Everyone should own a Michael Kelly guitar of some sort

I don't know whatever happened to Septemfluous, but I owe him a *huge* thank you for turning me on to the Michael Kelly brand. I bought a jumbo acoustic electric by MK back in the summer and in my search to replace the Ibanez SZ I thought I might try the MK Patriot Custom. Although my favorite color in the family is the amber one:
I ended up getting a "black fade" used on eBay for $270!!!
It showed up today and I can't get over what a high quality instrument this is. Both pups are individually coil-tappable, and bouncing between single and dual coil mode on the front pup alone was great for bright, stratty tones and then dark, smooth jazz-ish tones without any adjustments. Dial in the bridge pup and the thing just shines. The neck pocket is angled to fit your hand perfectly as you slide up the neck. I liked my Ibanez, but I never liked the pickups. That doesn't seem to be a problem for this guitar -- it's got some sort of "PAF Plus" pups and they sound killer.
Here's the MF description:
It starts with an extra deeply carved maple top on a hand-selected mahogany body. The set-in neck is tightly fit to assure maximum sustain and performance.
Installed in this best-in-class body is a set of pickups developed especially for this guitar, built using the same classic all USA Made components as many collectible humbuckers. To give the Custom a high output edge while retaining a deep rich tone requires exacting specifications, including a special overwound technique. Normally, humbuckers are mounted from plastic rings, suspending them apart from the full vibration and tone of the body. These are attached directly to the maple and mahogany body to draw every ounce of sound out. The coil splitting allow you to switch each pickup from a full humbucker tone to a single-coil tone with a simple push-pull pot.
An ebony fingerboard, recessed control knobs, Grover tuners, real abalone block inlays, TonePros locking bridge and an amazing flame maple top complete this amazing package.
Yeah, sure -- there's some sales hyperbole in there, but I was fully prepared to spend the $450 or so it would've taken to buy this new, and I would have thought I'd stolen something.
Seriously, if you're in the market for LP style dual humbucker, this thing should be on your list. Read the revews on Harmony Central and on the MF.com website. Really, forget the price, this guitar feels and sounds as nice as my Fender American Deluxe Strat.
Cheers,
Fester2k
Looks really nice. Amazing they can offer all that for so little money.

True that. The only corners they cut, as far as I can tell, are (1) the knobs and (2) the pickup selector switch. Neither element is awful or anything, they're just not as nice as the rest of the guitar. I'm taking this guitar to practice today, we'll see how she does in a full band setting. I'm not worried. ![]()

Update: Guitar rawks in band setting. I put a fresh set of 11's on there before practice and she responded beatifully. Cranked it to very, very high volume through the M13/Egnater Renegade head and it sounded monstrously good, even in single coil mode!
Nice, chimey cleans? Check.
Dark, rich jazzy humbucker neck sounds? Check.
Smooth mid gain rhythm work? Check.
Meltdown metal? Check.
No, it's not a strat. If I were doing a blues/SRV cover thing, I'd probably stick with my strat. But for an amazing variety of great sounds, I can't say enough good things about this guitar. Very versatile, very play-able.
My lead singer (who has a LP) played it and said it felt and sounded better than his LP. He was jealous. ![]()

Nice find Fester! I'm jealous too! You can never have enough guitars!!!
fester2k,
Good one! I was going to ask you how it sounds compared to an LP until I read your last entry. Do they ever put a tremolo on a similar guitar? Not familiar with the Michael Kelly brand. OT: I was trying to remember what state you live in. Is it Arizona or Calif. or ?
Hardly ever see a LP style guitar with a trem, I think the stop tailpiece is a big part of their sound/feel.
Slingy,
Yeah, it seems like you usually see a Bigsby tremolo on an LP, if it has a tremolo. I have only played Gibson LP's a few times, but quite impressed with the tone. Not sure if that Bigsby affects the tone much.
fester2k,
I don't think I could ever buy a purple guitar, but otherwise both of those geetars look very nice. I could never buy a guitar without trying it first. I noticed the hour glass is made in Vietnam. I don't recall seeing a Vietnamese guitar before. If you painted the hourglass all black, it would look quite similar to my Yamaha SBG 1300 TS. I lived in Fort Worth from 1968 to 1971. Is there any decent surfing in Texas? OK, on this website the Blood Red doesn't look so purple:

Been looking to buy one myself but all the stores around herre that used to carry then don't anymore. Seems to be only available thru Musicians Friend or Sam Ash. Would like to play one before I order one...They look awesome, Guitar Player did a review of the Patriot Decree and couldn't say enough good things about it.

Thanks! I'm thinking about getting a MK "Phoenix" as a backup/alternate tuned guitar for live gigs.

Yeah, very LP-ish, but honestly I've never owned a real LP, so my ability to judge is a bit limited. I've played a few @ GC and none of them really did anything for me. Played tons of Epi's and a few were nice -- most felt horrible in my hands.
MK makes two series of guitars with a whammy bar. One line is called the "Hex" and they make several versions. I've got my eye on a "Hex Deluxe":
I'm not wild about the reverse headstock, and I also am nervous about active pups, but the reviews on this guitar are similar to the Patriot series, so it's probably worth a flier.
MK also makes a PRS style guitar called an "Hourglass Ltd." with a Wilkinson (read: non-locking) tremolo but neither MF nor Sam Ash carries them:
Just found an Hourglass on ebay (a B-stock) for $399 with a case: http://cgi.ebay.com/MICHAEL-KELLY-Hourglass-Limited-guitar-NEW-Spalt-Maple_W0QQitemZ200391671396QQcmdZViewItemQQptZGuitar?hash=item2ea8463e64#ht_2693wt_1166
Hmm...just noticed that the Hourglass is made in Vietnam -- my Patriot was made in Korea, I think.
Oh, and I live in beautiful Austin, Texas. ![]()

Yeah, it's a tough road buying guitars online, IMHO. I've had some good and some not-so-good experiences. Most have been good, though. I'd suggest getting whichever one you want through MF.com, and understand that if you don't like it, the cost of shipping it back is your risk (which isn't cheap, btw--usually @$45-$55 in my experience). Definitely make sure you get a deal from MF.com -- either wait for one of their 10-20% off sales, or call 'em and see if they'll give you a discount. Recent personal and anecdotal reports suggest that they're pretty loose with the discounts lately

The same Patriot Custom here:) And you`re right. It`s amazing guitar! Absolutely fantastic!!! Ok, seriously, it IS a good guitar!!
So everybody, don`t think, just get one.
