MAC OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard x86 & Line6 Edit for PODxt Pro

Guys,

I'm getting the following exception when trying to launch Line6Edit for my POD xt Pro on Apple's latest OS on a Mac Mini :

An exception was caught.

Hi,

Yes... none of our applications at this point in time are supported for Snow Leopard OSX 10.6.x. We have a Beta Driver 4.2.4 for our USB audio interfaces released; software programs such as Line 6 Edit, GearBox and POD Farm are not 100% guaranteed to run in this new OS.   The link you posted for a workaround for Snow Leopard + Line6 Edit is now dead. I know it was posted a long time ago. Can you post the fix again? Also, if I am a normal user with no developer skills, is this a fix I can implement?
  Also, do you know if this will work for a Pod X3 Pro? It seems all the discussions have been about using Pod XT Pro.

      Yeah I am putting my PODxt Live up for sale this week. Time to go back to the old tried, tested, and true analog pedals. I am done with the PODxt...screw it.

    I wouldn't hold out ANY hope for Line6 to pay any further attention to the PODXt Pro or its software. The product line is dead, and they've probably moved their engineers off to "current" products.
    
    I've already sold mine, and moved to the GT-10B with zero regrets.

      I think I will sell and go else where I think line 6 has great stuff, but I don't think I can support them if they cant support me (or I should say them selves) there are lots of java programers out there they could hire to do a fix in no time, this is just lazy!! thanks for the posts

        do what you need to do for you, of course....
        but it was apple that chose to remove support for the older version of java...
        as you can read here... those that get the older version installed by going around apple's choice... get the software to work...
        same is true if you had a windows machine... the older version of java is required there too... only difference is that microsoft has not blocked you from using it or made it more difficult to use....
        i agree that it SHOULD work... i'm just saying that there is blame to spread around... and i don't rightly buy that the golden apple should completely skate since it was a decision of theirs that made the current software stop working.

        if you did everything else... seems that this would be the last step:
        
        to change the default Java version used, open up the Java Preferences utility located in /Applications/Utilities.
        and make sure that version 1.5 is at the top of the list.

        I must disagree with your assertion that Apple shares "blame" because they made it "more difficult" to run obsolete software.
        
        Both Microsoft and Apple are being good citizens by staying current with the latest Sun release of Java. The only odd man out is Line6, who chose not to stay current, and who requires users to degrade their systems to run their software.
        
        Bottom line, Line6 has every right to discontinue support for a product. I wish it weren't so. But this is a Line6 decision - not a Microsoft or Apple shortcoming.

        Exactly, I have to say yes it seems to work now, and It is good support for you to help get it going, but you have to keep it up to date, I'm glad it works but now I have to wonder what I might have screwed up to get this to work?

        you didn't screw anything up... both the new version and the old version of java can co-exist... which is the main reason that i think apple did a real disservice by making it difficult to accomplish.

        you can disagree... have at it....
        true the software and hardware we are talking about here is old and could rightly be discontinued....
        but apple was only making things easier for themselves... not the users when they chose to make it NOT an option for a user to use their machine, in whichever way they choose... unfortunately for the users... this is a huge downfall for a closed operating system... so in essence... the users made that decision when they chose mac in the first place.... so then lets blame the users... completely ridiculous... since the users have no way of knowing what apple will force them to do....
        
        anyway... i own several macs, and several windows machines, i very well know the difference....
        but you can certainly continue wearing your cupertino shades....
        personally i think macs are a very capable machine... but they have limitations... just like windows or anything else...
        why apple chose to make an artificial limitation by blocking older software.....? no idea.... other than it serves them best... and in some way they think it serves their users... hardly the case here though....

    I just used this link here http://line6.com/software/
    That takes you to the Line 6 update/download page.
    Once you fill in what product you're looking for, software you want and type of Operating System you're using
    the update for Line 6 EDIT will appear. Download it and you're good to go. Hope this helps.

Cheers for the fix guys!

Much appreciated, but I think I'm gonna wait for those lazy bums in Line6 to come up with a viable solution for their software to be supported on Snow Leopard.

