Can my XT Live do this?

Pardon me if this is a really dumb question.  I have a laptop running Windows XP that is replacing an old desktop computer.  I will be installing some music recording/editing software (vendor not yet selected - but something very easy to use).  I plan to connect my drum machine and synthesizer module to the computer and control them with the software.  My old desktop had a game controller to MIDI port that was used to send MIDI information to these devices.  My laptop only has USB.  I was going to purchase a USB-to-MIDI adapter.  But it occurred to me, can I just use the XT Live to act as the USB-to-MIDI adapter?  That is, can I connect the laptop to the XT Live via USB and then chain the drum machine and synth to the XT Live via its MIDI ports?

    It may work!

But the Pod is not a Midi Controller.

What this means, is that you will not be able to patch or turn off/on MIDI signals to the intended device, and if more than one MIDI device uses the same Channel.... then you will have a problem!

Look at a site called MIDI Solutions  They have MIDI gadgets that may help you in this regard?
