POD XT Live question

Ok I am new to this type of effects system. Basically when hooked this up to my amp it just sounds like garbage. I tried following the instructions but no matter what I do these effects are just horrible. I have a line six spider III amp, clean channel is set, etc.. I remember back in the day when you hooked an effects unit into your amps effects loop it sounded great, nothing major to do but with this it is not the case. Any help on hooking this up right and setting it properly would be appreciated. At this point all I can say is because of my ignorance with this stuff, I am not very happy with the unit.
I guess to begin with...what is your definition of garbage?
Access noise? Too much distortion?...What amp do you have? How does the X3 sound with headphones?
It does take a little set-up to get the max sounds from the X3...but it shouldn't be difficult...
It could be you have a defective X3...in which case you'll need to get an exchange.....but lets be sure it's the unit and not some other problem...

Well basically all of the effects Sound crappy, muddy, running together etc.. Some I can hardly hear, others I can hear ok but they still sound poor quality. I am using a spider III amp from Line six. The output it going into the input on the front of the amp, I have it on the clean channel, all built in effects are off, all tone controls are set to 12:00, output level on the pod is set to 9:00. I tried adjusting what are you connected to and all options are ok at best. I tried plugging in headphones to the unit and listening to it that way bypassing the amp all together and it still sound like crap. One again adjusting all of the settings, selecting what I am connected to etc... I wish I had an amp with an effects loop but seems like most do not come with one.
If you've listened w/ headphones....and it sounds bad to you....I'd suggest taking it into the place where you bought it....and compare it to another X3 unit....using headphones...
It sounds like you have your amp set up well....does it sound fine on it's own? What model Line 6 amp is it?
If you hear wonderful, non-garbage sounds from the store unit...then get an exchange...as I asume you are under 30 days......
There are a lot of us here...and thousands other places who find the X3's sound pretty decent....so you may have a faulty unit...in which case you need to get it replaced....or...if you find that you just don't like the X3's sounds...period....trade it back on a unit you do like...ie: Boss, Vox...etc...
Remember...that the X3 is fully editable...and you have a lot of parameters to adjust and create sounds with....
Or....maybe it's not for you....
Enjoy!

First thing I'd suggest you do is hook up a pair of headphones to the XT Live and listen to what it really sounds like.
Second, since you're hooking it up to the input of the Spider, what's happening is 1) either you're hitting the front of the amp with too much signal from the XTL or 2) perhaps the tone controls aren't set in the middle?
Try connecting it to the CD/MP3 in. What you really need with a XTL is an effects loop or a PA, something really clean that doesn't have any gain stages at all. Whatever model you're using is probably influencing the sound a lot.
Make sure on the back where you cords are plugged in that the switch where it says line/amp is selected to amp. Also hit the output mode on the front under the effects tweak knob. Select combo pwramp. That should clear things up for you.
And perhaps one other thing would be to make sure you have no amp model selected on the POD (amp by-pass) since it sounds like you only want it for the effects, not the amp models.
If you play live, your best bet is to run direct to the PA, but if in rehearsal (or playing by yourself) it sounds like crap, can't imagine you'd want to risk playing crap live!
Stay in the mix and in the know.
