POD Farm vs. GearBox? What's the difference?

I'm just wondering if the Pod Farm plug-in does anything differently than GearBox that would justify having both.
I have the Pod XT live, all 5 model packs, Riffworks, GearBox Plugin, and a Guitar Port Online subscription.
Needless to say, I'm a line 6 junkie. (2 amps, and pod 2.0 as well).
The stand-alone PodFarm I have (email promotion - it seems I don't qualify for the free upgrade that works as a plug-in) doesn't work with the XT live, so all I can tell is that the interface is awesome, and looks easy.
So, does it do anything the GearBox plug-in doesn't?
At $50 bucks, seems cheap enough to try, but will it be redundant?
As always, Thanks in advance
That's an interesting question! Maybe someone from the Line6 sells team could give us some good reasons? :-)

If you own the Gearbox plugin then you automatically get the equivalent POD Farm plugin for free. You can have both installed and use both at the same time. I have used Gearbox Plugin and POD Farm Plugin successfully within the same project in REAPER. The sound of each is a bit different, and of course POD Farm allows you to do dual tones without running two instances of the plugin.

I don't seem to qualify for the free plug-in, I think I got the GearBox plugin w/ one of the model packs a while ago. If you got GearBox as a "package" w/ other add-ons, you only get the stand alone PodFarm, which is totally usesless for the XTLive.
Thanks for the link, I'll check it out.
Hello,
If you purchased the Gearbox plugin you are entitled to a free upgrade. The POD Farm software will allow you two use two amp simulations at the same time, see the product link for more details. See the following links for the upgrade information:

Thanks for jumping in, but no one has really answered my question.
I understand re-amping, I've been doing it with GearBox for a while.
I know the PodFarm plug-in has a much better interface, and seems simpler to use.
Iv'e tried every possible update, refresh, whatever you want to call 'em scenario's, and can't find the plug-in in Cubase. (GearBox is there)
I'm guessing I got gearbox as a bundle, as that is the only way to explain why I can't use the "free upgrade" links.
PodFarm does show up in the Line 6 Monkey with a green circle, and white checkmark, but not in Cubase, and when I plug in my XTlive to my computer, no compatable line 6 gear is detected when I launch PodFarm.
Stand alone podfarm does not recognize the XTlive. The line6 website confirms this, and that Gearbox will remain the stand alone software for the XTlive.
So from what I've read the only difference I can make of it, is that the interface is much better (i can play w/ the interface as a stand-alone, but as mentioned before, it doesn't work w/ XTlive), and you can run two rigs simultaneously.
Both are great features, (esp. the dual setup), but if there's no additional amps, effects, etc., is there a justifiable reason to have podfarm and Gearbox at the same time?

I wouldn't call the interface better, just prettier. IMO the POD Farm interface is way harder to navigate and tweak new patches than Gearbox.
POD Farm won't show up in your DAW by default when installed because Line 6 don't install the .dll file to your vstplugins directory. It is installed somewhere by default that can't be read by your DAW. You either have to point your DAW directly at the dll (possibly sacrificing all your other vst plugins in the process) or manually copy/move the dll to your plugin directory.

Thanks Malhavok, as it turns out, the plugin was in a folder that Cubase didn't know about.
Fixed that in about 30 seconds. Now it works. It's still in a separate folder than all my other vst plugins, which is fine by me, and all other vst plugins still work as well.
I guess now I can answer my own question, in a little while.
Thanks again
well, reamping and not having the feeling of playing with a playskool interface.
well..to answer your question.
As I see it, the only real difference between Gearbox and PF (except the interface, and the dual amp feature), is PF's MUCH better sound.
I was hoping gearbox would do it for me when I got it, but found other plugins to be much better. When PF came, I was relieved cos its much more CPU friendly, and sound far better than the Gearbox VST.
Ok, I've had some time to play with PodFarm, and GearBox Side by side.
Here's my conclusions:
Once PodFarm is properly installed, it shows up in the "inserts" section of Cubase, at the bottom of my list, below GearBox.
Both are available at anytime.
Both GearBox and PodFarm list the same Amps, effects, etc. (i've got all the model packs).
If you are into "i" everything, eg. iTunes, iPod, the new interface is very much like iTunes "coverflow" view.
Navigation in the PodFarm plug-in is no more difficult, or easier to use than GearBox, in my opinion.
I do feel that the PodFarm plug-in interface has some very cool features:
1. It looks way better.
2. Seeing the graphic representation of the Amplifiers, effects, etc. is an added bonus, if for no other reason than to get a better feel as to what you are aiming for. (eg. Drag and drop a "screamer", and a "65 double verb", and play SRV style blues).
Is that a better way to get to your sound than GearBox? it's highly subjective. As mentioned already, the visual presentation is outstanding.
3. Running 'Dual tones" is extremely useful (for me anyway), as you can have two completly different setups running off of one audio track. Granted with GearBox (plugin) you can have your DAW duplicate any track, and re-amp it again, but PodFarm allows you to alter two different tones, on the same track, simultaneously. Very cool. Just the fact that you can run delays/echos independant of one another is reason enough to give it a try (again, for me).
4. I haven't noticed ANY sound quality difference at all.
5. I had a student in today (17 yrs old), kid loved the new interface. Practically spent the whole hour re-amping whatever dry recordings he had made, often playing with effects in ways that make little or no sense, just to see what happens. A definite plus if you teach, and encourage students to go with line6 gear instead of amps. - Parents love me for that - just a kid wearing headphones, plugged into their computer, no noise for anyone else. It was much easier for the kid to browse the PodFarm interface, and I imagine it will be for most beginners.
6. Is it redundant if you already have GearBox (only rating the plugin here, XTlive can't use the stand alone)? Yes, and no. Already having the full GearBox (and all model packs), there are no new items (as far as i could tell). Sound quality seems unchanged. However, is it worth $50 for dual rigs and a new interface? I think so (again highly subjective, but it works for me).
The only real issue i've had with the plugin, is getting it setup. The vst folder wasn't installed to a location Cubase could find. The answer was provided by MALHAVOK, and it's already in this thread. And it literally did take about 30 seconds to correct the problem.
Hope that clears up any questions.
I'd like to add: Gearbox has a "Hum remover" tool. This tool is missing in Podfarm. But as long as I've never used it, Im not sure how useful it is. My choice is Podfarm just because of the better interface (if I have to stare at something for that much time, may it look nice at least). Nice thread, hope the Line 6 people give some use to this info.
