Question about my new JTV-69 setup.

I am awaiting the shipment of my JTV-69 hopefully in September. My question is what gauge strings are on the Korean JTV-69? I play 10's and normally guitars are sold with 9's installed. I was wondering if I will need to drastically adjust the guitar to handle the heaver gauge strings?

The basic mechanics and setup of the Variax (Tyler or original) are those of an electric guitar. So, assuming it does ship with 9s (which it may or may not), you would just set it up exactly like any other electric guitar.

Hi - I do happen to know the answer to this question...

All Korean JTV's will be shipped out with Elixir .009 gauge strings and I pretty certain that this will also be the case with the US versions.

The second part of your question...I would answer very much like Mayfield already did.  My only other bit to add would be after you supplied this info about yourself...Your technical knowledge regarding various models of guitars, their necks & the properties the wood(s) used plus if it is a more conventional single truss rod, or perhaps have you dealt with any that use two truss rods, and your expereince in do your own set-ups?

No matter what your answers to the above, setting up any of the JTV guitar models should not be complicated or difficult to get the results you desire in the string gauge you prefer to use.

I hope this helps and if you wish to discuss this further, please feel free to PM me.

Thank you for your kind response. I really was wondering more about the effect of the heavier strings on the neck and tremolo. I don't have a good guitar tech where I live, so I considering having Sweetwater re-string the guitar and adjust the neck and bridge. Hopefully there wouldn't have to be any agumentation to the nut.

If you can get the store techs to set up the guitar properly to your playing style - that is terrific.  If you wish to do it yourself, please feel free to PM me and I'd be happy to talk you through over the phone if needed.

The nut being used on the US model I know 100% is a Graphtech nut which is very capable of handling the heavier strings on a set of .010 as well as .009.  I wish I knew 100% if the same brand/type of nut is being put onto the Korean versions.  The specs of this have been asked and answered a few times by Rich and others.

If it is even remotely like the plastic nut that came on the Variax electric model 700 I have, I can say that you will probably not have any problems moving up to .010s.  However, I HIGHLY recommend you check out the Planet Waves AUTO TRIM Locking tuners.  These are fantastic and solved all of my string problems with the tremolo that is on the 700.  And if you find that you have tuning problems with the tremolo - I know these tuners (about $60.00 retail) will solve all tuing problems plus give you much better string resonance as well.  Might be one of the reasons I've never had those plinks or clangs on either of my two 700's?

        Take care,

        Neal

Both the USA and Korean guitars come strung up with D'Addario 10's.
