Workbench software will not sync edited guitar model to Variax 500

I loaded the Line 6 Monkey software, along with the Workbench software (1.58) onto my computer. With everything connected, the edited guitar model (acoustic guitar body with dropped D tuning) shows up in the software but with an orange and yellow exclamation point in front of it. when I try syncing the file to the guitar, it comes up with a midi timeout error. I had the same problem with a PC loaded with Windows XP. The Uno midisport USB device updates the software on my Vetta II just fine. It even updated the variax software just fine. It just will not update a guitar model. Is there something that can be done about this. I like the guitar but if I cannot edit the guitar models on it, there is no advantage to having it to play. I need the ability to change one of the models to acoustic with jumbo body and dropped D tuning. Another problem it has is that is doesn't register string volume when I try to open the sting volume setup page.
Hello,
Can you give us some detail about your computer? What OS, other USB devices connected etc.?
Have you tried different CAT 5 cables?

Hi,
I am currently running an HP Pavillion dv7 CTO notebook computer with Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit) operating system (Service Pack 1). It has 4 Gb of RAM, a 512 Mb Video card, and a 2.0 Ghz Intel Centrino processor.
The only thing that is in a USB port besides the M-Audio Midisport UNO cable to the Vetta II head is the dongle for my wireless Logitech VX Revolution performance mouse. An M-Audio Midisport UNO is being used to communicate to the Vetta II head and a CAT-5 Ethernet cable is used between the Vetta II head and the Variax 500 guitar.
I had this same problem about a year ago when I was using my wife's older E-Machines PC with the M-Audio Midisport UNO device communicating with the Vetta II head. In both situations, the Vetta software and the Variax 500 software updated fine without any problems. It is only when I try to edit the models in the Variax guitar that I run into this problem. Otherwise, the guitar functions OK, as long as I use what came with the update ( latest version from website).
With the earlier PC, I thought it could have been something with the PC so I didn't try it again. Now, I am having a problem with my Vetta II head (the knob indicators on the LCD screen jump around frantically and the sound is very tinny). During this occurrance, I cannot edit anything on the head itself. The screens change momentarily and then go back to the original screen. (very annoying during a performance, might I add) Now that I have this notebook computer, I downloaded the software (Line 6 Monkey, Variax Workbench 1.58) from you website. I reflashed the Vetta II software without any problems and then I did the same for the guitar. I power-cycled the amp head and the same problem of jumpy knob indicators existed. I went ahead and tried doing something in the Workbench software since I had it all hooked up. The software needs a good manual for those of us in the novice range of experience. I get totally confused as to how to use this software. I may be doing something in the wrong sequence...I don't know. I do know that I need help with these problems, especially the amp's jumpy knobs and tinny sounds.
One thing to note is that the amp eventually straightens up and sounds pretty much OK, although not exactly like it should. I play a 5-string viola and an acoustic-electric Takamine guitar through a couple of amp models using the acoustic amp modeling. These sounds usually sound fairly good during this problematic operation. It is mostly the electric guitar sounds with distortion and without that sound crappy. Another thing is that the volume takes a dive during operation until it can barely be heard. This volume problem affects all the amp models, including the Factory presets.
I realy need help on this problem set as I have several gigs booked throughout November and December and this is the only amp I own. I appreciate any help you can give me.
Thanks,

i cant tell you about the software related stuff ..but the amp flickering lcd and taking a volume dive sounds like the amp needs to be serviced. i had that kind of problem with an amp . turned out to be bad solder joints. sent it to a repair tech he did the resoldering and the amp worked perfectly afterward. i dont know if your under warrantee or not but id have it looked at just in case.
+1. The amp LCD issue seems to be hardware related so you should get that checked out. The guitar timing out like that may also be some sort of hardware issue but in this case with the guitar.
Would it be possible for you to try to update the guitar with another device? Do you have a PODXTL or a Workbench Interface? Do you know someone who does?
Have you recently been able to try the update on another computer? At this point, it's all about eliminating as many possible root causes as we can.

HI,
I currently do not know anyone who uses a compatible Line 6 device to try out with my Variax 500 or Vetta II amp. I don't have these devices either nor do I have the Workbench interface device that usually comes with the software. I only have the M-Audio Midisport UNO device for communications between the devices.
My wife's computer yields the same results when upgrading or trying to edit. The Midisport UNO appears to upgrade the amp and the guitar without any glitches at all. I just have problems editing the guitar from the Workbench software and the amp is doing some crazy stuff with the LCD and sounds.
I am in the process of getting the amp looked at under an extended warranty that was purchased at time of amp purchase, so maybe I can get that taken care of. That still leaves me with questions on the editing of guitar models on the guitar itself and the Workbench software. Is there a manual for this software other than the two pages that pop up when the software opens up?
Thanks,

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having problems. There is definetely a "MIDI timeout" occuring on your system when you are trying to update the guitar. As you are having other issue with the amp the situation may be resolved once you have the amp looked at, but you will need to try updating your Variax with diffrent Line 6 hardware before you can decide that the Variax is where the problem is. You can optimize your system and check the following links to see if any of these tips help your current situation:

Hello,

Hi,
I have arranged, through an extended warranty purchased through Guitar Center, for the amp to be checked out and repaired. I have to send the amp to Professional Technical Services in Silver Spring, Maryland to get it checked out. I live in Pulaski, TN. I wanted to take it to one of the Line 6 authorized repair shops in the Nashville area since I could have driven the amp up there (only 70 miles from me) but the warranty group at Guitar Center chose the MD location for some reason. I found one that is really reputable and is used by most of the Nashville musicians.
Anyway, I will have to let you know about the repair when it gets back to me in 2 to 4 weeks. Then I can check out the Workbench problem and see if it is fixed with the amp repair. Maybe then I can close out this problem case.
Thanks guys for your generous help.
