distortion on D string piezo

Hey Guys,

I was doing some recording in the studio the other day and noticed that the D-string on my variax 700 is making a buzzing sound when I record. I triple checked i wasn't getting a fret buzz anywhere. The more I looked into it the more is sounds like a distortion on the piezo.

I've attached a sound file of it. My chain is Variax > VDI > Pod X3 Pro > USB > Logic Studio 9.

I've recorded it completely clean and have included a comparison of the G string too.. the attachment kept failing so its here: http://public.me.com/sb00020

I'm guessing I'm going to need to get it replaced. Does anyone have any experience with similar problems? How long did it take to be repaired etc? I'm in the UK if that makes any difference.

Thanks in advance

Sam

    Hi Sam

The distortion you are hearing from the D string is almost certainly a piezo pickup issue in either that the piezo module is dying or the conection to the module is loose or otherwise damaged.  When removing strings it is necessary to trim off the coiled string end that has been wrapped around the machine head post otherwise this can snag on the fine wires that connect the piezo module to the electronics as you pull the string out of the rear of the guitar.  Nevertheless it seems that it's fairly common for the piezo modules to die across the Variax range.  I haven't experienced this yet on any of my Variaxes, but I have dealt with Line 6 UK Support on the phone regarding knobs for my Spider Valve, and the lady I spoke to was incredibly helpful and put a couple of knobs in the post which I got the next day.   Having seen reports from other people on these forums - specifically about piezo issues, the response has pretty much been the same across the board as far as I can see.  There's two ways to get this resolved: raise a support ticket here and your request will be forwarded to UK Support who will probably contact you by private message through your account here, by phone (as they did with me) or by email.  Replacing the piezo is fairly straightforward I understand so it is possible for you to do it yourself or to get the work done by an authorised repair centre/competent guitar technician - largely depends on your warranty I suppose.

+1 to nick.  the  only thing i might add is  if you have  a tremelo model  its  not going to be an issue withh  the string  catching a  piezo wire  because  your  strings  go up through  the  holes   in the  trem block isolating  them  from the  piezo wires  ...you should  still  cut  the  ends off as  nick said  though  as the  coiled  end  could  also catchh on the  saddle. pulling on it can  also damage  the  piezo  wires.

replacing one  is as simple as  unsoldering  the  old one  and  soldering in he  new one.  . if your  under warrantee  send it in for this  just so you dont  void  your  warrantee. if  not... and your  sure  its  the piezo  you may want to consider a  set of  graph tech  piezo pickups.

another  thing you may want to check before  replacing   it is the  solder joint  at the  connection   under  the  bridge plate .  some times a  bad  solder joint  will do the same  thing. on a  trem model  i hear  the  connection is  on   one  side of the  trem block  and  the  connector  is  stuck on with  double  sided  tape.

usually a  bad  solder joint  is dull finished.  but the  best  way to  test it is  to just resolder it.
