POD X3 volume knobs not working

I just purchased an X3 (not "Live") on eBay, and I noticed a problem right out of the box.  I plugged in a guitar and headphones as soon as I unpacked the unit, and the volume knobs apear to be dead.  Tone-wise it sounds fine, but I tried to turn down the Master Volume to make it listenable, and no change whatsoever.  Tone Volume seems dead as well.  Okay, I'll admit that I haven't worked with this X3 unit long enough to have the hang of it yet (it's certainly more complex than my old POD Pro), but from what I can tell the TONE VOLUME knob and MASTER VOLUME knob are both simply not functioning at all. The unit appears to be stuck at max volume on each, and turning either knob has no affect at all on the volume. Upon further review, it is the same whether I'm using headphones or if I'm using the 1/4" out(s) to go to a mixing console, and nothing I do seems to fix this. I don't see anything in the manual, the FAQ's, or user forums about this problem. I have installed Line 6 Monkey on my computer and updated everything that I can find to update (firmware, etc.).  No change.  Like I said, I'm not very familiar with the unit yet, but I would think that plugging in a guitar and headphones, dialing up a preset, and adjusting the Master Volume knob would be all you would need to do to at least get rolling with the unit, but when I do that the unit appears to be operating at maximum volume through the headphones, and the volume controls have no affect. Same with plugging direct to a mixer, although I can obviously control the POD volume with the mixer channel slider(s). I've owned both an original POD as well as a POD pro (which I still own and love), and plugging in a guitar and headphones and selecing a preset is all it takes to start rocking with those (and the Master Volume works appropriately). The X3 appears to be functioning normally otherwise (it sounds great and seems to work correctly other than being too loud with phones), but those volume knobs appear to be dead. Considering that one main reason I purchased this unit was to have a nice, compact practice amp to use with headphones (with the other primary reason being recording), having the volume control working properly for taming the phones is a big deal. Any ideas for rectifying this? Am I doing something wrong? Like I said I've done every factory reset and update that I can find to do, and I've tried to find a setting on the unit that might be the culprit, but nothing I do helps.  Is the unit stuck in some certain mode that I'm not familiar with that I just need to change?  Hopefully that's the case and I just haven't found it yet.  Any help would be appreciated!!!

Thanks in advance,

Paul

    Paul,

You can try re-installing the flash memory with the POD X3 in safe mode: Hold 'RIGHT' on the directional pad while powering up the POD X3. If the unit is still exhibiting the problem after re-installing the flash memory in this mode, you will need to take it to an authorized service center for repair:

I did everything the above user did including flashing from safe mode and no luck either! I do notice the clip light will go out if I turn the master volume down and come on if I turn it up but it does NOTHING for the sound output. It neither turns the volume up or down on any settings or tones! It used to work. Now it is MAXED all the way up so the sound is always distorted or overdriven. What should I do? Also I see no LED showing the master volume nor does it change screens when I move the master knob. HELP!

No problems..... I have "THE BEST" which is the BOSS GT-10 and it works even after over three years! Yet my piece of JUNK X3 pro is not and then to have the help center be just a bunch of idiots whom have working units and can offer no service help is as I say and I have many friends saying is a complete JOKE! Come on children this is suppose to be a professional company that sells expensive gear and offers little or NO SUPPORT! I really could care a less what you idiots say on this so-called help forum as you have no clue about anything unless it works. IT IS WHEN THE SERVICE CENTER TOLD ME ALL ABOUT LINE 6 and then WARNED ME ABOUT THEM! If my unit worked as it is suppose to I would be on here saying something completely different! Hey if any of you blow mouths are willing to REFUND ME I am more than willing to ship my unit to you. I have contacted the BBB and have submitted everything they should need to help. I sure hope that you shall have the famous LINE 6 dissappearing master volume syndrom. Ha Ha!

Re: POD X3 volume knobs not working

Check your OUTPUT to see if it is sending the volume to another source. My unit had sent the master volume to the mixer side of my unit so it would not work on the amp side. I pressed the OUTPUT button in for 3 seconds and the led showed me what the volumes were controlling. I turned the lower right knob below the led until it said ALL and now it works! VERY EASY FIX yet nobody here could explain.

Perhaps we're more used to helping people fix things that aren't already clearly described in the manual...... Check under MSTVOL....Most people read it before coming here......