I just can't believe it takes them so long (sounds like they only started to work on the software side when the new OS came out!).

It's not like Snow Leopard hadn't been announced for years ... Not impressed at all ...

Hello,

That work around seems to be working for other users. We can't support it but if you haven't yet, you may want to give it a try. We're still not supporting SL officially but will report any changes as they come.

Hey Line6Miller, I totally understand mate. I know you guys are doing your best. Sorry, didn't mean to have a go at you.

I'm just ****** with whoever's in charge of the software development team in Line6 ... you (I mean they, LOL) can't possibly pretend to sell of whole line of decent quality hardware products intended for both professionals and enthusiasts alike, without planning on releasing the software to support it (which also enables all the funky features people have purchased the kit for in the first place by the way). Now it's been 3 months SL has came out and surely they knew about it way before we even heard the rumour ... It's poor planning as far as I'm concerned and I feel treated like back then in the dark ages when I was buying cheap creative soundcards on a PC ... hence the whinge :-) ... Sorry.

I've tried the fix by the way and it doesn't do it for me. I get a bit farther now (i.e. I can launch Line6Edit) but it doesn't pick up on my Pod Xt Pro (I have the latest driver 4.2.4) ... I'll wait until those Java experts come up with something reliable ... hopefully they'll add support for the Pod X3 Pro in Line6Edit as well (Gearbox is a piece of junk as far as I'm concerned - but I'll keep that for later on ;-) ...

  well, while there's still no official Snowleopard support for line6 edit, the fix that is presented do work
  Just copy and paste "line by line" what iainpwboyd posted and enter your password if you have one when the
  terminal prompts you to (no the curser doesnt move when you do...) and all is fine.
  
  I'm editing my vettaII combo as I write this. It works Stricnine. Promiss.
  
  Just make sure you follow the steps exactly as it's written. Don't worry. The terminal isn't something I
  usually mess around with but this time I just had to try. Here are pictures "Before and After" the fix

    I appreciate the help. I'm some sort of an IT person myself and have been using the terminal console on various Unix systems for years now so I think I got the fix right. It did 'work' and allowed me to circumvent the Java related error message. However, my problem is with the driver now, as I can't get my PODxt Pro to be recognised on Line6Edit's launch (i.e. I get the same screen as the one you posted but on the next screen I see a big nasty red cross on the icon of my gear). It simply doesn't pick it up. I've tried versions 4.2.4 & 4.2.5 of the said driver with no results now.
    
    The most annoying part is that OSX sees the PODxt Pro's driver and also allows me to use the hardware (i.e. record from it) in other softwares like Audacity, etc. Only line6 software doesn't recognise its own hardware, what a pathetic joke! ...

Chaps,

What happened to the workaround thread ? ... I think I've been over confident yesterday and updated my driver to the latest version (4.6.8) ... then installed the j2se6 update 1 (which I was reluctant to until Line6 came up with official support for SL ...erm). Now Line6Edit is crappy as hell (wouldn't close properly and uses 100% CPU) ...

Any chance you could fix up the link to the previous workaround so I could revert back to j2se5 ? ...

WHAT IN THE F@$K is happening with this company!?!?!

I cannot use Line 6 Edit with Windows 7 so it donned on me this morning, "Hey, I can use my MAC and edit my modelers that way!" only to find out there is no driver support for Snow Leopard now!?!?!?!? WHY...it has been out since late last summer!! Come on Line 6! Never again will I buy your crap products, I am no fed up beyond believe and I hope someone slaps a class action suit against you for screwing over your customers who have given you so much $$. Sure you keep coming out with new products but no drivers or support. I am pi55ed! Why have I invested thousands of my hard earned cash into this company?!?!?

Hahahahaha, this is very funny. I just FINALLY register my PODxt Live & connect it to my computer, after updating to the latest & greatest software & OS, only to find out that now my set-up is TOO GOOD for Line 6. Great Job!

I like the workaround - Sell your POD gear.

