Spider Valve 112 Crunch Blue vs. Metal Blue Sound

Hi all,

Please note I am not an expert in this topic...  I have a Spider Valve 112 combo.  Although I am generally satisfied with the amp, I would like to get a sound with a gain and sustain between the Crunch and Metal blue.  For my style I would like more gain (distortion) in the crunch blue mode.  I like the way the sound cleans when I turn down the guitar volume.  At the other hand, I like the tone and gain of the metal blue mode but the sound does not clean enough when I turn down the guitar volume...

Before I invest in another amp, I have seen some discussions around improving the tone by changing tubes and the speaker.  Is this an option?  Any suggestion?  I have a EVH Wolfgang...

Thanks!
