Substitute for Line 6 EX1 Expression Pedal

Can anyone recommend a substitute for Line 6 EX 1 Expression Pedal for the POD XT Live !?
I read the reviews for the Line 6 pedal and they are really poor. So I thought may as well go in for a different brand of external expression pedal to attach to my Line 6 POD XT Live !
Got a link for those reviews please?
I have a freind who has one...gigs w/ it..loves it...no problems....
Thanks
OM
I think The Line 6 FBV Express Footswitch Pedal should work fine with the POD XT Live ?
No! There is no FBV jack on the XT Live!
A Popular Sub would be the Roland EV5
Thanks , I'll try it ...
The Roland EV5 is pretty much the exact same pedal as the Line6 EX1, except for the additional attenuation knob and TRS output (Line6 connection isn't TRS). Casing and most parts are the same, including the plastic piece that rotates the pot. I think the Roland doesn't have a metal base like the Line6 does though. You're odds of getting a dud would seem to be the same either way.
I just picked up an EX1 at GC. I used it for a few minutes standing up to make sure that it wasn't DOA. We'll see how long it lasts.
Line6, please give us a solid, metal expression pedal for a decent price. When it comes to playing out and being on the road, plastic don't cut it.
Hello,
Please see the following link for more information on the EX1:

The Mission EP-1 and EP1-R pedals are designed to provide a high quality alternative to the EX-1 and work with Line 6 Pod XT Live. http://www.mission-engineering.com.
Below is from here:

and here:
http://www.mission-engineering.com/Mission-Engineering/FAQ.html
"The EP-1 is an expression pedal only with a similar function to a traditional expression pedal. The EP-1 is a single channel expression pedal with no switch but features the same high quality sealed potentiometer and all metal construction of the other Mission Pedals. The EP-1 is also available with the R option mini toggle polarity reversal switch."
"Q: What type of potentiometer is used in the pedals?
A: The Mission Expression Pedals use a 20k Ohm custom taper potentiometer which works well with most of the devices we have tried so far. Expression pedal inputs typically look for somewhere in the range of 10k Ohm to 50k Ohm. The taper of the pot is similar to that found in analog wah pedals which is one of the reasons the Mission pedals are known to provide similar feel to a ‘real’ wah. This taper also works well for other effects, and for volume swells etc. The VM-1 volume pedal uses a 470k Ohm potentiometer. All potentiometers in Mission pedals are maintenance free, sealed units rated at 1,000,000 operations."
So I am questioning if the Mission Pedal as it is, will work with Line 6 Devices? Or does Mission do custom Mods?
The Line 6 Pedal as well as the EV5 has a10K ohm mono linear taper pot!

Q: What are the specs for the Line 6 EX-1 Expression Pedal?
A: The Line6 expression pedal is a passive 10K ohm mono linear taper pot, using a standard 1/4 inch mono instrument cable.
This is the Schematic for the EV5 (I have it)
The short answer is that the Mission EP1-R works great with Line 6 devices. It has been tested in house with the PodXT Live and the M13, and functions fine. Here's the long answer ;-)
The Mission EP-1 and EP1-R are wired similar to the Roland EV-5 shown below except there is no VR2 and VR1 is 20k as opposed to 10k. The -R model adds a polarity switch for compatibility with some non Line 6 devices. The posted values for expression pedal inputs are normally nominal and will support a range of values. The exact ranges depends on the filtering applied to the expression pedal input. In the case of Line 6 devices, both 10kOhm and 20kOhm potentiometers work just fine. The Line 6 EX-1 has no VR2, like the Mission, and is wired slightly differently with tip and ring being bridged so that the pot behaves as a series resistor rather than voltage divider. The Line 6 products generally work fine with both voltage divider pedals such as The Roland and Mission, and series resistor pedals such as the Line 6 EX-1. Voltage divider is traditionally considered a better way to wire a potentiometer for this type of application but it requires a stereo (TRS) cable whereas the EX-1 will work with a mono cable. Mission can do custom mods where required and is planning on offering a specific Line 6 model that is wired the same as an EX-1 for compatibility sake although performance should be the same.
Are you with Mission? ![]()
Yep. I am the Chief Engineer at Mission Engineering. I try watch the various user forums and help out with technical questions where I can. James.
Pleased to meet you! ![]()
Those look like fine pedals! How long has the Company been operating?
Pleased to meet you too. We are fairly new. We started making custom pedals for the Fractal Audio Axe-Fx at the beginning of 2009 and it has proved quite successful. Now expanding to support other processors and add some new products. Happy to answer any expression pedal related questions on just about anything. I can be reached at james@mission-engineering.com.
Hi, I just saw your thread and you seem to be well informed!.
I have a EX-1 pedal (I use with L6 Podxt Live) and I'm looking to replace the pot 'cos its getting crackly.
I phoned their service department today and no-one seems to know what the pot value is let alone whether it is a LOG or LIN type!.
Although you say the pot is 20k I took the back off the pedal a while ago and I thought the pot was marked 820k - perhaps I'd better put a meter across it to check impedance, although it could be my eyesight!
I would like to ask what you would suggest I do . Can I just go to a local Maplins & buy a cheapie or can you recommend a quality replacement. If so what value and more importantly should it be LOG or LINEAR.
Cheers.
Peter
Hello!
The Line6 expression pedal is a passive 10K ohm mono linear taper pot!
I don´t ever remember saying it was a 20K Ohm Pot? But I have been wrong before, usually from senility! ![]()

AWESOME!!! Just checked out Mission-Engineering and am super impressed. It's exactly what I've been waiting for, for my POD XT Live!! Thanks so much for the post!!
Mission Engineering EP1-L6. NOt a plastic toy.
I haven't used the EX-1, is the fact that it's plastic really an issue? Like does the plastic housing crumble when you use it? Or is just the issue that it's plastic therefore it must be a toy? Plastic is used in a lot different applications these days including products that need to stand up to a serious beating. I'm thinking hockey helmets and things along those lines, I sure expect them not to shatter when I get hit with a slapshot, and I sure am glad I don't have to skate around with the wieght of metal. I'm a cop up here in Canada and we just switched over from the Beretta to the Glock for our firearm and a good portion of the gun is plastic, I expect it to work and perform without compromise. There could be a very real beef with the EX-1, like I said I haven't used it and not all plastics are created equal. If there are lots of reports of the pedal breaking under foot then I won't buy one but I won't shun it just because it's made of plastic.
The ex1 is crap, it works ok until you step on it, who needs a PEDAL that you can't STEP on. not to mention that they put the the cheapest pot they could get from china. I have gone through 2 in the last 12 minutes. I am thinking about getting the mission pedal for 100 bucks, but kinda leaning toward the 25k earnie ball for 70 I could save 30 bucks and use the money to buy a sack.
Stay in the mix and in the know.
