account you can use it on up to 4 devices.

        just use monkey, when you select the device there should be a reinstall latest button.

        I've done all the above but still not getting any changes. For example, on the Master of Puppet factory preset, when I palm mute, it sounds like its clipping when its not. On most high gain tones, I can only get a certain amount of drive before it gets muddy and even then, it isnt that much. I have a Seymour Duncan Invader if that helps so its not a cheap pickup or anything.

Yeah, I don't put too much stock into the custom tones or the presets.

If it sounds like it's clipping, it probably is. You might be coming in too hot, so you could be clipping the input

Does rolling back the volume a bit on your guitar help? (I know, it doesn't seem righ to do that on high gain tones)

Also try the tube overdrive before a high gain model, keeping the gain dailed down on both.

Line6 does recommend high impedance headphones, although many don't have problems with lower impedance, some do describe them as sounding harsh.

  I checked that and it doesnt say it is clipping.
  
  Turning the volume pot down was actually a very good suggestion! It's cleaned up the sound a fair bit. Does this mean I should invest in some lower gain pickups? WIll probably give a more toned sound.

The clip indicator on the PODxt is only the internal digital clipping.

You can clip the input coming in too hot without setting off the clip indicator.

I have no recomendations on headphones. The only studio headphones I have owned are a set of Sony MDR 7506 which are also low impedance and I have had no issues, and I personally don't think that is the isuue, but if you can loan another set to try...

When I first got my PODxt it took me a while to tame the fizz (that used to be a four letter word around here!!), so I think as you spend more time with it you'll get it dialed in.

  Ah I see, ok. My friend is doing sound production at Uni so I'll see if he has any that I can try.
  
  I think I am now finally getting somewhere. The volume tip really helped. Yeah, I guess its just playing around and stuff. I'm still learning how the device works as well haha. Thanks for your help man!

        YES!! You have what I like to call the MAGIC Bean, for i have found many magic inside!! (true story)
        
        I came from analog tape recording, (I won't even get into loss from bouncing trax) to the PODxt, and I would swear to anybody at the time this burgundy Bean was pure Magic!!
