New song 'Ashes'

Hi guys, this is our new, it's a wee bit heavier than our other songs. http://www.yourguitarplace.com/sites/project.php?user=42&pid=536

Any comments are appreciated.

All guitars were recorded with my PODX3Live directly into a Roland 2480.

Thanks for listening Joe.

Great sound and construction.Vocals a bit dry for me and the solo guitar/s in the middle are a tad overpowering in the mix.For the vocals an old trick is to use a a small amount of medium to large room reverb but with a large pre-delay.That keeps them at the front of the mix but adds some ambience.Even on commercial recordings when we think vocals are,"Dry" they usually have some clever recording techniques used and processing.

      sheppola,

For eons I have struggled between trying to make my vocals sound BIGGER and being able to understand my lyrics while listening.  I tried your "reverb trick" on a song of mine & I think it helped my vocals significantly!  Thanks for the tip!!

I use it quite often. It appears like the vocals have no treatment when,"In-the-mix" and keeps them to the front but without that unnatural too dry effect.Another way to enhance them as well is to make a Sub-vocal track as well and route the vocals to it and use Parallel Compresiion some times known as New York compression.

        http://www.mutantaudio.net/tutorials/parallel_compression_tutorial/parallel_compression_tutorial_ma.html

Although primarily used on drum tracks it can be used with added EQ on a Vocal track and then the sub mix is lifted under the main vocal. You can even delay the Submix by a few milliseconds to get a better effect.

Another trick is to use a decent stereo Chorus like the Free,"Classic Chorus",

        http://www.kjaerhusaudio.com/classic-chorus.php

with only a small amount of depth so it doesn't colour the sound but spreads and delays it.

All sound engineering is Deception. The sound only exists in out mind's perception and any trick will do to make it sound normal/good.

          sheppola,

Thanks for the additional information!  In the latest song I posted on my music website, I did parallel compression on Fembot's vocals (I completed the song a few months ago).  Her vocals were getting lost in the mix, so I tried all sorts of things.  Just adding compression (with tube modelling) to her vocals helped, but it sounded better yet when I mixed in a copy of her vocals without the extra compression.

    fj,

This is the first time I recall hearing vocals on your recordings (yay!!!).  Most of the time the singer sounds very good (though once in awhile he gets slightly pitchy).  What is the story on the drums?  I like them for the most part.  Overall, I think it sounds pretty good!