Well, I thought it would be easier to see all the controls on the computer screen while I tweak my sounds, but I guess I will have to bend over my PODxt Live, and continuously flip through menu's on the little 1.5 square-inch screen. YAY! At least I found this thread before I actually PURCHASED any Line 6 software!!!

P.S. I'm assuming if Line 6 didn't come out with a Snow Leopard update to 'Line 6 Edit' by now, they won't ever. WTG! Line 6 ftw!!

P.P.S. this post = another reason why we need a "sarcasm" font

      Any updates on this Line 6 Edit/ Snow Leopard problem? I just got back to using Line 6 Edit this week after being away from it for a year (touring).
      I start recording , using my POD xt Live, and "Edit " goes from barely working to not working at all! I see from other post this problem has been going on a long time.
      This is my livelihood. I've come to depend on computers, plug-ins, updates etc. Maybe far to much. This is a perfect example of me , an artist, staying on top technology
      and getting screwed by it. Line 6, you put yourself in this game and it's your responsibilty to stay on top of things just like I do in my business.

  Propellerhead Record apparently comes with a fully functioning Pod for Guitar and Bass. It is also fully certified and runs on Mac OS.
  So how is it that Propellerhead can get it to work yet Line6 themselves cannot?
  
  Though I have not personally tried Record - can anyone verify it does in fact work? I already have Reason so a full copy of Record for ~$150 would seem a pretty good deal for a Pod that is programmable and works.

    Another thing, Line6 Edit comes bundled with POD Farm. A friend of mine paid a couple hundred bucks for that - and Line6 Edit still doesn't work, same Java error. Freeware not working is one thing, but when it comes in a product you pay for...

Snow Leopard, like any modern operating system, is capable of having multiple versions of Java installed at the same time. You can use Java Preferences.app to change which version to use at any given time.

This wiki article has very detailed and easy to follow instructions to ~~get Line6 Edit working~~ get Java 5 running side by side with Java 6 in OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard)

  @Stricnine: Thanks man... Installing 32-bit JAVA 5 has done the trick in getting L6 Edit to work on 10.6.x
  
  This is a valid fix. It's just such a shame that it's taken the good will of all these people so long to find something viable and all that time there has been no actual official word from Line6. That is beyond shoddy to be honest it's actually pretty irresponsible. Should "The man" be reading this thread, please take note: you are slowly but surely alienating a very loyal, and valuable customer base by basically not communicating with them.
  
  Have got loads of Line 6 products in my setup and studio, always highly recommended and great results. So come on guys live up to the hype and deliver this tiny little thing called SUPPORT!

    Hi all, just found this thread after I finally moved my entire (pretty complicated) mac pro system to 10.6.4 from 10.5.8
    
    I had everything working except for Line 6 Edit...
    
    I've just done the Java for 10.5 install as described above..its working now to my relief
    
    I want to thank the patient users here who found this solution and to add my voice to the disappointment with Line 6 as a company..
    
    It does their company no favors at all to be spruiking new products when their current customers are suffering with incompatible software..
    
    shame on you Line 6....I'll certainly be taking another look at the competition when it comes time to replace my PodXT live...

        If you are a dedicated windows user then STFU and move on...that is the sign of maturity.
        
        It is encumbent on Line6 to work with the software and systems that are current.
        Out of literally thousands of software elements on my mac pro, everything from TC powercore, protools, cubase, reason and record...hundreds of plugins..
        the one piece of software that did not work (how many months after a major system update for mac osx?) was Line6 Edit.
        
        There's no excuse, and it's utterly pathetic of you to attempt to make one when customers themselves had to come up with a solution.
        
        Maybe Line6 shouldn't be coding using Java...of course since you know so much you would also be aware that Line6 Edit has been buggy across 2 versions of Mac OSX for almost 2 years now.

        it is there job to work with the current stuff....
        however they haven't released a new device that uses line6 edit in over 5 years.
        
        they probably shouldn't be coding in java....
        in fact they made gearbox the editor for the xt line so they didn't have to deal with the java issues any more.
        
        but the closed operating system you chose... chose to strip the functionality... not Line6.
        
        i own mac's.... and that is the reason for the avatar... it's my personal opinion based on real world knowledge...
        
        i just think it's funny how you are very quick to give apple a pass....

        for the record i KNOW this post will be helpful to others... and answer this very question for people many times.
        
        perhaps the most useful nugget will be that those with pod XT's can skip the hassles and use gearbox....
        i know some prefer Edit... but it's not worth the effort and not actively supported...

