Workbench USB adapter and MIDI Time out and other issues

Hello. Just received the workbench USB adapter, downloaded the latest Monkey and Workbench. Updated the firmware on my Variax 600. I'm using a macbook pro running 10.5.8. All seems well until I try to sync. I get a MIDI Time out alert box with no other text except a continue button. So I tried to download an earlier version of the software. If I try again I get this:
An exception was caught.

Any thoughts pretty please? I've tried all three USB ports.
Thanks!!
i dont have a mac but i imagine usb works the same. in previous posts it has been mentioned that you should disconnect all usb devices. you may have already done this but i thought id mention it also i think theres a problem with workbench and the latest mac operating system.
if thats the case you might want to look back through the posts to see if theres a fix for the problem.
Thanks for the help but there are no other usb devices connected. I'll try to look back on other posts. I'm probably just going to send this back to Sweetwater and leave an appropriate review.
yeah give the older posts a look see im sure there was something about it.
Hello,
This is a Workbench "Java" error. Did you download the altest version of Workbench from the Line 6 site or did you take the Workbench from your disc? Please see the following links for possible resolutions:

Yes, I downloaded the latest workbench and monkey. The flash update worked well.
I can't access

I get:
Thanks for your response.

Hello,
There was something weird going on with that link. I redid the link, does it work for you now?
Still not working. Thanks
Can you copy/paste the link? Can you try a different browser? It is working for me in Mozilla Firefox.
No luck. Pasted it into Safari and Firefox.
Hello,
I made a new document, let's see if this works for you:

Thank you for the effort but none of these items addresses the JAVA issue I'm experiencing. Any other thoughts before I send this back or have sweetwater involved?
last thing you may want to try is to download the latest version of java to your machine incase there is an error in the version that is on your computer.
My Java is up to date. Thanks
If you are using an "earlier" version of Workbench this could be a problem, as there were some Java fixes over time. This sounds like a computer issue, macbooks are known to have "USB" connection problems. Here is a screen shot from my Macbook (running 10.5.7) showing everything connected.
You should try connecting to another computer and loading the latest software to see if this is a computer issue.

My connection seems perfect until I try to transfer a new patch to the guitar.
I'll keep trying,
Dave
Hello,
Have you tired another computer to see if a different hardware configuration works for you?
Not yet but I shall.
Thanks,
Dave
I tried the system on an imac running the same system and got the same problem.
I tried it on a windows machine. When I was installing workbench it said that it could not install java runtime so I installed java from the sun site. Restarted and I get the message "could not find valid java runtime."
This is getting tedious!
Just to be clear: on the mac the variax is recognized and everything seems to work well until I attempt to sync changes with the guitar. Then I get the MIDI time out error.
At this point it sounds like the Variax may be having problems. You may want to discuss the situation with Sweetwater to see if they can repair unit for you.
Please let us know if you need further assistance, or close out the ticket as “answered” if your situation has been resolved.
After speaking with Sweetwater, their tech support put me in direct contact with Line6 tech support (Kudos to Sweetwater!). The suggestions were to install JAVA 5 into the PC. If that doesn't work exchange the Workbench USB interface. Failing that have the guitar looked at.
I'll keep this thread alive until it's dead.
Did updating the java on the PC with JRE 5 make a difference for you?
No, I'm afraid that it still did not work.
At this point you should exchange the USB interface and see if a replacement changes anything. If not, you will want to have your guitar looked at. Please start a new thread if you continue to have problems.
I have arranged for an exchange of the usb I/F
Thank you.
>>>> Success!!!
I exchanged the USB interface and the system appears to be syncing perfectly now.
Whew and
Thanks to all.
