Locking tuners for Variax 700 electric?

Hi everybody!
I'm very happy with my new Variax 700. Great guitar, beautifully crafted, great set up, right out of the box!
The Gotoh tuners are ok really, but however I do have little tuning problems when using the tremolo a bit more violent.
I wondered if it would make a difference to replace the stock tuners with locking tuners from, for instance, Schaller.
And what would be the best fitting model/brand, in regards to the screwholes and such.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Rohaya
I put Grover Mini Locking Tuners on my Variax 700. All the holes line up exactly where the originals are. I'm very pleased with them. You can achieve pretty much the same result though if you string your guitar in a way that locks the string in the machine head to avoid slippage.
Thanks for your reaction Nick! I'll surely consider them.
Does anybody have good experiences with Schaller (Mini) locking tuners?
Or Planet Waves?
If so, which models?
Thanks again!
Rohaya
I actually tried to obtain the Planet Waves tuners first, but no one here in the UK seemed to have access to the 3 per side type I needed, and I was going to try and purchase two in-line sets - one left handed and the other, right handed and make up two sets - no-one seemed to have the left handed sets available and any dealer I asked reckoned they'd been discontinued. I don't know about the Schaller Minis, but I did get a set of Sperzel locking tuners which I still have and didn't fit because the screw holes were in the wrong place. I didn't want to have to fill the holes that would have been left by the original tuners, but the Sperzels do seem like good tuners apart from that, so I'll use them on something else. It was by chance that a dealer in the UK realised what I was talking about when I was looking and with the aid of my description and a shaky mobile phone picture he sent me of some of his stock we arrived at the Grover Locking Mini's which do the job perfectly. This was all about 18 months ago so the situation may have changed and if you don't live in the UK anyway, you might have a better chance of getting exactly what you want.
Thanks again Nick!
No, actually I live in the Netherlands and I didn't really check out the Planet Waves yet. It was just that I read a lot of positive things about them here on the forum.
As a matter of fact, I work part time in a music store, so I can obtain certain parts for a good price (far below the retail price)
I know I can get the Schallers and in general they're obviously good machine heads. I don't know if they'd fit though.
And I don't know yet if I can get the Grovers through the shop.
I'll try and find out.....

I was looking for something else on my (very) untidy desk and just found a set of Planet Waves Auto-Trim Machines here - I'd forgotten I'd bought these :-) The picture on the box looks like they should fit and that the screw holes should line up with where the original holes on the Variax 700 are, but the physical practicalities of this once the seal on the box was broken and the actual machine heads are available to view are that the screw holes don't line up with the originals at all, so although you could fit them and they'd work well, you'd need to either accept the existing screw holes as they are and leave them looking untidy or to fill them and still have some untidiness as well as making new holes for the Planet Waves tuner screws.

Hi Nick,
Thanks again for your reply!
I don't know yet what I'm gonna do. Neither do I really know what the tuning problems causes really. It might be a combination of things, like described by other forum members. In general the system works fine and as long as I don't use the tremolo to extreme, the tuning remains ok.
But as soon as use it in a bit more Van Halen-kinda way, the a, d, g en b strings (in particular) come out sharp.
As I tune the strings and sometimes pull them a bit, I do hear this typical "pling-sounds" as if the strings get stuck in the top nut slots.
I have no idea if this will ever work properly without a Floyd Rose style tremolo system.
How does yours work?
Rohaya
I have three Ibanez RG guitars (550, 370, 1570) and they all have a licenced Floyd Rose trem system on them with a locking nut. There's no way the Variax 700 trem is any match for them. That said my Variax trem was like yours when I first got the guitar. I spent a little bit of time balancing the trem in the back of the guitar by adjusting the springs/claw tension. I got some fine wet and dry abrasive paper, folded it and just ran it up and down the nut slots to ensure they were smooth. I applied a little bit of Vaseline/pencil lead to the slots for lubrication and I exercised the trem by pushing it fully down and pulling it fully up ust to stretch the springs a bit and to ensure they were 'settled' it their most natural positions. I added a very thin piece of foam behind the springs to deaden any spring noise.
I re-strung the guitar with 9's pretty much as soon as I got it and I wound the strings under tension trapping the end of each between the first and second winding as it pokes through the hole in the machine head which locks the string anyway. This immediately made a difference.
I got the Grover locking machine heads after I'd had the guitar about 6 weeks which improved it a bit more - but I have to say that the the work I had already done made the biggest difference.
The Variax trem works OK for me but I don't use it quite like I do my Ibanez's even though it does return to rest at the correct pitch when it's warmed up. I do prefer the locking nut that you get with a Floyd Rose and it does inspire confidence in the tuning. It's not that I think the Variax trem will let me down, but when you are used to a Floyd Rose it is a matter of being totally confident with anything else :-)
If the guitar is mainly ending up slightly sharp when using the trem, you might need to slacken the claw screws in the rear spring cavity just a tiny bit to better balance the floating action of the trem and also smoothing your nut slots a touch will probably help. I can't take credit for this tip, but it has been suggested that the Variax 700's nut is a fair bit wider than it needs to be, and that if you angle the nut slots down towards the headstock or re-shape the nut so that the headstock side is angled back the result is te same in that the string has a narrower area on which to pivot and therefore less area on which to bind.
My main requests in any new Variax would be for an Ibanez Wizard style neck with locking nut, Floyd Rose trem and magnetic pickups. I think GraphTech make piezo saddles that will fit a Floyd Rose, so it's not beyond the bounds of possibility to customise a Variax with a Floyd Rose. In fact earlier this year someone had transplanted a Variax's guts into an Ibanez RG but had left the pickups (or their covers) in place for cosmetic reasons. The guy had put it up for auction on eBay. I have to admit I was tempted :-)

+1 to nick and hes right about the graph techs for floyd rose.
Good info there. I would like to add that the headstock shoudl have been angled back a bit more IMO. With mine, once the slots are filed down properly, sometimes the high E string would come out of the slot when it is picked hard. It's rather annoying sometimes. I might install a new nut to see if I can remedy the problem...
you might want to give one of these a try.
Hi Amx05462,
Does this model fit the Variax 700?
Does it require to drill holes right through the neck, just like a Floyd Rose nut lock?
no there are two small screws is all it comes with shims but if you do your figuring right you shouldnt have to shim it. i put one on my strat. no problems with the tremelo at all. guitar stays right in tune. i think i remember paying 35 bucks at guitar center. worth every cent. it should fit just fine the necks are similar. and a strat neck goes right on the variax
What are shims?
they give you these little pieces of metal to put under the roller bridge if you remove too much wood. there different thicknesses to bring the nut up to proper height. if you do it right you dont have to shim it you just screw it down and your set.
but since its not an easy thing to get it perfect first time they give you those shims to make everything right if you make a mistake. i didnt need them.
just checked theres a bunch of these on ebay for a better price just type in fender roller nut
I have the Planet waves and have been very happy. Along with locking they also auto trim the string. Not sure which model but I am sure some one will chime in.
Actually, you might want to try and make sure that the string slots on the nut are filed down properly, as the string(s) might get caught in them...
