Spider Valve MkII combo questions

1)  do the combos run hot?  i know that the modeling portion of the amp is essentially a computer, and we all know computers like to run cool.  wouldn't feel very confident about the amp's longevity if it's constantly running hot.

2)  will my mk1 shortboard work with this amp?  if so, will i be able to do looping w/it?

3)  any way to save programs?  i know there's no Line 6 Edit support.  not sure if there's some other way?

4)  is the cabinetry plywood, or particle board/mdf?  i saw that the 412 cab is plywood so i'd like to think that that's the case w/the combos.

5)  aside from the two preamp tubes and maybe different presets, what's the difference between the mk2's and the originals?  features aside, is this newer version supposed to sound better?

Re: Spider Valve MkII combo questions

    1) They run just as hot as any other tube amp, depending on how high the bias is set.

    2) The MK1 shortboard will do just about everything on the amp except that, sorry.

    3) Line 6 has not created an interface or edit program (ala Line 6 Edit) for this amp yet....

    4) I think it may be particle board due to the vibration problems some of the 112 combos have experienced.

    5) The MK2 does NOT have preamp tubes, neither does the MK1. As far as sound goes, there is a difference. Some like the old one and others like the new one. It's the old POD 2.0 vs. PODxt battle that has been waging for ages! The new one does has much better effects!

RE: Spider Valve MkII combo questions

    Hello,

        1) Tube power amps will have heat, but there not been any known "heat" issues with the previous Spider Valve combos.

      2) You will need the FBV Mk II to control all the looping functions from the pedal, but the FBV (Mk I) will control the amp functions.

      3) There is no current way to save the settings on your computer.   Please submit your feature request at the following link:

      4) I'll have to look into the cabinet construction on the combos and I'll get back to this question.

      5) the 12AX7 tubes act as a "booster" and "phase inverter" rather than the traditional "tone shaping" preamp tubes.  The tone shaping is all modeling.

    Hello,

The back of the Spider IV cab is MDF.  Please let us know if you need further assistance, or close out the ticket as “answered” if your situation has been resolved.

Re: RE: Spider Valve MkII combo questions

Production is in full swing on a new model and you hear of a vibration problem - - - what would you do?

This is better than Judge Judy!!!!!

        (Just kidding around)

.... closing the back appears to have created a problem (to me at least - but what do I know, I'm a dube)

If that back panel is MDF then it is probably weak and there are probably not enough screws in it (besides not having a center reinforcement).  Add some kind of a center reinforcement and a few more screws around the edges and the problem might be solved (?).  The V30 sounds better closed backed so fix that back panel.

        See, its easy

Has anybody tried the amp "open backed"?  Does it vibrate with no back panel?  I'd bet it doesn't.

        Just my .02$

        Good luck

        M^T

Actually Andy is one of the most helpful board support personnel people I have I ever encountered along with Miller ...

My guess is since you opened this thread with those specific questions and they have been addressed they follow their moderator rules and mark your question as answered.

The question posed later in thread wasn't really a part of the original post and perhaps could be opened as a separate question thread  and then addressed so that it fits within the parameters of the rules they must follow.

It's easier for us as non-moderators to interject hijacking posts into threads but the Line6 guys have rules to follow so they can't be accused of "wrong-doing" so to speak ..not that you would but someone later not as patient or accommodating might which is why they try to always follow their set support rules. Which makes it looks as if they're picking and choosing a battle when in reality they may just be trying to avoid any question or appearance of hi-jacking a thread which could lead to all manner of unintended consequences.