        You are an apologist, despite desperately trying to make it seem like im excusing Apple (again i remind you that literally hundreds of other software companies have had no problem supporting snow leopard - btw you could address that point if you really think you have one at all)
        
        Gearbox is simply no comparison for a dedicated editor.
        
        Your comments, which are clearly outnumbered by other (primary mac using) customers here are clearly not representative or anything like a reasonable excuse for the lack of support, much less the idea
        that it's 'not worth it'.
        
        I have no idea what your motives are for excusing this...though anyone petty enough to have an apple logo struck out as an avatar should be deemed fairly suspicious.

        and i'm not wrong.
        
        and for the record... this issue is not exclusive to mac's....
        windows users have the same issue, because it's a java issue... windows users also need to install 1.5
        
        sure hundreds of companies support snow leopard... and so does L6....
        however... snow leopard does not officially support java 1.5, and that is where the issue is....
        now should L6 update edit to use java 1.6.... the latest and snow leopard supported version of java....
        well yes... if they hadn't already replaced line6 edit with the gearbox editor...

It's been over a year, and Line 6 has still not addressed this issue. Absolutely inexcusable. Just re-write the freakin' editor in a Snow Leopard-compatible version of Java.

This send me a solid message that Line 6 is not interested in supporting its Mac population.

I'm selling my Bass Pod XT Live, and going to the Boss GT-10B.

I am a huge fan of my PODXT PRO but I have to agree with this stream. An issue in Snow Leapord is WAAAAY overdue for a fix. It has been out for a long time now and not adressing this is ignoring a massive percentage of the recording community. i do not even KNOW anyone using windows for recording anymore.

Please get this fix done and published soon!

Hello guys.

I have the same problem with of java version on my Snow Leopard 10.6.

I found this article http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20100123192950640- How re-enable Java 1.5 on Snow Leopard.

I tried and work for me.

After install Java 1.5 go to Java Preferences (Applications -> Utilities) and change the order for Java 1.5 is at top of the list.

Anyway, still awaiting an official solution "Line 6"

LINE6 EDIT update now works with java 1.6

meaning it will work on snow leopard.

  Jeeeezzz !!! ... I've posted this about 17 months ago now and there's finally been an update which will "might" allow me to use the full potential of my gear with my computer - no need to mention updating Java to the latest version to circumvent security issues I've been exposed to for the last 17 months !!! That's what you can call quick service ...
  
  From my experience, I have to say I reckon I will have stay away from Line6 in the future due to a complete lack of support from the developers (Nothing to do with the support guys though who I reckon did their best to help out! Cheers guys!) ... Shame! I really liked the gear but simply can't do without hooking it up to my computer.
  
  If only Line6 were not so busy trying to sell more and more useless toys and rather try and look after their core enthusiast customers who'd stick to the brand for life ... I think they might have earned a lot more in the long run. Anyways.

    When I read the latest postings concerning this subject I questioned it's validity. I, like many others, had an issue with Line 6 EDIT not working on Snow Leopard.
    I went to the update page and downloaded the latest update, connected my POD xt Live, went to LINE 6 EDIT, and SURPRISE!! I'm happy to report LINE 6 EDIT works great on Snow Leopard ( I've updated to10.6.6 ).
    I downloaded some Custom Tones (from the Custom Tones Download section of LINE 6 ) no problem. So if your running Snow Leopard you can use LINE 6 EDIT.
    No tweaking java or digging into the depths of your computer to find a workaround. They fixed it.

  This is great news, just in time for the release of apple's new OS Lion I hope they play nice? I havent downloaded the new line6 release but I'm hoping there is a visual update every time I open the app I fill like getting a mullet and rocking a 80's tune, but hay as long as it works ROCK ON... thanks
