How do I record using using the Toneport ux1?

I'm currently recording by using the Toneport's headphone out to my computer's mic/line in, using a 1/4" adapter for a 1/8" cable. Everyone I've spoken to says I shouldn't have to do that, and having the usb cable connect should be sufficient. I'm using the latest drivers, and use XP Pro. I've tried changing the audio preferences to Toneport, ASIO drivers, auto-detect.
So, is the only way to input your guitar to record on a computer is by using the Port's headphone out to your computer's line-in? I get a lot of signal noise. On very rare occasions, everything is fine. But I would think I should be able to record via the usb connection only.
Thanks in advance.
Which DAW (Digital Audio Workstation)/recording software are you using?
Hi,
I'm using Audacity even though I have Ableton & Traktion. Right now, I see no point in learning more advanced programs until I can get more than crap into my computer.
So, you know if I have the Toneport connected properly?
btw, when I do record, I do select Toneport, and every other possible combination in the preferences. Thanks.
Hi,
Connect your Toneport to your computer via USB and launch Gearbox 3.70. Set the Source Select in Gearbox to be "Instrument."
In Audacity, go to Edit/Preferecnes/Audio and set your recording and playback device to be the TonePort.
Press record in Audacity and you should be good to go.

Thanks, Miller,
But the volume is so low, I can barely hear myself through headphones connected to the TonePort; yes, I have the output knob turned all the way up. That's why I thought there was a weird connection problem, and connected the headphone out to mic in to really be able to hear anything. I don't want to hit the "correct answer" buttonyet for tear this thread will be closed. I have the volume, recording knobs turned all the way up in Gearbox also. All drivers, etc are up to date through LineMonkey. Thank you very much. The volume problem is the same whether I use Gearbox or Audacity. Checked EVERYWHERE concerning volume/level and I can't seem to get the sound up to what would be .5 on a volume knob.
silimtao,
First, please fill out a support profile so that we have a better understanding of your system:

Please disconnect any other USB device you may have connected to the computer (except for a mouse and keyboard) while troubleshooting this issue. Also, make sure to disconnect any USB hubs and try the UX1 on all of the USB ports on your computer.
You may also want to try different headphones or speakers to connect the UX1's outputs. If you continue to have issues, you want to try on another computer to isolate the issue.

Hello Hugo,
I filled out my computer's, profile. I will try again on another computer (my 4th one). Only usb device besides the Toneport, is my mouse, no hub, did try all the usb ports- as I have already on 3 other computers. I don't know why the signal is so weak, I've tried every possible setting in Gearbox, system control panel for volume, the Toneport's output gain is all the way up, volume/output to hardware in Gearbox all the way up. When I load a backing track in mp3 format, the sound is fine. My guitar just isn't being picked up very well- sometimes, not at all. Only on the very rarest occasions, have I been to hear the guitar well. Most of the time, again, it's barely audible but the line noise (hum/static sound) is louder than the guitar. Thanks.
Tried again on a Dell Optiplex, 2 Ghz cpu, XP Pro SP3, 1 gig ram. Use lcd monitor, not crt. Used settings as suggested by Miller; made sure TonePort was the preferred device for in/output in sound preferences, Audacity, GearBox, and different variations in system sound controls. Tried different headphones, sound still very, very low- barely audible. Was able to get pretty good volume through speakers, but a lot of static/line noise. Tried on another computer, 3 Ghz Intel cpu, 1 gig ram, used all above settings- have tried it on a total of 4 different computers. The only way I'm able to get decent sound is to link the Port's headphone out to a pc in, but then there's ALOT of line noise. Thanks much.
Hi,
I know you originally did not want to do this but have you tried another recording application? Audacity is super limited so you may want to check your setup inside Ableton.

Hi again,
I'm embarrassed to say I've lost the Ableton software, but did get an email about a free upgrade. I have Traktion that came with my Stealthplug (have no issues with the Plug, but prefer the Port). I'll try with Traktion (which I'm a real noob at).
Still, I don't understand why the volume is so low. I see the vu meters jumping all over the place in Gearbox. I've double, triple checked everything, and that includes 2 clean reinstalls of the operating system on 2 computers. The usb connection seems to be good judging from the vu meters jumping all over the place. Maybe I'll try a clean resinstallation of Gearbox, Monkey, etc. Thanks much.
Hi there
Im really new at this kind of forums, im using the ux2 and have the same problem, i use cubase and volume is really low.
I was used to this behaviour but i realiced that when i was recording after some hours the volume suddenly raised
i have no idea whats going on but i think its the same problem as yours.
I looked some information about this and the only entry i have found is yours, please if you have the final solution to this please write something about it.
thank you
Sorry, Misantropo,
I have no real answers for you. I've deliberately not marked this thread as answered just to keep it open.
As far as low volumes, maybe if you turn up the output gain? This has become all guess work for me. Also, check the level/gain settings in your recording software. I don't know if it's because we're using the lower end of the Line 6 product line, as I know people using different types of Pods with no problem. Problem for me, when turning up the gain, I get incredible line noise, and I try to stay away from other electronics and other stuff. I'm chalking up the the us-1 as a POS (sorry Line 6). I've done everything and then some, but no joy here. ![]()
| You very well might be a bad UX1 device after having gone through different host computer setups. This assumes that you had installed GearBox 3.70 and it's associated USB drivers for the UX1. You shouldn't be getting static/line noise that overbears the input signal. Usually, I've found that the modelled signal at the virtual output of GearBox is not as hot as you'd think, but if you have the amp channel output up high, the signal being sent into a host DAW should be healthy. Sorry, I've never used Audacity. I use Reaper and Live primarily and the only time I've seen a weak input signal from a TonePort USB device is when there is something problematic in the USB device, before the signal is passed to the USB port into the host computer. Our TonePort replacement warranty period is 90 days from the date of purchase on the retailer's receipt of sale. If you still have your receipt and are within that time frame, contact us at 818-575-3600 (8AM-5PM Pacific Standard Time, Monday through Fridays) and select the Service Department queue. |
Look at the date of my original post, you'll see I'm well beyond the 90 day period. Guess I'm stuck with this POS. I'll never buy Line 6 junk again.
