Crackling in monitors, using Toneport UX1

I've tried the recommendations that have already been posted, including optimizing my computer settings, downloading the latest drivers and software versions, and trying different settings for buffer size, bitrate, and so on. I've checked all the hardware (monitors are brand new, cables are new/not damaged). My computer should be plenty fast enough (and when I'm not using monitors, it handles the recording software fine, with processing and memory to spare). So I've kind of reached my wits end...I just spent a bunch of money on these monitors and I can't hear anything but crackling static.
Hardware:
Laptop (Windows Vista, 64bit, 2.10GHz, 4.0GB RAM)
Toneport UX1 (connected by USB 2.0)
M-Audio Studio Monitors (connected by two 1/4" cables to Output from Toneport)
Guitar or Amp (into 1/4" Instrument input on Toneport)
Software:
Line6 Gearbox (usually set on bypass, if I'm recording direct from an amp)
Ableton LiveLite 7.0
okay just a sanity check on a few things, as I've seen the things below happen on here before.
okay, just a thought i assume you're using mono cables from the toneport analog outputs to your monitors (i.e. 2x mono = stereo).
also when you say you have your amp connected to the instrument input. i hope you mean a direct output from your amp and not a speaker output as that may kill your toneport and even your speakers. amp soeaker outputs are for one thing... connecting to speakers!
can you get sound out of the toneports headphone output to headphones??
have you tried any other speakers or even your guitar amp from the analog outputs? anything just to test that both outputs aren't faulty.
have you tried your nea monitors with something else to check they're not faulty?
let us know how you get on with those ideas...
My amp is actually a Flextone HD...it has balanced direct outs. In other words, no not the speaker outputs. I've got a cabinet hooked up and run the line out separately.
The monitors work fine...they've got an 1/8" Aux Input which plays great from my computer or Ipod.
The problem is definitely somewhere with the Toneport or my settings. I've tested the headphone output on its own, and it also produces static.
I should also mention that the sound from the software works fine, when not running through the Toneport. If I set the default output as my computer speakers, I can play back what I've recorded. But I can't use my computer speakers as the output if I'm running the Toneport as an ASIO input. I'm not sure if it's ok to use the Toneport as an MME/DirectX input and the computer speakers as an output...the Line6 and Ableton setup guides both said to run the Toneport in ASIO.
Hi,
Did you try a different USB port on your computer to see if that connection provides cleaner digital audio streaming? Let us know.

I've got a USB/eSATA port, and this provides better sound, but it still crackles, and gets worse when CPU usage goes over 20%. Even at 1-5% though, it still crackles.
Hello,
What have you done system wise to optimize your computer?
Have you turned off any wireless services, disabled your internal sound card?
Also, the crackles only happen when you use the TonePort as an ASIO devices? In other words, what happens when the TonePort is set as your sound card when you stream music or video?

Good questions. I double-checked everything...here's what I've done to 'optimize' my settings:
Now with these settings: the crackling is still bad if I run GearBox and Ableton Live, using the Toneport in ASIO. The crackling is less bad if I'm only running Itunes and playing music. If I do that, the crackles may be up to 5 seconds apart, but come in significantly louder than the music and sometimes in bursts.
This is all through the USB/eSATA port, which has better performance than my other USB ports.
Hello,
Thanks for the reply. I think at this point we should escalate your issue to our QA department and see if there is anything they can pick up on that we haven't.
Just to be absolutely thorough though, can you please verify for me that you have done the following 2 things?
1. Checked all physical cables and connections.
2. Watched this video and tried everything called out.
http://line6.com/community/docs/DOC-1490
Please let me know if you've tried all of these things. If so, we'll take your issue off line via a support ticket and continue to troubleshoot with QA. Thanks!

I ran through all 4 segments of the video, and there were some good recommendations that I had not heard yet, but after I went through everything I still had the same problem. The crackling may have been slightly decreased, but it's hard to tell.
I also tried a recommendation from another thread, about downloading an AMD USB filter to increase the prioritizing of resources for USB devices. That didn't seem to make any difference at all.
Hello,
It's been a couple of days since we've heard from you. We're going to assume your question has been answered and close this thread. If you still have questions please feel free to open a new question with us and we will answer your questions accordingly. Thanks!
Line6Miller
Please don't close the thread. It has been a few days because I have not had a chance to sit down and go through your latest recommendations. I have checked all physical connections, and as far as I can tell everything is in good shape. No visible damage, no stress/bending on any of the 1/4" cables and connectors, and the USB cable and all power supplies are in good shape. But I have not been able to check out that video yet. I would really like to forward this for further support but I didn't want to reply until I'd checked through everything you recommended.
Hello,
What model computer are you using? I'm asking because we've seen some issues with certain HP DV series laptops with AMD Turion processors.
A lot of people have inserted powered USB 2.0 hubs in line with their TonePorts and the noises have gone away.
Line6Miller
HP DV4-1225dx
Any idea why that might work?
Hello,
We're still looking into why these USB hubs improve the sound quality but at this time we aren't completely sure. I think it may have somethign to do with the way our POD Farm devices interface with the on board ports of those laptops. One theory is that they do not provide enough power to the POD Farm device.
Has this answer been helpful?
Line6Miller
Thanks...that is very helpful information. I'm going to mark this as 'answered' for now and hopefully this fixes it. I won't be able to get a USB hub right away but the power issue makes sense to me, and if that doesn't work then I'll try on here again.
OK. Feel free to post again if your issue continues. Thanks.

This is an issue with the drivers. Has to be. I recently downgraded a X3 pro to a UX2 TonPort and I get this CRACKLING issue when I record guitars, bass or vocals. The productions are unuseable which I think is unfair even though I spend less money - shouldn't it still work?
I have some 15 years experience in these things - so Im not a 15 year ols playing with his new toy, so I hope people will read this with interest,.
It sounds like the sound card can not deal with the inputs? I am using a mac with the audio input buffers set at maximum and (after reading umpteen simular posts), I have tried everything from re-installing drivers to 'checking the cables' (not that helpful Line 6!). This unit is a bedroom recording solution at best - which is such a pity as it sounds great 'LIVE' - just when you play it back!
Guess it's time to buy my X3 back as you obviously have to spend over £500 with line 6 before you get a product that will actually work?! Everything else is just Bantha Fodder.
Kind regards - a very dissapionted Jonny....
This isn't an issue with the drivers at all. You have to go into the Audio Midi settings in your system preferences and change the latency settings. By default it's set to extremely low, which runs the minimal bit depth and sample rate. This causes a lot of pops and an almost "crushed" sound sometimes. Just play around with it until you find a nice, happy medium between latency and sound quality. I set mine a notch or two below the lower medium setting and that works perfect.

I have a TonePort UX1 and Mac OSX 10.6.7. Downloaded the latest drivers and GearBox, and I still hear crackling in the Mic via GarageBand. I've tried different microphones, different audio and USB cables.
I read other uses say uninstalling the latest software and reinstalling the older software fixes this. Does anyone have any ideas?
