Have you tried a different USB port? Someone mentioned in a thread here the other day that sometimes the front USB ports go through an internal Hub which can cause problems. It's worth a shot at least.

There seems to be some kind of communication issue between your POD and the computer. It may be a hardware conflict, a faulty cable, a faulty USB port on the computer etc... or it may be a software issue on your computer in that another application or driver for another piece of equipment may be blocking your attempts to install the HD500 - or even your anti-malware software might be causing the problem. I can't really guess at what software or drivers might be blocking your attempts to install the Hd400 drivers as they will be unique to your system in the way that it is configured.
Disconnect all other USB devices like printer, Web cam etc...
Download and install the driver for the HD400 directly from the Downloads section above for Windows Vista which should update the settings. Connect the HD400 using a NEW or different USB cable (you may have a faulty one - rare but possible).
Download and install/re-install Line 6 Monkey 1.34 and hopefully it should detect your HD400.
Just to double check that the issue isn't with your HD400 itself, do you have access to another computer you could use to try the HD400 installation on? If so that might be a way forward if we can discount the HD400 as being the problem and know for certain that it is a problem related to your computer.

Thanks for the suggestions. Here's what I have tried:
- three different USB cables against all six USB ports on my PC
- tried installing the drivers on a different PC and connecting the HD400 to that
- tried including drivers for HD300/400/500 + PODxt in the install process
I have found no change in the behavior of the system under any of these circumstances. It appears to me that the device is not properly informing the PC of its identity, which would explain why Windows does not associate the installed drivers with the device. The message I get on the Found New Hardware dialog is always the same: "Windows needs to install driver software for your Unknown". FWIW, I already own a PODxt Live and a UX1 that I connect to this PC via various USB ports, and have never had a problem.
There has to be some kind of firmware in the device itself that registers its identity to the PC, right? Is it possible that this firmware is corrupted in some way?

I have to admit defeat on this one. It may be that your unit has a hardware fault and that you need to get the unit repaired or ideally replaced by your supplier. it certainly doesn't seem to be behaving itself as it should. Have a chat with your supplier and see what they suggest. It would be useful perhaps if they atre local to you and have another HD400 in stock if you could take your laptop to the store and try it with a different HD400 which should confirm one way or another whether or not the problem is with your HD400 or something else.
Sorry that's the best I can suggest in terms of you troubleshooting the issue yourself

Problem solved! I performed a factory reset, and following that the device was recognized as "Line 6 POD HD400" instead of "Unknown". Thanks to all for your suggestions.

Easy when you know how.
I have the HD500 and this currently doesn't have a 'standard' factory reset option - you have to re-flash.... Sorry - should have thought of the factory reset option for the HD400 for you.
Glad you worked it out
