OK I have seen this more than once when updating the flash firmware from certain versions to certain new versions. I don't know what version firmware came installed on your HD500.
It does seem perhaps to be related to a particular preset and what it might be is that the preset in the unit may no longer be compatible with the new update or the existing preset may have become corrupted for some reason - just guessing
Unplug all other USB devices from your computer and make sure you are not using any kind of USB hub, so if it's a desktop avoid the potential of a front-of-case internal hub by plugging into a rear USB 2.0 port
There are two ways which might help you resolve this particular issue and you might as well try them both at once:
1 Boot your HD500 into safe mode/test mode by holding down the right button on the 4 way controller as you power on
2 When the update process gets to the part where it asks if you want to keep your presets, select the option not to do this
If I'm right, the update should proceed properly and completely

Hi, thanks for the quick answer!
...and...YES YOU'RE RIGHT!!!
After done the procedure for three times, (with bad words...) the POD accepded the Flash update and come back to life!
Monkey says it had the correct 1.10 flash memory version.
The PC EDIT works, and I just saved all new preset.
I've not tested it deeply, but I am so happy and cheerful that I want to tell right now you the breaking new and say a big THANK YOU!!!!
In italian too: GRAZIE MILLE!!!!!!
All the best.