Re: POD X3 volume knobs not working

I did not receive a manual in my box! It was just not there although I did receive two pamphlets for the mods. Yes, I should have read it but the offers of help from so -called support NEVER thought to mention it. I have to say that you were right and I WAS WRONG, VERY WRONG! Had I looked I would have saved myself alot of frustration. I did pick up my unit at the service center and was told after TWO WEEKS they had not even looked at it. According to them they are WAITING to receive certification from Line 6 for their technician. He is not qualified to do the work yet. I was not told this until yesterday. I explained my frustration and told the manager that had the technician took the time to look at my unit he could have fixed it in less than 15 seconds and I would have been more than willing to pay. Suddenly he looked a little upset but oh well instead I did it and saved myself more lost time. I also should tell you that my unit automatically changed the settings once I plugged in my mixer without NOTIFYING me of the changes. This should not happen without my consent or the unit should have allowed the MV to control ALL. I shall now go and IMMEDIATELY as I am notifyiong everyone of my STUPIDITY! Please accept my appologies! Thanx, Dave

Re: POD X3 volume knobs not working

I'm very glad you got things worked out. Thanks for your apology, and I offer mine as well for being harsh with you. In retrospect I should have thought of the Mstvol setting as the culprit, but to be honest I made the mistake of getting caught up in the emotional and negative tone of our exchange, and I guess I wasn't thinking too clearly.

Anyways, good luck with your X3. It really is an excellent device, in my opinion, but it is complicated and takes a bit of a learning curve. If you need to consult this forum again, please do. But please try to do a little more investigation yourself first, and try to describe your problem less emotionally. We tend to respond better that way, too.

          Peace.

Re: POD X3 volume knobs not working

Thank you again for your help. I also was caught up in the believing what others said. YES, Since I realized my STUPIDITY and calmed down enough to think what it could be other than having it repaired. It is a very sophisticaed and deep unit which does have a learning curve. I took it yesterday and hooked it directly to my Studio monitors rather than through the amps. BOY what a HUGE IMPROVEMENT OF SOUND! It seems the X3 POD Pro likes a direct connection to the amplified studio speakers better than my amps. I guess I just haven't figured how to hook it up to the amps? I have not ran through the loop on the amps but have heard to try it. I am having trouble getting sounds to the 31 and 32 banks now. It is telling me I need to upgrade gear box to 3.0 or higher but my gear box is already 3.72. I am re-installing gear box to see if that helps? The POD continues to reset itself every time I try to put sounds in these banks. It feezes up also but I can use the lower left knob to get it out of the bank. If I try anything else it will reset. Any advice with it? Thanks, Dave

Re: POD X3 volume knobs not working

When using Gearbox, bear in mind that it uses internal memory on the computer with its Hardware Memory window. You can make adjustments in that window, drag/drop tones and patches to different banks (like 31 and 32) but that's all occurring on the computer. None of it is saved to the X3 until you use the Gearbox PUT command. This command (PUT ALL or PUT SELECTED) is what actually saves/loads the selected patches from the Gearbox internal memory to the X3.

Re: POD X3 volume knobs not working

I understand that it won't save it to the X3 until I select PUT on top left of gear box. I have done that but can't seem to get banks 31 and 32 to even activate on Gear box. When I click on the bank 31a gear box has a message that says I need to upgrade to version 3.0 in order to use the tone. I did have a couple of sounds tell me this but I put it on X3 anyway. Then I reset everything when I had the MV trouble. The banks all said USER from I think 18-32? I was able to load and save to every bank until I reached Bank 31a. Then I received the messages and after the message the X3 resets but does so very quickly. Then it says the USB is not connected also. It has been doing this since yesterday. I re-loaded gear box and monkey but still nothing. I am wondering if there is a way to lock certain banks that I might have accidently done? I have looked but can't find anything on it. I would bet just as what happened to the MV has now happened to the banks. I probably did something to cause it! Hey, I am LEARNING. LOL

Re: POD X3 volume knobs not working

No - there's no setting to lock certain banks. What you describe shouldn't be happening. First I would try reinstalling the X3 firmware version 2.0 and try things again. Next step would be to update the X3 driver.

If neither of those solve things I would try reflashing  the X3 memory. This may wipe out all your presets and restore to factory presets, so first make a backup of your bundle using Gearbox. Then hold down the right nav key while powering on the X3. Select FLASH MEMORY and then run Line 6 Monkey. Also select the Flash Memory function there. When finished, power down the X3, restart, and reload your saved bundle using Gearbox.

Let us know how things work out. If you're still having problems I suggest you initiate a new thread in this forum, and mark it as a question (use the little tick box at the bottom of the text window when you start the thread). This will get more people looking at your problem and hopefully more and better opinions and suggestions than just mine.

                  We'll get it resolved.
