Variax 600 - 5th (A) string is 'fuzzy'/distorted

I love my Variax 600 sunburst electric. Recently it has started being a problem though. The 5th string (A string) is distorted. It sounds like it's being played through a SuperFuzz box. All the other strings are OK. For a while I could tap the piezo with my pick and it would return to normal until I stopped palying for the day. But now it's constant and making the guitar unplayable. I'm thinking I need to replace the piezo on that string but wanted to consult this group first. If I remember my electronics trouble shooting this could also be a symptom of a capacitor in an audio circuit going bad.

Any techies out there with an opinion on this?

    Hi,

I'm having the same problem with my variax 700 sunburst tremolo.

Did you find the solution ?

If tapping on the pickup fixed it at all, then I would suspect the pickup isn't getting a good enough seat in the saddle. Unfortunately, the fix would be somewhat technical. You might have enough slack to remove the pickup just to check out what the saddle seat looks like without the pickup in it, but I doubt it. It will probably need to be unsoldered from the connector to be able to see under it. If you don't have a problem doing that, you could give it a go. If not, it's definitely a job for a technician. I believe the seating is somewhat critical because that's the ground connection for the pickup (it only has one wire...the "hot" one) and it needs to be solid. Normally, the string pressure on it would make a good connection, but if there's something keeping it from getting a good connection, it can wreak havoc.
