Line 6 Pod X3 Pro Questions?

I am interested in purchasing a line 6 pod x3  Pro but have a few questions:

1) I want to use it primarily for amp modelling and recording (I live in an apartment and a cranked am isn't an option). Do you guys find that this unit is effective for that purpose?

2)  How should I plug this in? I use a Mac, Logic 8, and an RME Fireface 800

3) It looks as though I could plug in two completely different guitar rigs and record them both at the same time. Is this true?

4) How well do you think it works with vocals?

5) Does it come with a computer program to edit patches? and if so do you downlad it offline or does it come with a disk? I do not have internet access on that computer, is there a way around downloading it directly, IE: download it to a flash drive and then upload it on my mac?

6) I would be using my own effect pedals. Would it be possible to plug them into an fx loop in this unit? If I were to record two different guitar setups at the same time, are there two effects loops?

I know these are a lot of questions but I greatly appreciate any help. Thanks!

Yes it works with Macs, but is not yet supported under OS 10.6 Snow Leopard. That's being worked on.

I think I found where you are supposed to download the programs. But which ones do I download via the decribed method:

            Line 6 monkey 1.31

            Drivers 4.2.4

            Pod Farm 1.11
Riffworks 2.2.2 (if this is just sound recording software then I probably don't need this)

            Flash Memory 1.20.00

Variax Workbench 1.58  (I don not own the line 6 variax)

            Gear Box 3.70

(I am assuming that the latest version downloads the previous versions as well, please correct me if I'm wrong)

Do I need all of the above programs, and are these free downloads when you purchase the Pod X3 Pro or do they all cost extra? And when I downlaod them I should have chosen the MAC OS X option, correct ? (I use MAC OS X 10.5.6)

            Thanks again!

You're right about all of the above software, including Riffworks and Workbench. You don't need those if you don't want reording software and if you don't use a Variax guitar.

All of this software is included in the purchase of the X3 Pro - you won't need to purchase any of these as extras.

MAC OS 10.5.x is supported and, yes, choose the MAC option.

There have been previous threads in this forum describing the installation procedures for an offline computer using a flash drive. Search for something like 'offline installation' and find the thread(s) that seem most useful to you.

One other suggestion: begin with Line 6 Monkey. After installing it, run it to help you install the other pieces; I think it gives you an option to 'install from file' rather than the website. When installing the driver, pay close attention to Monkey's instructions re: when to have the X3's USB cable connected/disconnected.

            God Luck with it.

    1) Yes - works great for that purpose. I suggest a good set of closed headphones for monitoring.

    2) You plug the X3 Pro to the mac via a USB 2.0 (NOT 1.x) port. Don't use a USB hub. This connection will support all software downloads/updates from the Line 6 website to the X3 Pro. It will also support the computer program for patch editing (see below). The USB can also be the audio interface for your DAW, but you may want a different setup to make use of your Fireface.

    3) Yes (but you may need another guitar player )

    4) Excellent. There are several mic/acoustic preamp models and many preset patches for vocals.

    5) Two questions here:

    a) Yes - Gearbox is the standalone editor/GUI. The X3 also comes with POD Farm - as plugin for a DAW to get all the same X3 effects in your DAW.

    b) Yes - download online to flash drive then manually install on your mac.

    6) Yes - but only one effect loop (i.e. guitar) at a time.

    Hope this helps.
